The population was 42 from the 1930s to the 1960s, then went down to 30 from the 1970s through 2000. [2]
On September 8, 2010, an EF0 tornado struck Whitson, snapping and twisting a few trees. It was reportedly a part of Tropical Storm Hermine. [3]
