Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:22, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
Greetings WikiProject New Jersey/Archive 6 Members!
This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:
If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.
Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.
Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
Best regards, Stevietheman — Delivered: 18:05, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Many participants here create a lot of content, may have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.
So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:
You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Archive 6/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject New Jersey.
We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:
We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject New Jersey, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

While the article Local government in New Jersey makes clear the different types of municipalities and forms of government, it does not discuss what each type is responsible for (maintenance of roads, schools, water/sewer, police/fire, ect). Do all types of municipalities have general policing powers? Does the state regulate different types of municipalities differently? Do different classes have different powers devolved to them? Cross post from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New York City Public Transportation#Jersey City railroads running parallel to NJ 139.
Backstory: I was doing research for the Holland Tunnel article when I discovered that in 1927, the builders were involved in a legal dispute with the Erie Railroad over rail yards. So I started investigating, and it seemed like the rail yard dispute centered around the plot of land where I-78 and NJ 139 merge, here 40°43′52″N 74°03′04″W / 40.731°N 74.051°W. Simple enough.
I went to Google Maps and saw an abandoned rail viaduct just south of I-78, and looked it up. It led me to our Bergen Arches page, which has an image of the right of way passing under I-78 before heading into an abandoned tunnel. Still OK.
Then I saw the Hudson County Railroad map and looked up the National Docks Secondary. Now here's the confusing part. That page says that the secondary heads into the Long Dock Tunnel at its northern end, and that the tunnel runs parallel to the NJ 139 open cut. Why, then, does the Bergen Arches page refer to a cut that runs parallel to NJ 139, and then give this coordinate 40°44′13″N 74°03′34″W / 40.7369°N 74.0594°W? It seems to point to the Long Dock Tunnel, which has very similar coordinates. 40°44′08″N 74°03′27″W / 40.7355°N 74.0574°W. I thought that was the Long Dock Tunnel. Both articles give only fleeting mentions of the other. Are they parallel, and if so, which one is located to the north and which one is located to the south? Finally, should they still be two separate articles? epicgenius ( talk) 20:20, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{ Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:49, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Would anyone here be interested in a task force on South Jersey specific articles? Lately I've been editing articles in Atlantic and Cape May County, but I realize that there are some important topics that cover the entire region ( Pinelands National Reserve, Atlantic City Expressway, the Kirkwood–Cohansey aquifer, various wildlife, farm towns, tourism towns). New Jersey is a pretty big state for being such a small state, so I wonder, is there anyone here interested in a South Jersey task force within WPNJ? ♫ Hurricanehink ( talk) 20:22, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
I am very concerned about the following from the article: "Literature from the time of the parkway's construction indicates that the parkway would become toll-free once bonds used for its construction were paid off. " This claim has no notation and no substantiation. It has been an Urban Legend in NJ for decades and as yet, no one has ever been able to produce any definitive proof of it. Unless Wiki has the original enabling legislation from 1951 or some other reliable documentation (NOT just "it's been said"), you should rethink this assertion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bknewman ( talk • contribs) 16:16, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

Radburn, New Jersey is in fact an incorporated community, not an unincorporated one. While it is not incorporated as itself, it is still an incorporated part of the borough Fair Lawn, New Jersey. I would not call the West Village an unincorporated community, it is a neighborhood in incorporated New York City, or Hollywood is a community within incorporated Los Angeles; all are within the governance area of a municipal corporation, and it would be more accurate to just call all of these in New Jersey "communities" or "neighborhoods". More simply, per Local government in New Jersey there are no unincorporated areas in the state. I would suggest just changing these to say "Radburn is a community located within..." It can link to Local_government_in_New_Jersey#Communities, which Oknazevad renamed: "lead with the most salient fact: there are no unincorporated communities in New Jersey. Period. There may be neighborhoods of distinct character, but to call them "unincorporated communities" is a total misnomer and should not be done." This shouldn't be difficult to do in bulk with AWB. I am also concerned with the notability of a number of these that are that are not neighborhoods of a distinct character or historically separate but are rather modern subdivisions/housing developments that do not have the significant sources that would pass WP:GEOLAND#2, but that's for another time. Reywas92 Talk 22:48, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
I'm going to say what I've said before. The use of the term "unincorporated community" for any part of New Jersey is plain wrong. Every square inch of the state is part of one and only one incorporated municipality. There is no unincorporated county land, so there's no places analogous to East Los Angeles, California, or Paradise, Nevada, for example, and there's only one level of municipal government in New Jersey, so there's nothing analogous to hamlets in New York. We really shouldn't be using the term in relation to New Jersey at all. It is misleading to readers. Also, I think, as a whole, we spend way too many bytes on census designated places, not just in New Jersey, but throughout the entire country. As noted in the article on them, they're really just bureaucratic ledger entries and can be transitory in shape and size. They're not really notable, and have very little meaning beyond that administrative purpose. Do we really need a separate article for the Toms River CDP considering the only difference is the omission of the Dover Beaches CDPs, which are tiny, otherwise not independently notable, have articles that are entirely repetitious of the main Toms River articles save for the regurgitation of boilerplate statistics, and not even at their common names? No, we don't. Simply creating articles because an administrative statistical index includes a name shows a lack of significant comprehension and engagement with the subject. Most, of not all, CDP articles should redirect to the actual places they are located in. oknazevad ( talk) 12:52, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
Since New Jersey has CDPs and the Census Bureau says (bold mine) that
"Census Designated Places (CDPs) for the 2020 Census-Final Criteria". Federal Reigister. November 11, 2018. Retrieved March 8, 2020. Census designated places (CDPs) are statistical geographic entities representing closely settled, unincorporated communities that are locally recognized and identified by name.
that there are unincorporated communities in New Jersey which easily fit the description.

So someone has been updating the county navboxes to include all CDPs used for the 2020 census. Again, I wonder what's the point? CDPs are transitory bureaucratic conveniences that change every ten years. They do not have the permanence and significance of actual municipalities, and the criteria used to delineate them by the Census Bureau changes each census. This time around they decided to treat residential college campuses as separate CDPs for their own administrative convenience, for example. That does not make them equivalent to municipalities in any meaningful way, and yet by listing them in the navboxes that's exactly what we are doing. We already have gone and removed inappropriate listing in the past, and I think this expansion is just as inappropriate as ever, and I think they should be removed. It's not like they aren't part of an incorporated municipality already just like every single square inch of the state, so their inclusion ks redundant to the municipalities they are already part of.
I genuinely don't think any separate articles on CDPs in New Jersey should exist; the fact that a neighborhood of a municipality is marked as a CDP by the Census Bureau can be mentioned in the appropriate article on the municipality or neighborhood (the latter of which should only exist if the neighborhood shows independent notability outside of being a CDP), but CDPs are not themselves notable as, again, they're just bureaucratic conveniences, not actual places. oknazevad ( talk) 20:42, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
It is irrelevant that the CDPs and other unincorporated communities in NJ are part of an incorporated municipality. They represent clearly identifiable, recognized, named places, sections, districts, areas, neighborhoods, areas, etc. Some are more well-known - ( Iselin, Ocean Grove, Radburn, for example - than others. While some neighborhoods might be debatable ( Wikipedia:GEOLAND), most CDP's in NJ are very clearly defined settlements (see above Census Bureau definition), and for the completeness any encyclopedia should have, all warrant inclusion. I added a recipe to Template talk:NJ Essex County Freeholders explaining how to replace Freeholder with the new term Commissioner.
This should be done for all counties.
A list of affected templates can be found by going to Special:Search, and searching for Freeholder in the Template namespace: [1]
If you fix this for a county freeholder template page, it would be good to note that here and in the talk page for the county freeholder template. When listing fixed county freeholder template pages here, it would be convenient to keep them in alphabetical order by county.

Now I have contacted Bing and their support states they do not own the info placed on the snapshots and that they are scrapped from outside sources. )and turns it into something like
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{ cite web}}, {{ cite journal}} and {{ doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Suggest updating every municipality to add information on the 2021 state legislative districts since they will take effect for voting in fall 2023 and for representation starting with the 2024 legislative session. See Madison, New Jersey#Federal, state and county representation for an example. Bruce Esrig ( talk) 05:24, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at
Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent
Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{
WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{ WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{
WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.

Looking at the photo of the albany street bridge ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Albany_Street_Bridge,_1910.png), which is apart of a larger arial of New Brunswick ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aero_view_of_New_Brunswick,_New_Jersey,_1910_(cropped).png) these files are both noted as being illustrations from 1910. However, the discrepancy is the addition of the boathouse attached downstream of the bridge, which reportedly washed away in 1882 ( https://www.rucrew.com/history).
