Hurricane Gloria under FA Review

I have nominated Hurricane Gloria for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regards to the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. George Ho ( talk) 02:24, 9 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Please follow the standards of other tornado year articles, as you did not follow them here. Also, please link where that "user request" is. I want to see the reason why they wanted that in there. Poodle23 ( talk) 23:33, 9 January 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Poodle23: Apologies for breaking standards. I got a request from User:TropicalAnalystwx13 off-wiki to move his sandbox to List of tornadoes in the May 2003 tornado outbreak sequence. I noticed that the list article originally included tornadoes on April 30 to May 2nd, which weren't part of the main outbreak sequence, so I figured there would have to be a list for both April (part of a January to April list) and May. I mistakenly added the sub-sections. ♫ Hurricanehink ( talk) 18:11, 10 January 2023 (UTC) reply
It's fine. Poodle23 ( talk) 20:16, 10 January 2023 (UTC) reply

I am aware that sourcing for lists can be a little more concise than for articles, but I don't believe any of these lists is suitable for mainspace with no sources at all. Suggest keeping this in draft until sourced. Cheers -- Elmidae ( talk · contribs) 10:34, 10 January 2023 (UTC) reply

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. What an exciting storm

This has been quite an exciting storm to track. John 1994's record will be on the line this week since the storm is now at 28 days of existence. MFR predicts it to be TC intensity on March 9 in 120h. Noah Talk 13:03, 4 March 2023 (UTC) reply

Seems extremely likely that John will be eclipsed now barring some major unforeseen event. Also, Ioke's ACE record may be on the line as well. Freddy has an impressive 72.7 units of ACE currently. Noah Talk 16:59, 6 March 2023 (UTC) reply

FAC mentor

Hello Hurricanehink: I'm interested in nominating " Cross Road Blues", a 1936 song by Robert Johnson, as a FA candidate. A mentor is strongly advised and I see you've listed among your interests "American pop music after 1920". It looks like most of your recent edits are to weather-related articles, but thought maybe you might have some interest. Any suggestions are appreciated. Ojorojo ( talk) 17:55, 29 June 2023 (UTC) reply

Working on a draft for future FA status

If time were to permit, would you wish to help me finish the above draft? I have already done much of the work, and using this draft as a basis, would like to eventually bring the article itself up to FA-class. I do have some issues with the draft as is: for example, I am trying to convert 1926 ₤ to contemporary USD, for the Bahamian losses. Is there a template or conversion that could help? I cannot find appropriate sources online. Also, I found an image in a newspaper article on Newspapers.com that highlights damage in the Bahamas. Would I violate copyright by clipping it and uploading it to the Wikimedia Commons? As mentioned, I am hoping to bring the main article up to FA status, which would be a first for me, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you lack the time, please feel free to refer me to some other excellent users here who might be available. Thank you! CapeVerdeWave ( talk) 21:41, 5 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Thank you for the advice on currencies. Regarding the article: I need more sources on the impact in the Caribbean, particularly Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. Do you know of archival repositories online that provide contemporaneous Spanish-language and other newspapers from the region? Also, as mentioned, one of the clippings from Newspapers.com that I used in the draft contains a picture showing damage on Bimini. Does copyright allow me to use it? I think I can locate enough information for Georgia and other states beyond Florida, but unfortunately I lack sufficient inline citations for Northeast Florida; neither Newspapers.com nor Newspaper Archive had a lot of data from this region. Notably, newspapers from Jacksonville are not available. (There was information from New Smyrna, but the local paper covered the storm rather briefly.) As mentioned, my intention is to bring the main article up to FA status, using the completed draft as a basis. To do so I need more pictures from the hardest-hit areas, so I am wondering whether newspaper clippings are permissible, given copyright. Once again, I greatly appreciate any and all assistance. Hello, Hurricanehink. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, " List of United States tornadoes in May 2003".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 ( talk), and Cwmhiraeth ( talk)

Hello Hurricanehink,

A couple years ago you assisted me with looking over Tropical Storm Hernan (2020) for a potential A-class review before I went on an extended Wikibreak. An Idea

Considering how much needs to be done for the project, I had the idea of creating a project council to facilitate the day-to-day affairs of the project. The council would consist of project advisors (must be B Rank or higher), a project chief, and a project master (both must be at least A rank). The latter two positions are elected while the first position is open to anyone who is at least B Rank and hasn't been blocked in the last 6 months. Terms will be 6 months for the elected positions while advisors may serve at their own pleasure. These two people are responsible for leading the project and working with the council on actively reducing backlogs and proposing improvements. The council as a whole would work to select vital articles for the project. The advisors would also serve as mentors to those in the lowest four ranks. Anyone who has signed up for the awards scheme and has been ranked I-F will automatically be assigned an advisor by either the chief or the master unless other arrangements are proposed. I envision said council coming up with the vital articles list, reducing backlogs, proposing and writing out guides and common practices, and mentoring newcomers. I also redid the award scheme to be kinda video gamey to be attractive to younger editors so it may get usage. I also reduced the amount of levels significantly for simplicity. What are your thoughts on this? Noah, AA Talk 19:37, 18 October 2023 (UTC) reply

Willa and Lane

Hey, would you be able to throw up some academic literature for Willa and Lane (sometime before 2024) if I send it your way to review for relevance? Last thing I'm wanting is for a FTRC of the Category 5 topic considering how long it has stood for (also 2018 PHS) and the effort we spent in 2020 to save it from delisting then. I'm trying to dig up dirt for Willa on news sources to do a big update there considering it's been years. I would appreciate it if you could tackle the academic literature portion for these at least. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima ( submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. Mergers

Would you mind merging some of the articles that were redirected here? I didn't intend for them all to just redirected when I tagged them as being merged. Noah, AA Talk 19:16, 22 February 2024 (UTC) reply

This de-listed good article would be a good candidate for A-class demotion. It never really underwent a formal A-class review. Just a GAR review that turned into an on-the-spot promotion. Just passing along since you're active in the topic area. Best, Schierbecker ( talk) 04:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC) reply

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV ( submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Awards

Could you please roughly calculate your total points for the awards scheme sometime (no rush on it)? I would like to get it fine tuned so that way it could eventually be launched once the templates are done for userpages. Noah, AA Talk 14:30, 4 March 2024 (UTC) reply
