From my reading of the entries, the Japanese force in Karafuto/South Sakhalin & the Kuriles appears to have been the Japanese Fifth Area Army, rather than the Kwantung Army. Does that sound right? Buckshot06 ( talk) 06:56, 6 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Hi, a while ago you created an article on this place on WP, including its coordinates. Do you remember where exactly the coordinates and the Chinese characters were from? The problem is that there are a number of places with that name in Inner Mongolia, and that they may have different characters representing them (one 红格尔 sum in Siziwang Banner of Ulanqab, one 洪格尔 in Sonid Left Banner of Xilin Gol League, another place named 洪格尔 in the Sonid Right Banner of the same League, possibly some more), and it is hard to determine which of these places your coordinates refer to. But what exactly is your reason to believe 红格尔图 (which looks more like a transcription of Hongort, i.e. something like the locative case of Hongor) refers to modern-day Hobor (quite a different name, actually) and not to, say, the 红格尔图镇 in Chahar Right Back Banner?

I also could not easily find any 红格尔图 on this or this map, but maybe I just did not hard enough. Could you give me the coordinates?

I Did not have any coordiantes on 红格尔图, it was just the name of the battle given in Guo Rugui's account. According to Guo Rugui, 第二部分：从“九一八”事变到西安事变日本侵绥的战备企图和中日 2, "红格尔图属绥远陶林县". Hongge’ertu was the Suiyuan town of Taolinxian 陶林县 or T'ao-Lin according to the period topo map: Chi-Ning nk49-9. It is currently called Hobor in Inner Mongolia. It had a stategic position linking Shangdu to the advance base at Bailingmiao and was in a pass along the route for the Mongolians intended advance south to take Baotou and Jining. Hi! I still could not find any place called Hung-ke-erh-t'u or 红格尔图 (or something similar) near Taolinxian. I have no doubt that Taolinxian is identical to Hobor, the question is whether 红格尔图 is the same as Taolinxian. An automatic translation of "红格尔图属绥远陶林县，为千余人口的小镇，西距县城80公里，南离集宁90公里，东距敌伪盘踞的商都30公里，为绥、察交界之要冲，是绥东北的门户，是商都通往百灵庙的必经之地。驻守这里的是骑兵第1师彭毓斌部的3个连。" (from http://www.wehoo.net/book/wlwh/a30012/04580.htm seems to indicate that while 红格尔图 was part of 陶林 county of Suiyuan province, Honggort was in fact located about 80 km east of the county center, 90 km north of Jining, and only 30 km from Shangdu (and had only about(?) 1000 inhabitants). In other words, Taolin(xian?) city and Honggort are two different places, 80 kms apart, and Honggort is not so far from Shangdu. I am of course no sure how god your Chinese is (mine is close to non-existent), but maybe this is just the kind of question to ask at WP-project China? Just found a Hung-ko-erh-t'u at about 113°15'E, 41°40'N. It is on the northwestern road from Shangdu (which, just in case, is not to be confused with that other Shangdu), according to the map it is walled and the distance to Shangdu is 33km. But also according to the map, it is located in Chahar, not in Suiyuan. Yaan ( talk) 13:56, 17 September 2008 (UTC) reply

Acording to the source I had, the 1939–1940 Winter Offensive was its own Offensive, an attempt by the KMT to roll back the effects of the Japanese Wuhan Offensive and subsequent offensives gains, on he basis that the Japanese were spreading out their forces for occupation and were vulnerabls using guerilla attacks as shown in the Battle of Changsha (1939). It only seemed to work well in Battle of Wuyuan and later in Battle of South Guangxi/ Battle of Kunlun Pass but it did tie up the Japanese for a while undoing it elsewhere.

I think the Red Chinese may have done the Hundred Regiments Offensive because some of them came to think the Japanese were vulnerable or at least thought they needed to initate that offensive to look like they were holding up their part of their United Front with the KMT. They had obstructed or attacked KMT forces operations in or near their base areas during the offensive according to Hsu Long-hsuen. I beleve Mao was not in favor of it, and he seemed to have been right, as it provoked the Three Alls counteroffensive against the Reds that did a lot of damage to them. (BTW I think an expanded article on the counter insurgency campaigns of the Three Alls Policy would be a good addition to the Second Sino-Japanese War).

See the sources, most of the account comes from the condensed English translation of a multi volume histoy, Hsu Long-hsuen and Chang Ming-kai, History of The Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) 2nd Ed., 1971. I see you added California as a belligerent in the Indian Wars. Is there any reason why you think it should be listed separately, instead of a part of the United States of America? California was an independent belligerent in many cases. Between 1850 and 1854 the gold rush caused many of the the few U. S. Army troops in the state to desert in great numbers and then drove wages and prices up so that there was great difficulty recruiting or retaining them or supplying them. Before the railroads, California was economically isolated from the rest of the U. S. by the costs involved in sending goods from the East and dependent on local goods.

California organized large numbers of militia troops mainly to put down bandits and Indian uprisings, mostly because U. S. Army troops would not or could not act against them. It was a political issue no governor could ignore in a state with a large mostly young male population that demanded and expected action and were quite capable of doing it on their own if need be and making the offending governor or party pay at the next election or sooner, as did the 1856 vigilace commitee in San Francisco. There were a number of campaigns against the Indians fought with California Militia from the time of statehood up thru the Civil War. Many of the Volunteers were former California militiamen who joined the ranks during the Civil War. California volunteers fought Indians all over the Pacific slope of the U. S. and New Mexico Territory during the Civil war. A couple of serious wars that Federal troops did not have much involvement, (only a little in 1861 in the Bald Hills War) or no involvement, (in the Owens Valley Indian War). Note the U. S. Army makes no mention of these in their list of Army campaigns vs the Indians, because they were basically California military affairs even if carried out technically as U. S. Army operations, California officers and troops carried them out at the behest of California governors. While it was an interesting theory to try and link several military actions together, I do consider that to be original research as it is unsupported by reliable sources or scholarly research by established historians.

It was added early on it seems, not by me. Somehow whoever added it managed to avoid an edit entry in the Veiw History. It is probably a cut and paste of the Dyers Compendium entry on the service of this unit on this website of Civil War units: Union Regimental Histories, Nebraska Should be referanced in notes and can be cleaned up for better understanding of the service of the unit, Link to locations, battles etc. Or expand into a section on the history of the units service. Super!! Thank you! By the way you might find this page useful for Google books references it's the Google Book Citation creator. For other citations there is a helpful application Wikipedia citation generator. You just put in the URL of whatever you're citing and you get the framework at least of the citation. For mapping, the most useful things I've found is a page which lets you find Latitute/Longitude from addresses or locations. I sure do remember you. Long time no hear from!:^) I see from your page you have been busy in the real world. I on the other hand have been retired for a few years. I keep puttering away on Wikipedia but not on China history but more on our local history things related to 19th century California history, people, trails and old wagon and stage roads through southern California, and the southwest USA. Also the steamboats in the state especially on the Colorado River. Also have some things coming on conflicts here with a bandit gang in San Luis Obispo County, the native people and especially one between factions in old San Bernardino before the American Civil War that seems was never correctly understood by local historians.
