Elena Vladimirovna Roslyakova ( Russian: Елена Владимировна Рослякова; 8 July 1987) known professionally as Vlada Roslyakova, is a Russian-American model and actress. She has been called by Vogue Paris one of the top models of the 2000s decade and one of the most influential Russian models of all time, alongside Natalia Vodianova and Natasha Poly. [2] [3] [4]

Early life

Roslyakova was born on 8 July 1987 in Omsk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union to a lower class family. [5] She was discovered in her hometown of Omsk, Russia, which is located in the Siberian Region where she would get her nickname Siberian Princess. Vlada would do local work before her rise to fame in 2004. Her mother Olga allowed her to model, but her father who was a Police Officer was hesitant but her mother convinced him to let her go. [6]

Early work 2003-2006

At the start of her modeling career, Roslyakova changed her name from Elena to Vlada in order to distinguish herself from another model named Elena Rosenkova. Vlada is in honor of her fathers name, Vladimir Roslyakov.

Roslyakova went to work in Japan for the first time and signed a contract there for 2 years. She shared that she didn't speak a word of English at first.

As a young girl, Roslyakova was told by many she should consider modeling. She was scouted in her home town Omsk at age 14, which she would sign to her mother agency in 2003. [7] She did photoshoots and local work in her town. She then was sent to Tokyo in 2004 by her agency for two months and after her contract finished in Tokyo, she was immediately was sent to Paris Fashion Week. Which started her career international career during the Spring/Summer 2005 season. [1] Roslyakova would walk 16 fashion shows in the Spring/Summer 2005 season. [8]

Rise to fame 2007 - Present

Roslyakova belongs in the "Wide Eyed Doll" era of models, along with models Sasha Pivovarova, Jessica Stam, Lily Cole, and Gemma Ward. [9]

In 2005 Roslyakova, landed her first Vogue cover for Vogue France. During her second season on the runways (Fall/Winter 2005) Roslyakova walked in 78 shows during the ready-to-wear season in all the major fashion capitals, and during the Fall/Winter 2006 runway season Roslyakova walked 86 or 92 shows (only including NYC, London, Paris, and Milan).

Her runway credits include top fashion houses and designers like Alberta Ferretti, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Blumarine, Bottega Veneta, Burberry Prorsum, Calvin Klein, Céline, Chanel, Chloé, Christian Dior, Comme des Garçons, Dolce & Gabbana, DSquared², Emanuel Ungaro, Emilio Pucci, Etro, Fendi, Gianfranco Ferré, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Gucci, Hermès, Jean Paul Gaultier, Jil Sander, Kenzo, Lanvin, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, MaxMara, Missoni, Miu Miu, Moschino, Mugler, Nina Ricci, Prada, Roberto Cavalli, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sonia Rykiel, Stella McCartney, Valentino, Versace, Viktor & Rolf, Yohji Yamamoto and Yves Saint Laurent. In 2007 Roslyakova appeared on the cover of Vogue Brasil.

In the Spring/Summer 2009 season, Vlada Roslyakova and model Kasia Struss were tied for walking the most shows that season, both of them walked 72 shows. [12]

September of 2023, she was a NYFW exclusive and returned to the catwalk for Ralph Lauren Spring/Summer 2024, she had not walked for the Ralph Lauren brand in nearly 6 years.

Vogue Paris declared her one of the top 30 models of the 2000s. [13]

Roslyakova has been called a Supermodel and catwalk legend by American Vogue. [14] As of 2024 she is one of the top 10 most popular Russian models. [15]

In 2024 she revealed she would be apart of a podcast called the 'Fashion Host Podcast' alongside fellow model Ines Crnokrak. [16]

Advertising Campaigns

In 2008 she became the brand ambassador and face for designer Karl Lagerfeld, replacing Gemma Ward. Roslyakova also became the face of Dolce & Gabbana in 2007. She has been featured in advertising campaigns for Nina Ricci, Moschino, Hermès, MaxMara, Christian Lacroix, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Viktor & Rolf, Jill Stuart Beauty, DKNY, Roberto Cavalli, Daks Japan, Gap, Barney's, Anna Sui, Etro, Cartier, Sonia Rykiel, Belstaff, Hobbs, Alcacuz, Swarovski, Diamond Dazzle, Derercuny, Victoria's Secret, Karl Lagerfeld and Lacoste. She has also appeared in look-books for Prada, Chanel, Gucci, Versace, Givenchy, Donna Karan, Lanvin, Ralph Lauren, Alberta Ferretti, and many more.

In 2010 she was the look-book model for Versace Fall/Winter 2010 catalog.

In 2020, Roslyakova appeared in the Badgely Mischka Spring-Summer campaign and also in the Desigual Campaign collaboration with Christian Lacroix. [17]

Acting Career

Roslyakova played as 'Olga' in a short film Julie Babie, she has been in many short films.

Personal life

Roslyakova speaks Russian, English, and French.

She currently lives in New York City. In a 2023 Instagram post, she revealed she became a naturalized American citizen.

In an 2023 interview she revealed that, "I continue to work as a model, but much less than before - I’ve still been doing this for scary to say how many years. Fashion is not only about clothes, but also about people. But, fortunately, I have enough for my bread and butter, although I no longer shoot for advertising campaigns that would be displayed all over the world." She also revealed in the interview she was previously married but has been divorced since 2020. [18]
