Hi Emargie! I came across this article while patrolling new pages, and I have one suggestion to improve it. Essentially, the article could use an introductory sentence or 2, describing in a nutshell who this person was, and why they are notable. Reading into it, I got a feel for this, but normally the Manual of Style for articles likes to have a lead-in section. Something like "John Dustin Bicknell was a <description> who <reason he is notable, thing he is most known for, etc>", which then leads into the rest of the article describing his roots, education, and such as it there now. Nice work! I've always found that institution interesting - I guess in part because it was apparently among the most nationally notable institutions in L.A. County for a decade or two. Anyway, I also noted that you haven't been using inline citations, and I'd like to encourage you to do so. They are confusing at first, but they do make articles more useful and verifiable for future readers and editors. For an example of simple citations, you can see the recently featured article William Butler Yeats. The guideline is at Wikipedia:Citing sources. It goes into too much detail, but the most useful stuff is at the beginning. I now regret that I didn't use inline citations on some of the articles I wrote long ago - it's so much easier to cite while writing than to try to figure it out years later. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 08:43, 24 December 2008 (UTC) reply

I checked it (I have been working on the Yorba's - Bernardo Yorba and José Antonio Yorba). There was almost nothing in Don Bernardo Yorba Ranchhouse about the the Ranchhouse. No other article referenced it. Yorba Hacienda is a good article.

About the California-wide list of Ranchos: I think it is definitely great to have a complete list. That will be a great reference. It is not so clear that every one of the ranchos needs a separate article though. So, I would hope you'd work on the most notable ones, the ones having plenty of available documentation. For less notable ones, where little info is available, you might want to just provide a short description in the list-article, and just name them without making a wikilink. That is a helpful suggestion. I will think about what columns the list should have, and put it on the talk page before I start again. On List of Ranchos of California, it looks like there's something weird with the opening paragraph...

Do you have access to Beck and Haase's Historical Atlas of California (either edition) or the new one by Derek Hayes? I think they all have complete tables of the Ranchos by county.

El Escorpión is fun; Miguel Leonis of the Leonis Adobe acquired it by "marrying a Chumash woman" (presumably Espiritu Chujilla though my source doesn't say so) (it's part of the "much of the west end of the San Fernando Valley" that he controlled). It needs an article of its own one of these days, and it's on the Hall map so I can do the tinted-overlay thing for that one as well.

No eyebrows would be raised by your deleting a PROD tag. The whole point of those is to have an expeditious way of deleting articles that no one thinks should remain. Anyone can delete them, which still eaves the door open for traditional deletion discusions at WP:AFD. Incidentally the editor who placed the tag erred by not informing the article creator of the PROD. I've now removed the tag because, after a review, it appears to me that the subject is notable due to the number so sources and his role in Los Angeles history.   Will Beback  talk  21:28, 29 May 2009 (UTC) reply

I think there's still room for improvement on the article. I'm not entirely certain about the sequence of how the Berreyesa brothers lost the Rancho—there are conflicting sources, and not enough detail. When was their first parcel sold? How many did they sell? What kind of gambling was going on? What were the details surrounding the 20,000 acre auction? Also: when did their dad die? What happened to his adobe? Did the brothers lose the four square miles they tried to keep? Did the relatives win any court battles? Did the brothers die on their own property? Where did all the descendants go off to?

Hi Emargie. Please take a look at Rancho Jurupa. I thought it would be a good idea to create an infobox for each Rancho, although I'm not sure I used the best template. Please take a look and let me know what you think. I'm OK if you want to remove the one I inserted, but I do think an infobox would be a good idea. MissionInn.Jim, I think a info box for each each Rancho is a great idea. The Rancho's don't really exist any more, and info box you have is not quite right - cross between a region and a historic site. Why don't we work on one - should include the info in the List of Ranchos of California table. We can use Rancho Jurupa as a test. When we get it done, we can seek a wider consensus. The grants were very vaguely defined by geographic features and given in spanish leagues (which would be the 4428 number). But the league number just a general guide and we are talking large areas - 1 league is about 7 sq miles (640 acres to the sq. mile). So "1 league" could turn out to be different from 4428 acres. Hi Emargie. I have no idea if I'm doing this talk page right. I recieved your message about the Rancho Guadalasca page and am not wiki savy just yet so I hope this is right. I believe everything I have added to the page is on topic and relevant. Your contribution was simply the definition of the land grant, but I am providing a detailed history and time line so that users may become more familiar with the piece of land. Just defining it and giving the names of the land owners isn't enough information. The information I provided is research done by the California State University Channel Islands and, other than it being a source, I don't see how you think my addition is more about the University than the land. The land is now being utilized for the University and that is all I stated about it. I provided the history of the land before it became the rancho, how it became the rancho, what it is, who it was purchased by and why, as well as the archaeological finds that have been collected there. All of the information you provided previously is still encorporated into the page, I just simply gave it more detail. My contribution to the page is a homework assignment. If you really feel the need to delete all of my hard work and keep our eager users in the dark about the details of the rancho, then that is your decision. But please wait until Wednesday to delete our work so we can show our professor first. I do, however, believe it is a great addition and provides greater insight for viewers who want to know the history of the grant. Emergie; Your recent change under Louis Rubidoux includes the comment "sucessful, but not that sucessful". I suspect you were thinking that the article was saying Rubidoux was the second Mayor of LA, but what the statement actually said was that Benjamin Wilson, the man that Rubidoux purchased his property from, was the the second mayor of LA. Sorry about that - the evidence appeared to point to them being the same person (their portraits show the family resemblance) but on reading more carefully, I saw that they were brothers. I've now also created a disambiguation page to help make that clear.

Hi Emargie ! Thank you for creating the Rancho El Escorpión article. Since my first well intentioned but misguided ("oh-be kind to newbies") rewrite of 24 February I've discovered your incredible work on so many ranchos. Wonderful and appreciated. On El Escorpión & my interest: I grew up on one of its boundaries when it was still undeveloped with old Valley Oaks & its adobes. However didn't know of the rancho's name/history then (probably few locals did besides Kathleen Beachy and Mary Orcutt). Around 2000 'by accident' did learn - wow.

Since then have researched it a lot, but casually without 'citation' records. Hence most of my Feb. 24 first un-cited changes, I'm sorry. Been busy, since your appropriate revert back to verifiable info, retracing research steps. I respect your having a continuity of form for all the rancho articles. No disrespectful intentions with this submission. A first pass getting new verifiable info out. Will improve footnote formatting and get more p. & pp. info entered. Please let me know about any concerns you have. I just figured out 'talk-page' about Rancho E.E, and so sorry for previous edits without my explaining. Please be aware that rollback should be used to revert vandalism/spam/blatantly unconstructive edits, and that using it to revert anything else (such as by revert-warring or reverting edits you disagree with) can lead to it being removed from your account...sometimes without any warning, depending on the admin who becomes aware of any misuse. Hi Emargie, First, an immense and generous thank you for the ranchos topic idea and individual articles' efforts you share. They are one of the most wonderful wiki-resources I use.

Just spent awhile trying to determine present day Toluca Lake, California's rancho provenance, with the 1880 and 1889 maps in articles of 'R. Provedencia' - 'R. Cahuenga' - 'R. Ex-Mission' - & 'Valley to 1915' giving a clue (that Tujunga Wash & L.A. River do shift). In process added the 1880 Valley Map of File:San Fernando Valley all Hall Map 1880.png to R. Ex-Mission page, per your review.

Is it correct that most of Toluca Lake was in Mission & Ex-Mission lands, with easternmost part in Provedencia? The actual lake is shown in some vintage maps. Contemporary maps show a whole diagonal shift of street grid (city of Burbank ?), that may align with R. Prov. orig. west boundary ? Hi Emargie, read your message and do not understand the "category question" - there is a new Category:Ranchos of Los Angeles County, California under parent categories of Category:History of Los Angeles County, California and Category:California ranchos. I chose to leave individual articles also in Category:Geography of Los Angeles County, California at least until completed with new L.A. tags. Was going to ask you if one should leave that tag even after done, since all the statewide ranchos articles are individually in each county's geography category, and some people might always look there for them ? What is the problem please ?

Please try to be kind in tone in your communication. It's because you have done an amazing job of so many articles for L.A. that it is more than one setting to corral them all under the new tag. By the way per: "you might note that he replaced" - I was the one today that replaced-removed MissionJim's "perhaps over parenting category tags" - including the 'Category:Geography of Riverside County' from 'Category:Ranchos of R.C.', since individual articles were there already (check its history of edits to confirm or improve). I do think his and my efforts are useful, different readers access info by very different routes. Currently trying to find a rancho for a specific location, ie: San Rafael Hills - who was here ? - is a long scroll of the big list. It's wonderful and very interesting when one has the time, but inadequate for efficient research otherwise. Part of why all the L.A. articles are not tagged to new Category is the list format's search & hunt needs. Please understand the list is fine !, but some of us need another route too. Will follow your suggestion to delete Category:Geography of Los Angeles County, California from them, when all are in Category:Ranchos of Los Angeles County, California. The History section seems to be largely about Colonel Leander Ransom and not this rancho. It's not said why the land ends up being transferred from Jose Agricio, though I suspect from the timeline that it became property of the US as spoils of war and then was granted to Ransom. The comment "the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored" seems to say, though, that existing grants would be honored, which would then prompt one to ask how/why Ransom got it.

Can I suggest that the second graph under History be moved to a new page for Colonel Leander Ransom and that the (Ransom) be dropped from the title to this page? There are a number of pages that can then be linked to the new Ransom page (is there a tool to do this automatically)?
