I expect you should start seeing them within the week. Watch this discussion page and the Nav Bar, as soon as they notify me of the existence of their userpages, it will be in both places. You dont have to wait for them to come to you if you want to get started. Next week they have to give presentations on aspects of Wikipedia to help oriente themselves and the rest of the class.

I don't see how separate usernames could create "chaos", just have each mentor create a subpage on their user page for each group to watch, and that way, it all stays organized. It might not be disruptive, but I know there's something against compromised accounts.

Who do I ask for some kind of special exception? I am too far along into this project to have this kind of problem. I want them to have an account so that they learn to integrate into the Wikipedian community but I dont want mentors writing the same thing on 4 different userpages. or getting the same question from 4 people. I also dont want to be monitoring about 60 individual pages and trying piece together how the group interacted with their mentors and each other. I discussed this with Richard some time back on this or the school project page.

That's where my suggestion comes in. Lot's of
administrator coaches create a "coaching" subpage. Each mentor could have a subpage, and their group could discuss things on that page. You would only have to watch about 5, depending on your number of students.

I have over 40 people who have volunteered to mentor, enough to have multiple mentors for each group. Not having their own page IMHO takes away from the Wikipedia experience. If I cant get around the ban against group pages, maybe I can have subpages on my username for each group. But really, it would be better to have some kind of exception to policy in this case.

Also, of course, you could create a "Class" page of your own in userspace, like
User:Thelmadatter/Students, which might have the various individual student user pages linked to it, maybe even indicating the individual student's specialty. That might be a way of "centralizing" the students. You might also ask each student who has created their own userpage to make their individual user talk pages redirects to a "group" talk page. I think wikipedia policy would permit an individual user to turn their individual talk page into a redirect to another, multi-user, talk page. Also, I've contacted the presumptive founder of the
Wikipedia:WikiProject Classroom coordination, and hope that that party might be contacting you as the opportunity permits. With any luck, she'll have a better idea of what is possible here.

It is my understanding of the
GFDL that having multiple people editing under one username violates the GFDL as each author's contributions should be attributed to that individual. Other's with a better understanding of the GFDL may want to step in this discussion. Granted, I have not investigated what exactly you are doing here, but if you are wanting each team to have one ID and then edit the same userpage, you could have all students create an ID and then assign a team leader and have all members of that team edit on that person's talk page.↔

I think that giving each user their own userspace, and then have a separate mentoring page (in your userspace, or each mentor's userspace) for each group is a great idea. Giving each student their own userspace certainly adds to the wikipedia experience, it doesn't take away from it.

Unfortunately, we cannot make an exception since allowing multiple editors to edit under one acct violates
WP:U and
WP:GFDL, just to name a few. However, we can try to come up with a solution that allows your students to continue with their project on Wikipedia. Again, you can have all your students create individual accounts and then assign them to edit only one user's talk page. Or you can create subpages on your username (such as
User:Thelmadatter/Group1,
User:Thelmadatter/Group2, etc) and have them edit that. Each individuals edits must be attributable to that user's ID, and that is impossible when multiple editors use one ID.↔

Here is a possible solution. I created a subpage of the Project Page
Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Appleteam and the students can put there usernames (when they all have them) on this page. They communicate with mentors and others about their school-related projects here and here only. On their personal pages, they can do whatever they like, but I will not be checking them. Is that acceptable?

I received a request to take a look at this situation and I have to agree: because of GDFL copyright licensing issues it's beyond the power of individual editors - or even administrators - to approve role accounts. You might try e-mailing the Wikimedia Foundation, but really it's better to have the individual students register individual accounts. You could still keep things fairly straightforward by assigning sequential usernames, such as...

Either way... in the end, it is the students' responsibility to make sure that they have the help they they need; however, if mentors approach them, Im sure it will be appreciated. I have told them to work on their group pages, so that in case any of you guys want to take the initiative, you have some idea who you are contacting. I thought about assigning mentors, but decided against it because I felt it would take away some from the "wikipedia experience" and I didnt want students coming to me to fix their problems if a mentor disappeared.

I have described Wikipedia as a "culture" and a "society". Like becoming part of any society, one must experience the disorientation of learning how to function within that culture. That includes culture clash (where values collide, as they did with the discussion about group user pages) and culture shock (the feeling of disorientation as you are trying to learn a complete set of rules). As their teacher, I am required to guide them through the experience but I cannot and should not explain everything to them. I doubt too many Wikipedians learned how to contribute to this by having someone over their shoulder, explaining every question they had to them in person. One of the priniple goals of this course is to show how communicating effectively in a foreign language requires more than knowing grammar, vocabulary etc. It requires learning how, when, where, what and whom to communicate ... all of these are based on the society/culture at hand. While most people never get to travel to a country where the target language is spoken, the Internet provides opportunties to integrate oneself in outside communities. And Wikipedia is a community. Hope this clarifies.

Yes it would. Unfortunately, many students do not jump the gun as fast as we would like. Many students wait until deadlines are looming before doing what they need. I have set some intermediate deadlines and warned them that one way to show repect to you guys is to start responding. And lets face it... Wikipedia is a bit daunting!

As we read in the comments, we like the idea of using Mexican municipalities as a topic . For example we would talk about some place we have visited. As Cancùn, Acapulco or maybe Toluca.But we don´t want to only put information like location, weather, etc. But also to put our experiences in that place, and why people from all over the world should visit that place.
As we read in the discussion we don`t think that infoboxes should be necessary. Maybe because it would take a lot of time doing them. And we may not be focusing on what we are writting.
It is important to read these comments because they may help us in doing our project.

In the discussion page we saw a lot of comments about our wikipedia project. Doubts about the problem we had creating a group page. Mentors interested in our wikiproject and interested in being our mentors. We also saw some help requests related with the wikiproject. In the discussion page it is explained that because of wikipedia policy we could not make our group pages as planned at the beginning of the period. In your page there is a navigator bar. Under the link of “project pages” are given the instructions for the wikiproject. There are also links for bibliography we will need and for our group pages.
According to your user page, we found this project to be a new experience in our lives. Although some of us have already experience new cultures, it is the first time we experience with a big audience. By reading your discussion page, it does seem kind of hard to start getting use to this environment. We know it will take us some time to understand all the policies and functions of the server, but the mentors will help us out with those problems (at least we hope so). It is still kind of confusing, but we will manage it somehow.

We found the whole wikipedia project interesting because it’s not a common assignment and we had never been part of something like this. We also find it kinda difficult because we’re not used to contributing in such a large encyclopedia as wikipedia is. The fact that there are many mentors to help us in whatever we need is cool and helpful. It makes us feel safe and somehow also more encouraged to do a good job. Event though user boxes are fun, they use way too much space. We read the article about Mexican music and we laughed out loud. We hope we don't offend anyone with this but it's just that most of the information is inaccurate. At some point we'd like to contribute with some improvements for it. The discussion board is definitely a source designed to provide us help. We can find there instructions to make our Wikipedia article the best as possible. Some of them are related with info-boxes, whose purpose is to support ideas and explain them by giving examples. Info-boxes are not necessarily indispensable for assignments, but certainly, they had become a way for “synthesizing” information.
Mentors are one of the most important subjects in the reading. These people offer their help to students and consequently, they will answer questions, clarify doubts and will try to be in touch whenever someone needs it. They had also reorganized pages to avoid any confusion and divided them in some useful categories.
It was funny when they began to talk about the teacher’s name. Maybe mentors were trying to figure out where her last name came from. We laugh when they guessed about its origin.
Sharing an account became such a problem, but finally a great solution was given. We think this is the best way to be assist with any hesitation.
In conclusion, the group can truly affirm that this project will be a marvelous improvement for our second language. —Preceding

I think this is a project that won't just help us with comunication in English. Personally, since I am not from México, I feel it will help me adjust to this new environment, this culture I'm trying to be a part of. The teacher is right when she says speaking a foreing language is not just learning grammar and vocabulary, it is also learning how to adapt to the different situations that we will experience. I find it impressive how eassy is comunicating between Wikipedians, and how they help each other in order to become a trustable community. We also appreciate a lot the fact that people who doesn't even know us, it is going to help us with our projects this semester. In the discussion page, there are a lot of topics. In this page you can make all the comments you want about the articles, the way they are written, if they are missing something or stuff like that.
Finally i think this project was a great idea, it becomes a big part of our prepartion for all the things we will be doing in a near future. —Preceding

one on the main page today. For bonus points on their projects, I'd like to see your students see if they can get an article to Featured Article status. Groups and Mentors table
I have created a table of Groups, Students and Mentors at
Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Groups. I think this table would be useful to help determine who is in each group and who is mentoring that group. I got the table started and started filling it out. Then I thought that this would be a useful exercise for each group. All they need to do is put their names in the appropriate box in the Students column and the name of their mentor in the Mentor column. If they can do this with wikilinks, that's even better.
If you don't want to use up limited instruction and assignment time having the students fill it out, I can finish the table myself. It just takes time and I figured the students would benefit more from the experience than I would.
I see the table appears in the
Wikipedia:School and university projects/ITESM Campus Toluca/Students. I think that is a better place for it instead of creating yet another new project page. Plus that page is already in the Nav Bar. I will instruct students to fill in as best they can. They are doing presentations about Wikipedia this week and we seem to have about 15 min each day to work on stuff. Where's the email you promised me??? :P

If I can butt in here... we have to be mindful that this is not a course in Wikipedia but rather a course in English that happens to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool. If there are students that want to learn how to use templates, that's great but otherwise the focus should be on writing articles and interacting with mentors rather than on technical details of how to use Wikipedia.
I have to agree. If you get specific requests to do so, fine but creation of templates or images or infoboxes does not count towards their grade for contributing to Wikipedia. Any conversing you due this month with them about creating such counts towards their "networking" assignment... as long as it is all done in English, of course.

I noted a lot of your students have expressed a wide variety of interests: food, beer, etc. Although it is kind of out of date (I'm working on updating it right now), they might find it useful to refer to the

Be sure to let your students know that moving a page is easy, maybe too easy. Moving a page can be contentious. If the name change is purely about spelling, it's less of a problem although sometimes even the spelling of a name can be the subject of heated and, unfortunatedly, even vitriolic debate.
Anyone can move a page but anyone else can move it back and sometimes this leads to "move wars". Unless a move is clearly uncontroversial, it's a good idea to ask on the Talk Page first and then wait a few days to see if anyone objects. This is a rule of thumb that I often violate but I also get slapped around every so often when I get too bold. Help your students avoid this unpleasantness. Advise them to use this feature carefully. --

I've seen some of your articles (ex:machaca) I've been thinking that for my project I can improve some of your articles about our culture. Also I think your user page is very well distributed for us the students, so we found very easy to read the articles and in our team we found that the response of the mentors is incredible. We never thought we had such an amazing response to this project. We are currently reading the article a mentor gave us to iniciate our wikipedia project. Yes...wikilinks would be much better ... gosh darn it, I just never get that "roundtuit" thingy I need to fix that little problem. No editing yet, That will start the first week of October. This "partial" was just first creating a presence in Wikipedia and brainstorming ideas for the contributions of the third partial (~October) and 4th partial/final project (first 2 weeks in November. I know this is slower most Wikipedians operate but students are doing other projects and assignments as well and this allows for time for mixups and problems--- which we have had!

There is no strict protocol for translating English-language to Spanish, and it certainly is not limited to featured articles. Sadly, articles from Word may not be uploaded to Wikipedia. *About e-mail and interviews as a formal reference: In Mexico it’s considered that an e-mail or interview is a reliable source when it comes from a recognized and well know people or group of people. Even APA considers e-mail as a source. This is the way to cite them: Author > URL > Subject > Date > Name of the server used (hotmail, yahoo…)
*Infoboxes: they are a good tool if you want to have your pages organized. However as Richard tells us, don’t waste too much time with them because the project is for upgrading English skills not editing Wikipedia.
*Translating from English to Spanish (articles): I think that translating an article from English to Spanish is not a big problem. However we are humans and of course we make mistakes. We should check spelling and redaction when finishing translating so that your article will not be a “run-on”.
*Titles and signature: About the discussion page we would like to invite users to use Titles because sometimes it was a little difficult to follow the conversation.

While it is true that emails can be accepted as valid sources in academic papers, Wikipedia does not accept them due to the inability to verify. The only way anyone at Wikipedia has for verification realitically is to be able to go to the source itself to check. While a regular publisher may have the resources to go and contact the knowledgable person who wrote the email, WP does not. That is the principle reason we cannot use emails as sources.

We think that this Project is very ambitious because of its goals. First of all the project not only help us learning more about English, it also help us interacting with people. The way we can interact with people is not only by finding help in mentors and talking to them, the interaction is done since uploading an article or a comment. On the other hand, by uploading comments or updating our group pages, we got corrections or even disappointments. As we have read, we will have to upload a stub in the third partial in order to complete our assignments and we find it very interesting. The reason we think that is the fact that the stub wont be helpful only for us, but every Wikipedian on the web.

Sorry teacher I hadn't done this before...
well during my "surf" here I could notice there were some probles during Account Creation, due to the fact that J told you it was prohibited to share an account and a password with other people. I found it good, because in that case you can "protect" yourself for being used as "bad example" in wikipedia.
I hadn't thought about the fact that it is not really easy to organize all these pages, but reading what the mentors did to your page and how they helped me to reorganize mine, i finally came to the idea it is a hard work.
I know not only surfing here is a "contribution" to wikipedia, I've come to the conclusion that using wikipedia can be accurate if we all help to do so.

First You have to create an archive subpage of your talk page. Then all you have to do is move them there in chronological order depending on when the discussion was first started. See
Help:Archiving a talk page for more. I actually have a bot archive my talk page for me. You might not want that because some of these discussions might be relevant later.

I reverted Lmiguelrd's edit to the

Richard. You will need to upload a different photo to get credit. Try to upload a photo from where you live instead of from vacation. You are more likely to find something that does add to the related article.

It is famous because of it's perfection and also because it has 12 angles. This rock is even the image of the most famous beer in my country (Perú), "Cuzqueña". I took the photograph in my trip to Cuzco.

Very interesting. Galleries are nice but not really very informative. It just makes me want to ask if you couldn't find a place for this picture where you can put some text describing what the Inca Wall is and why this stone is interesting. I'm guessing that it is because the stone mason's carefully carved 12 angles so that this stone could fit into the wall. Is there enough text to write an article on the
Inca Wall? Is this wall known by that name? You could also upload a picture of a bottle of Cuzqueña and use it to support the point about the notability of this stone.

I consider it as touristic because this is the most popular resort in this city and many people just go to Ica to go there. This resort is behind the dunes and people go there to do Sunboard.You can also do tubulars here. Tubulars are a kind of car design specially for the sand.I have photographs of my brother and me doing that sport, but as I apeared with him I do not know if I can upload that. Mentors and anyone else who is interested... please take a look at the group talk pages of my students (on the navigation bar). On their pages I had them put up how they would like to modify a section of either the Toluca or State of Mexico page, depending on the class section they are in. I have them citing using APA format right now, but we will cover Wikipedia style on Monday. From what I have read, the information found is really good, but pointers on grammar, expression etc. would be appreciated. It would be really nice if they could hear it from someone other than me all the time! :D These modifications are practice to get an idea of what to do for their assignments for this month.

There are a couple different ways to do this. I suggest that you follow each sentence that you wish to add a reference to with <ref> and </ref>. Your reference information goes between the <ref> and the </ref>. <ref> comes before your reference information and </ref> comes after.
Then, at the end of the article, add a section called "References". Use ==References== to create the section. Then add this line <references />.
That should do it.
I have fixed the
Pemexgate article for you. Some attention will be needed to improve the English but it looks like a good start. I will try to come back and look at the English when I have more time.
Isn't Wikipedia grand? (I was going to use the word "ain't" but decided to put my English teacher cap on :D )

Another editor has removed your text as being inappropriate to that article. I'm sorry but I agree that it doesn't fit with that article. It does, however, seem to be a useful addition to the
Tabasco article which is where I have placed your text. I have made some corrections to the text.
"is waiting..." is presumbably a direct translation from the Spanish "está esperando" but this is not colloquial. "is waiting for..." is more better English but still not quite colloquial to express what's really going on. The question here is who is planning the project, who is sponsoring/funding it and who will actually supervise the construction of such a project. Is this a national project or a local/regional project? Is Tabasco awaiting a project being planned, funded and managed by an agency of the national government? If so, "awaiting" or "expecting" are reasonable ways to express this. If, however, Tabasco is the main driver behind this project, then "contemplating", "planning" or "developing" are better ways to express this. I used "contemplating". If this is not the right sense ("sentido" en español) of meaning, then please fix it.
In English, "hydraulic" means "having to do with fluids and liquids" and is a very general term. The phrase that we use in English is "hydroelectric power" or just "hydropower". I'm not sure if you would use "explotación" in this context in Spanish, but you would in English.
"Intensity of rain" is probably not what you mean here. "Intensity" suggests that you are discussing how much rain falls in a short period of time (hours, days). For hydropower, what you need is total volume of annual rainfall. Well, I'm not an expert in hydropower but that's my personal guess.
"is up 3200MW" suggests that the exploitation of hydropower has increased 3200MW ("ha augmentado" en español). The text on the website says "asciende a 3200MW" which translates as "has risen to (a level of) 3200MW". This is an important difference.
Acronyms like CONAE should be in all caps. Using upper and lower case as in "Conae" is confusing. Also, the first time you use an acronym in a document, chapter or major section, spell out the acronym. Since this is Wikipedia, use the English translation (National Commission for Energy Conservation).

Two articles on natural disasters need expansion
Hello, I hope that your project is going well. I would like to let you know of two articles that may be of interest. They both need more information added relative to Mexico.

2007 Tabasco flood yesterday. It is currently linked from the Main Page due to the importance of this event, but the article still needs expansion.
Also, the

Well, the semester went pretty well! So well that over a third of my students increased their
TOEFL scores by 20 points or more... very significant! Now comes the good/bad news.... Ive been asked to repeat the course, modified for teachers here at the Tec campus. Oh joy oh joy! Actually, the nice thing is that these are older and (hopefully!) more mature students. They will be working on their contributions to Wikipedia independently, not in groups. Some, however, may be a bit technophobic (despite the fact working at a tech high school/college!). So who wants to mentor again??????

I would like to say that, as an educator, I find your recent comment which states that "it's a bad educator that bans their students from reading Wikipedia"

I was going to write something here but I was stuck in a meeting this morning for 3 hours *groan* I, too, have to disagree with your statement that Wikipedia should be accepted for schoolwork. You even included the caveat that only articles that are well-cited should be used. What teacher is going to want to analyze every Wikipedia article cited to see if it is acceptable for use? Also, many (if not all) elementary, middle or even high school students would not be able to determine if an article overall has good citations or not. Besides, it is generally accepted that terciary sources are not academically acceptable. I teach my students to use encyclopedias, Wikipedia included, only to begin their research when they have no clue about the topic. Also, there is nothing wrong with chaining to the sources that many entries cite like newspaper articles, books etc but use the information from the original... not the encyclopedia. I write you this as one who uses Wikipedia extensively (see my user page and
WP:SUP) for my writing and Advanced EFL classes. Don't throw down the gauntlet to educators... you get the reaction like the one above. However, keep pushing to make Wikipedia better. You are right that students do use it, even if prohibited. Plus, it is proving to be a really excellent way to get students to write and research.

The BBC article is entirely misleading about my remarks. My opinion on the proper use of Wikipedia in the educational environment has not changed one bit. I believe that our anonymous teacher, above, would respond as the audience did: strong applause. The key, of course, is to hear what I actually said, rather than this misreporting. I have asked the BBC to run a correction.
I believe that educators whose entire response to Wikipedia is to tell students not to look at it are in fact bad educators. Good teachers will understand that the right approach is to teach students about the weaknessess - and strengths - of Wikipedia. And to caution them that Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for an academic citation, any more than Britannica is. Thelmadatter, I agree absolutely with your remarks about the use of Wikipedia in the classroom, and based on reading what you have said, I suspect we would have to work really hard in a conversation to find any differences in our opinions at all on these matters. :-) So, I please innocent.--

finding an old page
Need a favor... when my class started working on the
Mexico State page (as it is now called) it was called
México (state) and had only information from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britanica. However, when I got into the page's history I cant get to that version. Looks like there were two pages with two different names that got merged. Does that version no longer exist?

As to what happened, this is probably more than you want to know but...
How would you determine this? When you visit
México (state) and get redirected to
Mexico State, there is a notice of the redirect that says "(Redirected from México (state))". If you click on the wikilink in the above notice, you are brought to the title
México (state). If you now click on the "History" tab, it will tell you that
User:GTBacchus performed the move on October 6.
If you go to
Mexico State and click on "History", you should be able to find the version you want sometime before October 6.
I know the above is a lot of extra detail that you don't necessarily need to know right now but I thought it would be useful if you understood how to noodle this out for yourself. (teaching you to fish rather than giving you the fish).

Im working to develop a kind of "cheat sheet" where the headings, reference list and other coding is already set up. Students could take the cheat sheet and use it to create pages and get started contributing to Wikipedia faster. I noticed that waiting almost 2 months before students really start putting anything up on Wikipedia in Advanced B, despite the fact that "getting integrated and familiar with the community's standards" was part of the course, was really too long. For Advanced A, I wont have any time to get them familiar with all of Wikipedia's policies. I know
Alixb and
Hugo Estrada are interested in developing the pages for all the towns/cities in Mexico. Here's the idea I have (I dont know how to make the codes NOT do what they are supposed to do, so you may have to look at the section below in edit mode to see what I wrote for my students in MS Word)
The coding for an infobox could be added to this sheet but the idea here is to get students contributing as quickly and easily as possible and still keep in guidelines. It could also work to standardize a bit more how these kinds of articles are written. Other cheat sheets could be devised for biographies, movies etc. Whaddya think?
I have moved the actual outline to
Template:Mexican municipality. This template should be used with substitution as in {{subst:Mexican municipality}}. We will have to work on adding an infobox and maybe providing some parameters to the template.
This is the sort of thing that should be discussed with
WP:MEXICO. I think one of the instructors offered to help with infoboxes but we demurred suggesting that the focus should be on writing English not building infoboxes. Now is the time to take him up on his offer.
For an example of how this template would work eventually, look at
Template:SCOTUS-case. Then create a new article in userspace using the following line...
{{subst:SCOTUS-case|Wooley v. Maynard|430|705|1977|held that New Hampshire could not constitutionally require citizens to display the state motto upon their vehicle license plates}}
If you put everything starting with the {{ and }} on a new page and hit "Show preview", you will see that an entire article outline is provided for the SCOTUS case.
Look at
Wooley v. Maynard to see the actual outline that the template generated.

Students gearing up to work with Wikipedia
I dont know if I will have time to contact those on my list of mentors, so Im hoping most of you guys have this page on your watchlist. A course for teachers at my school, based on Wikipedia begins on Monday Jan 28. I will very shortly put a list of projects they will need to do at
Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus and a list of student userpages as soon as possible. These students will not be working in groups.
I would really appreciate mentor help with these students, not only for the authenticity of the Wikipedia experience but I need to confirm some comments that my Advanced B students made last semester. I receive several negative comments and no positive comments about working with mentors. Most of the negative comments were that mentors never answered or gave any real help. Now I dont know if that is accurate or if students were asking mentors to practically write their articles for them. I would like to see what more mature adults have to say about working with more seasoned Wikipedians.
Advanced A will do a 3-day mini-project in Wikipedia, using the town article "cheat sheet" template I developed
Template:Mexican_municipality. These students will be working in groups but considering the brief duration of this mini-project, I will simply have each student create an account and upload a portion of the article the group creates. I dont think it will be practical or necessary to elict help from mentors for these guys. ****
FritzBot and ongoing attempt to document Mexican municipalities
There is a lively discussion about the proposal to have a bot create articles for all of the worlds documented towns and villages, see
Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/FritzpollBot. There are already a LOT of responses on this page and I have only scanned the various comments. This may affect my use of Wikipedia for my English classes as such a bot would create a ton of articles about Mexican towns and villages... whether such have municipal status or not. If such bot does go forward and do this, I would really like to see some kind of consensus about whether to combine town/municipality articles or not. After struggling with the issue and with my students, I really do think that in most cases, especially dealing with central and southern Mexico (which I am more familiar with), combining the two is the most logical choice, as for many, either the town is the only community of any real size (like most cases in Oaxaca) or conversely, the city and the municipality are co-extensive. As for naming convention, naming such combined articles seems to be best done under the town/village's name (most have the same name, at least partially but where the are different, the city name would be more distinctive in most cases... and the bot is going to create a page with the town/village's full name anyway. For towns/municipalities that have the same common name (like Atizapán or Acatlán), disambiguation pages will serve.
Another issue is standardizing infoboxes... I would like to see one for towns with municipal status and towns/villages without such. Ive made a first attempt at such at the
Acambay, Mexico State page, though you will have to see it in edit mode to see all the information I think needs to be in there. I have not created one for non-municipal towns/villages but such should include a line stating which municipality it belongs to.

I have put up (new) infoboxes for all the articles that exist that link from
Municipalities of Mexico State. However, I want both the population figure for the municipality and the town/city to appear in the infobox. The information is in there but does not appear on the article. For example the article for
Acambay. I know I need to do something with the code but I cant figure out what.

If you look at the article in edit mode and scroll down a little, you will see that I have put in two population figures.. one for the municipality (the area the town is govermentally responsible for) and one for the town, itself. I would like both to appear and clearly labeled to show which is which.

Mexican municipalities and towns
Hi. Myself and User:Aille are currently working through Mexican municipalities and their seats and starting them like
Canatlán. See

Yes for some of the states particularly if the municipalities are smaller I think its best to combine them, well initially anyway. Main priority though is to get them up and running so we have an article on every municipality/town. I've done a fair bit of work on Salvador too with infoboxes but the rest of Central America, and well Latin America as a whole from Mexico down to Chile needs a lot of work also. I;ve translated numerous articles from Spanish wikipedia like
Tenerife and expanded
Xalapa from the Enciclopedia but I'm not completely fluent although have a good understanding of it

Municipios
Thanks for the message, and the tips on sources. I take the point about a lot of the EdoMex's municipalities (particularly the conurbated ones) being coextensive with the cabeceras. And even for the bigger ones (Dgo, Chih, Coah...), there's the point about whether it's worthwhile to have two mutually reinforcing stubs: "name is a municipality in..." & "name is a town in the municipality of..." -- it's a major event when you find a muni article that actually has more than one "settlement in it" article (tho' it did happen to me last night down in Campeche). One tries to reassure oneself that what we're doing is articulating a framework from which future articles will hang, but even so... although the gaps are discouraging, the quality of a lot of the existing articles is even more. I was wary of touching the EdoMex, but looking at the template there above, it doesn't look so bad: half done, or thereabouts. Nomenclature is another problem (formal city names with "de Fulano de Tal" that are never used in real life, etc.), but extensive preemptive redirects can take of that. See you around the municipalities, then.

I am not criticising you, I am criticising the article. There is a big difference. As a reviewer or reader I'm uninterested in who contributed to it; the article has been put up for GAC and you should expect constructive criticism. As well as my review comments, I corrected a great many spelling mistakes and grammatical faults and I'm not even half-way through. The article as it stands is most certainly not worthy of GA status, but if you and other editors are willing to correct these problems then it may well qualify.
You don't need to put references on the end of each line, but you do need to make sure you include references that work. Reference 6, does not. I haven't checked all the other references because there are so many issues with the article in general. If I were you, I'd have a look at a few featured articles from the front page and try to integrate the formatting there into this article. For instance, the
Frank Zappa article uses the plain citation tag throughout. The MoS says not to mix the two templates, as the results are formatted inconsistently.
I'm sorry if you don't like articles to which you have contributed being criticised, but you should remember - "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed for profit by others, do not submit it." This is written on the edit page of every article. I have edited plenty of articles myself, and have helped a few along to GA status, and one to FAC (recently TFA). Check my user page to see which - then look at the history of some of those articles. You'll see some quite merciless criticism in the reviews. You should remember that the people reading the article will not be able to assume anything, as an editor who contributed would - they don't have the expert knowledge. My role as a reviewer is to point that out. The article should be accessible for anyone.

I hope the process hasn't put you off, my first GA nomination was rejected out of hand in less than a day! I had a search on Google Book search for the cathedral and found quite a few references you may be interested in. I include them in my articles where relevant, I reference them as a book (although some of the sources I've used have been over 200 years old!). It may well be worth a look around.

Good articles
Seriously mate complaining to Jimbo Wales is about the least effective thing you can do about it. Speaking to Jimbo about encyclopedic content is about as useless as tits on a boar's head, to put it mildly. He rarely bothers responding or seems to show any interest to anything content related, except some controversial article but will happily answer to complaints about "rogue admin" etc. Yes often it does seem like nit-picking FA articles in particular you'll be astounded by how fussy people are over it. As I've said before there are thousands upon thousands of "good" B class articles but have minor issues which prevent them from being a GA. The best thing you can do is stick with it and look at the notes of the reviewer or conduct a peer review to get some feedback.

P.S. on a quick glance
Valley of Mexico looks an excellent start and I'm pretty sure it could pass GA with a bit of editing. If you need any help (having 41 GAs myself) let me know! I can look into it later if you like. The main problem initially I see is often you don't reference important claims in the article. Some of the lesser important sentences are referenced but some of the major claims you make are not backed up. Imagine you are a random reader. Think about it from another point of view. What would constitute an authoritive encyclopedia article. If there are important claims (as I've added cite tags to in the article) how do I go about making this seem accurate and verifiable to the reader and to improve its integrity?

Yes with GAs and FAs the writing might be even be brilliant but if it has some strong claims unreferenced or some minor MOS problems it will fail straight away. I know of many B class articles which in terms of content are superb but are failing in references and MOS problems which means that they ar enot even GA. You don't have to cite every single sentence but those which are solid facts or are strong claims would need to be sound with references. As I said think Verification. The reader needs to be assured that what they are reading is completely accurate and if they come across important information they need to check the source. Thats the beauty of wikipedia in that people can slag us off for being unreliable but if articles have many sources and references that can instantly be verified we become more of a platform for recirculating existing information rather than a primary source of doubt. This is why references are extremely important to this encyclopedia to make it more credible and avoid original research. Once you become accustomed with what is required you can let your writing do the talking and the GAs will soon come naturally. Expect a few knock backs along the way, I also hate criticism but try to utilise the negative feedback that others may give and turn it into ways you can increase your standard of writing, thats what I do. Congrats on the cathedral article. One thing the reviewer missed though is that without a doubt a citation needs to support the claim "the largest organ in the Americas". Valle de Chalco
Hello! I believe the redirect from Valle de Chalco Solidaridad to
Xico should be removed. I lived in Valle de Chalco for approximately five years, and absolutely NO ONE refers to it as Xico. In fact, if you say you live in Xico, and unless you are replying to a question about exactly where in Valle de Chalco you live, the assumption will be that you live in the town of Xico in the state of Veracruz. And even then, you are more likely to give the name of your colonia than just say "Xico."
You will also note that, in Spanish Wikipedia, Valle de Chalco Solidaridad has its own article, with no redirect to Xico.
I went ahead and wrote a new article on
Valle de Chalco. The reason I did this is because an administrator explained that your redirect could not be removed. However, you've got some great stuff in your article. Not only that, but it's silly to have "dueling articles." Would you be open to removing the redirect and combining the info from the two articles? Thanks.

Editorial Porrúa — these are both registered sociedad anónima company names, I don't think they need disambiguating or translating in the title.
Also depends on whether separate articles are desirable for the bookselling arm, and the publishing arm. I think, at this stage, we could probably combine info on these in the same article - would you agree? And if so, which do we put it under — I'd suggest the publishing arm as that would be more often linked to, but either really would work. Saludos, --

Barrios and Pulque
I'm glad to see that you got your hands on Barrios as a source for the Pulque article. Too bad it's no longer in print. Those sites you used are obviously modeled after Barrios. A lot has been lost during the repeated generations of plagerism. I was going to add her as a reference and begin to clean it up but it looks like you beat me to it. Let me also recommend Alfonso Caso's "The Aztecs - People of the Sun" page 48 as a description of the pulque gods.

Generally in Wikipedia the web sites would be put in an external links section and the books like Barrios and Caso would be in a references section. Caso's sources aren't always sited but generally they are probably the Florentine (Sahagun) Codex and the Codex Bourbunicus.

How are the classes?
I saw your comment on Himalayan Explorer's talk page, and remembered your classes. He is an astroundingly productive editor, actually, and is probably doing more to enhance the coverage of the underdeveloped parts of the world than anyone else. Honestly, he's scary. But, if you do have any class projects coming up, and you think I might be able to help, let me know. Particularly if it has anything to do with philosophy, mythology, or religion, which are basically my fields of greatest knowledge, such as it is.

Curiosity. What exactly would you mean by "Mexican" mythology? Presumably something other than the major Aztec, etc.? If you want, I think there might be some material around here on more recent mythology, but I'd have to check. If you think I could help, though, let me know. Aztec mythology was really unusual though. Particularly the incarnation of I think Quetzalcoatl who, if I remember right, walked the streets at night and had his chest open and close, showing no heart, to the sound of thunder. I read that about 20 years ago now, and it still creeps me out.

Puerto Escondido OAX
Hola! Oaxaca is probably my favorite state, although Michoacán and Chiapas are nice too. As for Puerto, I fear that it will forever be changed once the "freeway" from Oaxaca city is completed, but until then its still heaven on earth :-)
I recently added a panoramic photo of the Playa Principal, although I'm not so sure how well it fits in with where I placed it (no where seems quite right). --

I have a small apartment in Oaxaca city near el Centro. Continental has a weekly direct flight from Oaxaca/Xoxocotlán airport to Houston, so it makes travel between OAX and Texas easy -- if you don't mind flying in a coffin with wings! Have you been to the beaches around the Parque Nacional Lagunas de Chacahua, west of Puerto? Absolutely beautiful -- and untouched. If you have seen the movie

Greetings y Feliz Año Nuevo!! My internet is currently limited here, so I am not able to contribute to the Beer in Mexico article as much as I would like, however when I return in a few days, I'll see what I can add. I am still firmly against summarily deleting content just because the source is not the best -- rather I think room should be left for expansion and improvement of the source (as I noted in my comment on the Beer page). There are articles on celebrities based on friggin MySpace and YouTube fan pages -- and I certainly think a beer festival website is much more reputable than something run by a 15 year old.
Alas, the source-issues raised by Ronz are similar to ones I run into all the time in regards to Israeli/Arab/Middle Eastern cuisine -- lack of English sources and those that do exist are sometimes questionable in nature and/or political/promotional. For instance, Hummus has been repeatedly placed under protection due to edit warring over the use of the word "Israel" in the article. Some editors try to replace the word "Israel" with "Zionist Entity" or insert material sourced from "political newsletters" that state "Israeli solders make Palestinians drink urine and dance while singing about Hummus."... I mean, its insane... its friggin food! Anyhow, sorry to ramble. I'll check for more sources and hopefully be able to contribute more when I get back from my trip.
The 5x expansion results in obscure, new articles qualifying but expanded articles not qualifying. Let's change it to 5x or 3x if there is significant, quality expansion of a stub. I don't have time to lobby and campaign so feel free to start a talk page discussion and I authorise you to cut and paste this comment in up to three times.

An alternative way for recognition for article expansion is GA (good article). Believe me, it is not an easy process. Took me 2 months of work to get an article to GA, maybe a week if you work on it daily for a few hours.

Well it was a general sport complex as well, but the owner, Salvador Lutteroth was a wrestling promoter primarly but also promoted boxing so I'm not surprised it was used for Boxing right away, but it was built to accomodate the increasing crowds for wrestling - it doesn't conflict IMO but it definitly needs adding, I'll have a look at it.

Question about climate classification
One place where you could look is here:

I can't remember if I mentioned this before, but eventually I would like to develop a few articles on some of the more popular beers in Mexico. Note, I said popular beers in Mexico and not popular Mexican beers -- lol. I like to tell my friends in the US -- while they throw back a "fine" imported US$4.75 bottle of Corona -- that Corona in Mexico is the same as Bud Light in the US...ie: drinkable, but nothing special. Anyhow I've started an incubator for
Montejo, simply because I already had photos on hand. Who knows if it will ever reach the point of becoming an article, but I thought I would give it a try. Not much is written yet, as between traveling and work, I just haven't had much time to sit down and go searching for stuff. You're welcome to add to it, if you happen to come across any Montejo-related material while working on the "Beer in Mexico" article. ¡Saludos! --

6% figure comes from updated existing hydro output (of
commissioned plants #1-19) of at least 2,449 MW. (2,449 MW / 39,624 MW = .061 = 6.1%).

One thing. I'm a little skeptical of the number of 60,000 for dead or wounded on the insurgents side. That would be an extremely high casualty rate, even allowing for the lack of training and equipment. This source
[10] says "2000 killed, and many more wounded". Even being generous with the wounded, it's very unlikely that you'd get 60,000. My guess is that the source in the article is including the 40,000 (mentioned in the same source) in the number.

Oh yes, I remember starting some of the northern desert municipalities some of which are well over 1000 square kilometres and remember thinking how certain parts of the municipality undoubtedly differ from the main town. This is why ideally I think we should have seperate articles on both and also articles on other major towns and villages within the muniicpalities. Howveer, at present given the lack of people working on them it is best to merge the articles... Thanks for your help..

The municipalities of some of the northern states, especially Baja, are the exception, not the rule. Once you get out of the major deserts, municipalities are much, much, much smaller. For localities within a municipality (other than the seat), the name goes something like

Thats a tough one. I would probably go with Open chapel, simply because that's what most English speakers would search for. Of course, a clarification in regards to the Spanish name should go somewhere in the lede. Anyhow, I'm off to bed. You should try to make it through the cloud forests around Ixtlan sometime....simply enchanting. I only wish my trip to the US entailed a visit to NY or NJ as there is nothing like a good NY bagel. I have yet to have a yeast bread down here that isn't on the sweet side...ok maybe the bolillos don't taste sweet, but they're definitely not bagel material (or Challah material...or Jalapeno Cheese Bread mmmmm...) --

Hi. This annoying German who barely edits english wikipedia keeps reverting my map updates see
this. Which map would you prefer to use? Personally I find the blank Mexico map less professional looking than the relief map which is more realistic and gives the reader an idea of altitude which is very important. The rendering is much more attractive in my view. Which do you prefer,

I don't think you've properly looked at the changes I made. I didn't add any quotes, I just converted existing curly quotes to straight quotes, per
WP:MOS. I enclosed a few Spanish words and phrases in language templates and italicised them. They only appear once, so there was no question of repeating the italicisation, And I corrected a typo, which you've also reverted.

Ok, I'm unimpressed with the cheese stands at Benito Juarez & Abastos...Benito Juarez is surrounded by protesters and construction...and Abastos doesn't have any variety -- all Oaxaca cheese. I'm going to the sunday-only Pochote organic market tomorrow morning, and they should have a variety of local artisan cheeses...Last time I was there they even had Panela made with chapulines!! Keep your fingers crossed that its not shut down by protesters too.. --

Sierra Norte / Juárez
I have a feeling I have messed up... I started an article on
Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, mostly geographical (mountains, forests etc.), and then came across
Sierra Norte de Oaxaca which seemed to be a different name for the same region. Looking at the size, number of sources and inbound links for each article, I decided to merge Sierra Norte into Sierra Juárez. But now I have an uncomfortable feeling that Sierra Norte is a larger region, including Sierras Villa Alta, Ixtlán and Juárez (see map in the article). Do you know if that is the case?

I believe self published sources (such as the company website) are fine per
WP:SELFPUB which says "Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, usually in articles about themselves or their activities", as long as they aren't the only source.
The
general notability guidelines indicates that "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article" and I believe the subject meets this basic criteria through coverage by places like
the largest Malaysian newspaper,
WA Business News,
major wine magazines, and the NY Times among plenty of others but I'm happy to get more opinions.
As to the overly promotional nature of the article, I've tried to stick to well sourced facts, happy to accept assistance if you have suggestions on how to improve it though.

Cabe anotar que en modo alguno se presenta la geminación de las consonantes (por ejemplo d, t, p o g) posteriores a las líquidas r y l y la supresión de éstas: cad-do por caldo, at-to por alto (fenómeno propio del español de los departamentos de Bolívar, Sucre y Córdoba, y del Atlántico a partir de Sabanalarga).[2][1]
Salvo los localismos y las variantes fonéticas que se presentan como consecuencia normal de la expansión de toda lengua, y gracias a la morfosintaxis prácticamente idéntica a la del español estándar, el visitante originario de otras latitudes, cuya lengua madre sea el castellano, encontrará poca o ninguna dificultad en comunicarse con el barranquillero.

1921 Mexican Census
Hey, I'm using the 1921 Mexican census just as a reference to the last official time the Mexican government asked all Mexicans about their race (perception). Please don't remove it. I took like over 2 hours adding these things and researching it to better the article. And it's pretty annoying that you are throwing my time and work to the trash.
The website of the guy who researched the census is not one single personal website. this guy has written for LA Latino, Houston Culture, etc. The guy who researched it is not some random blogger, the document he researched is not false, and the his website is not a blog.
If you want to add something to the 1921 census mentioned in the states of Mexico, like "This was the last census to record race" or "Since then, the demographics have changed" then do so. But please don't just remove the stuff I put because I put time and effort into it.
So, please leave the census info there, and then, like I said, make it known that current demographics may have dramatically changed, but I think it is a good reference. And besides, it's an official government stat, it's not like Schmal is making the info up.
Can you at least (for the sake that I put out of my own time and effort) put the 1921 stats for each state in the "History" section? (And mention that since then, the population ethnic demographics may have changed dramatically). --

No, it would require that a good secondary source discusses the sentence and suggests that it is of particular relevance for understanding the demographic development of the states. As it is the information is poorly source and it is not at all obvious why it would be relevant for readers to know how many people described themselves as "indigena pura" or "blanco" or "indigena mezclado" in 1921.

Request for input in drafting potential guidelines

There are, at present, no particular clear guidelines for religious material here, or, for that matter, guidelines for how to deal with ideas in general, particularly those ideas which might be accepted as true by individuals of a given religious, political, or scientific stance. There have been attempts in the past to draft such guidelines, but they have quickly been derailed. I am dropping this note on the talk pages of a number of editors who I believe have some interest in these topics, or have shown some ability and interest in helping to develop broad topic areas, such as yourself, and asking them to review the material at
User:John Carter/Guidelines discussion and perhaps take part in an effort to decide what should be covered in such guidelines, should they be determined useful, and what phrasing should be used. I also raise a few questions about broader possible changes in some things here, which you might have some more clear interest in. I would be honored to have your input.
