Please help. I can't log in. My user page seems intact. You can reply there if you prefer. I could probably create a new account, but I'd like to keep my name and edits, and the info on my userpage. I typed you a long message, and managed to delete it, so this time, I'm posting it in stages.

The error message now reads: "Incorrect password or confirmation code entered. Please try again." I believe it was longer yesterday, but ...

I'm sure the browser info is here somewhere:

I'm now fairly sure that cookies are enabled. It's been months since I logged in: March, I think, and I may have changed my password to strengthen it. In that case, I think I'm in trouble. I seem to remember reading on one of the pages that WP doesn't recover passwords.

NOW I'm getting the message I saw yesterday:

"There was an unexpected error logging in. Please try again. If the problem persists, it may be because you have cookies disabled, and you should check that they are enabled in your browser settings."

Should it tell me something when I get different messages on different log-in attempts?

Your account has email enabled. If you can still receive mails at the stored address then you can request a new password at Special:PasswordReset. The old password will continue to work. I have Windows and four browsers but not Safari. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Safari/3.0/en/9277.html may help if it's really a cookie problem. Can you try logging in from another browser or computer? If it works elsewhere then it sounds more likely to be a cookie problem in your browser as the most frequent message says. Well, I'm finally logged on! I have been trying to log on for MONTHS! Some of you may have figured out that I was doing my editing while not logged in. I've been using a handheld device with a Safari browser, and I'm still not sure what the problem was (I had forgotten my password, to complicate matters). I may only be able to log on at the library for a while, but the strangest thing is that I can log on to Species.Wikimedia, Wiktionary, and Commons on the handheld, but not onto enWikipedia. I will attempt to load another browser on the handheld (Huawei M860), if support says it's possible. I'm reading in the news that some of the Safari browsers reject cookies by default. I have changed the settings numerous times to "accept," but the way it jumps when I try to log on, not letting me input the password sometimes at all, or not letting me hit "submit" before leaving the page, makes me suspect a software or hardware problem in·compatibility. Anyway, I'm not gone, just inhibited. I'll figure it out.

Thank you for your help, here, and at the Help Desk. I suspect that back last year, when I changed my password, I started the process of changing email address, but never acknowledged the confirmation email at the "new" email box, probably because I lost access about that time. I found the "confirm" link, but it was a year old, and I think they're only good for a week or so. I requested a password link several times, butI never received a link at either box until I requested one from another project, so I guess I kind slipped in the back door. Once I changed my password on another Wikiproject, with universal login, it eventually changed here as well. Maybe a strategy for someone else, if the same convoluted situation arises.

When I received an email from another wikiproject, I immediately made contact and requested password assistance. I can now log on everywhere except enWP, where I still receive "unexpected login error encountered..." OrangeMike linked me to the RefDesk/Computing, where I'm leaving all the particulars. Cookies are definitely enabled, but I still suspect the browser.

Am I seeing this right that you are creating the history by hand? I'm asking since I'd have a bot ready that could take over that task. It only took five minutes to write so no worries if you'd rather keep doing it yourself. :)

I do it by hand in 1 minute each day. I have considered asking for a bot. If you can reliably run it every day then you are welcome to take over. Unlike normal archive tasks, it has to be every day. Right, I noticed the "A few dates are missing" which in part prompted me to ask. It will be as reliable as the server it's running on, which means it /should/ never be down. That's a good point though, I can set up a bot on a second server supervising the task, to raise an alarm in case. :)

I don't know what you mean by "something random". Are you referring to the link in the upper right corner saying "Karte mit allen Koordinaten: OSM, Google oder Bing"? My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. (2) No, you're right I wasn't clear with the note left at those 6 talk pages, but if editors follow the relevant link I gave to first mention they'll hopefully see the example used is François Mitterrand. I deliberately didn't give Lead Foreign cyrillic example of Chernivtsi Oblast (Ukrainian: Чернівецька область, Chernivets’ka oblast’) because these aren't non-Latin name BLPs. Although maybe I should have to show that MOS addresses both Latin-alphabet and non-Latin.

I don't think a shortcut is needed for that section and I'm not fond of WP:FIRSTMENTION for a page only about biographies (although it already has WP:OPENPARAGRAPH). I am considering using an example of a game on the article in title here, and feel that rather than trying to select a specific noteworthy game in human play a game simply of WZebra, a freeware program of quite high quality (I have no association with its author, if that is of any import for a freeware program), playing itself might permit the most ideal discussion. Do you see where I might expect serious objections to this idea? I should 'be myself' tomorrow at the college library. Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what you want to do. Do you want to add all moves of a software-played Reversi game to the article Reversi, and then discuss the moves made by the software? Well, the primary ideas involved were to illustrate A) Both of the two acceptable means of recording games and B) In a clear way why/how computer Reversi/Othello play is relatively stronger versus humans than is generally (or has been, at least) the case for games; but there was the intention of lightly connecting the specific game to each of the sub-sections in Strategic Elements. Is the objection that you have or believe others would have that the game would be generated by software (and so might be construed as promoting author or some version not available for free)? I also intend to include an old quote by a former tournament player of some note to the effect that the game essentially lacks a middlegame (disputable, but with some sense at the highest level of play), along with remarks that a 10x10 version is available and would almost certainly be needed if the game were of the order of popularity of chess. An illustrative game--either from a human world championship game or per my idea--could serve an auxiliary role for the (intended to be brief) discussion of this particular matter. The intention generally is not to provide a full accounting for people who want to be proficient in the game--something that arguably is being done to a fair degree with chess opening articles here--but basically just to make the subject relatively clearer and a bit more complete (by virtue of increased clarity and also in other ways). It sounds like original research to me if you base an article on your own run of a program and you draw conclusions from the actions of the program. I don't know whether you have access to reliable published sources about Reversi games but that would be better. You might make up individual positions or take it from a software game to illustrate a published point about positions similar to that, but a whole game seems like too much for me. Well, I am not in a rush to do whatever it is I had in mind. It is probably not all that important--or would not be--to 99% of people who would want to know the material to be able to find it here. I don't think what I was planning to do was OR, formally. I may not have been too clear on that. I had no plans to draw conclusions from the run, just to illustrate conclusions already out there, to the extent that part was to be about the specific game rather than mere illustration of any old game with its notation. I do have article material, plenty. Just nothing terribly recent at home, and I did not want to relatively over-focus on any one or two people's play (though the quote I wish to use is, of course, by a person). I don't know the purpose of existence of Computer Othello, to be frank. I believe that was started by somebody wanting to make a sale. Anything on artificial intelligence focused on Othello/Reversi does not need to be said in an article on it. What is there to say other than it is easy to start research on it and it is/was popular to do, as opposed to games with more complicated rule-sets? I don't know (and perhaps I am wrong). Hi, Jens. I just familiarized myself with this term/concept (that I had heard of previously) through Dario Alperin's website. Noting that there is no article here, I wanted your opinion as to notability before contemplating adding one. Thanks. Also, if you have run across any restrictions or generalizations, I would be interested (regardless of wikipedia notability). They appear to fail 1 and 2 at Wikipedia:Notability (numbers)#Notability of sequences of numbers so an article might be nominated for deletion. A search on "brilliant numbers" at OEIS or Prime Curios! gives many related sequences and results. It's easy to be brilliant in many bases when the prime factors are closely together. The square of a prime is brilliant in all bases. One of my interests for sequences is terms as closely together as possible, excluding abnormal cases like the four even brilliant numbers. OEIS:A083284 is brilliant "twins" (n, n+2). A quick search shows that 9472781 starts a brilliant quadruplet n + {0, 2, 6, 8}. PrimeHunter ( talk) 13:49, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

The scarcity remark I made was so wrong because I was thinking not of brilliant numbers but of semiprimes with factor-lengths differing by 1. If you do a Google search and cite several sources, including more than one OEIS sequence and at least one Prime Curios entry, then I guess an article would have above 50% chance of staying. Editors tend to require less notability for math than some other topics. I wouldn't say delete if I saw a deletion nomination but I would have to see the article before saying whether I would abstain or say keep. PrimeHunter ( talk) 16:25, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

I have noted that the coiner of the term brilliant number is actually Danish, but so far have not established his own notability beyond this. I am a little unclear on how I should represent him in my article beyond 'a man named Peter Wallrodt', so if you could provide an appropriate modifying phrase I might use for his activities (his employer, general line of work or notable activity area of any sort--as publicly available), it might be very helpful (My language proficiency does not extend much further than English at present, unfortunately). Also, it would be a good thing for wikipedia to provide an option to move an article in creation to the sandbox for editors. On occasion, this might be useful in not creating a frustrated editor who has found that he or she does not have time to create a finished work (I expect to have the article done well enough soon, but it is causing a minor fear I will have wasted some effort). I don't know anything about Peter Wallrodt but Wallrodt is not a Danish name. A search found a German Peter Wallrodt at http://www.nachhilfe-gruenstadt.de/html/unser_team.html but I haven't confirmed it's him. If you saw a .de language code then that's Germany (Deutschland). .dk is Denmark. 'a man named Peter Wallrodt' sounds odd. Peter is a common male name. You can just say 'Peter Wallrodt'. I'm not sure what your move concern is but see Wikipedia:Moving a page. You can work on a draft in a user subpage, for example User:Julzes/sandbox which should be linked on "My sandbox" at the top of all pages, or User:Julzes/Brilliant number. You can also use {{subst:AFC submission/draftnew}} at top of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Brilliant number to say it's a draft and should not be reviewed yet. I guess you got to Wikipedia:Article wizard/Ready for submission and chose "Create submission for review" instead of "Create new article draft". The latter starts the page with {{subst:AFC submission/draftnew}}. The text of a declined AFC submission is not deleted unless there are serious issues like copyright violation, vandalism or defamation. Firstly, I really appreciated your help at the Help page. Thanks so much. However, I wonder if I may bother you for some technical advice. May I? Hope so.

All the skins I have tried (including Chic) are problematic: they all make my pages appear very cluttered (excepting Chic, which has the problem of garbling some of the text, due to, I think, the typeface it uses. That is, it smushes text together in odd places, thus displaying words with the letters all on top of eachother). But I don't want to ask you about Chic: I wonder if you know how I can go back to MySkin, which worked perfectly well up until about 3 days ago, when all of a sudden all of my red links turned to blue. Can adding something from the page you suggested I read ( Wikipedia:Link color) to my User:Hamamelis/myskin.css change them back to red? The Wikipedia:Link color page was very confusing for me, as I am not very computer literate, and this page seems to assume a lot of pre-knowledge about computer language. I am willing to try to learn how to do it, if you are willing to try to teach me (at least enough to fix this). I did try clearing my cache, and logging on and off, first, before changing the skin. I also tried to edit User:Hamamelis/vector.css and User:Hamamelis/myskin.css (only showing previews - no saving) and the text from Wikipedia:Link color just looked like, well, text. Obviously I am missing something.

The other thing I wonder is, why'd this happen in the first place!? Why did it all of a sudden change like that on its own?? Am I the only one this has happened to? I don't assume you would know, but maybe you have some insights that I don't have. I can't find an example (doing searches on Wikipedia) of anyone else having this problem.

Don't mean to be a pest. If you don't have the answers, that's alright. I just find this all so disconcerting. I am left with just asking 'Why'?

I don't know whether it's a recent change but I also see blue links as default for non-existing pages in MySkin. I have posted to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Redlinks are blue in MySkin under Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#1.20wmf1 deployment complete (deployed 3 days ago). The issue hasn't been reported before but MySkin has few users. The links became red after I saved this line from Wikipedia:Link color in User:PrimeHunter/myskin.css:

.mw-body a:link.new { color: #FF0000; } /* new links */

Well, I kind of like the red-link's new color - like pinkish-orange flourescent Play-Doh (a color I remember well, but, sad to say, is unrepresented at the current article here). Regarding visited red-links and visited created articles, I'm getting the same thing. I will experiment with it and see what I can find. But that is much less of an issue for my uses: I add lists of already-created plant species articles to my watch list, and when I save it, it always shows both the article name, and its corresponding talk page; when a talk page is a red-link, I know that it still needs one. By this process I have added hundreds of talk pages, in which case they are now more visible to plants editors who otherwise may have overlooked them for who-knows-how long. Unless it is a defect unique to the computer I am on, the Championship table in this article is appearing in the wrong place. From a superficial look at how it is edited, it looks as though it should be in the right place, but I have it (aside from the asterisk on the Monte Carlo tournament) all immediately following 'External Links'. It should be an easy fix (I think), but I don't know what is wrong with the coding/writing (and perhaps it is just something wrong on this end). As a result of some email exchanges via OTRS, I ended up making an edit to Software license to add a reference. The question I received is whether that link is a "no-follow" link. I have only the vaguest notion of what this means, and my quick search turned up nothing helpful. Yes, all external links in Wikipedia are nofollow. See meta:nofollow and nofollow. Specifically, the html of the rendered article says <a class="external text" href="https://www.softwareresearches.net/">"Software Licensing"</a>. nofollow means that the link does not contribute to the PageRank of the target in Google, and similar ranking systems in some other search engines. This means that the target does not get higher placement in Google search result pages. Many webmasters, especially at commercial sites, care greatly about their page rank and search engine placement because it affects how many visitors they get. Google may still follow a nofollow link to discover and index the target page if it wasn't already in their database. If you have any thoughts on an appropriate way of connecting the idea behind RSA Challenge and the unique 2-digit home prime problem (about 49 and 77) by adding links to other articles; I know this is not exactly an editing issue directly, with all that needs to be done here and the relative insignificance of the problem, but perhaps there is some natural way to improve the article that could increase the power devoted to it somehow indirectly. Twice now somebody has tried to put how-to like programming material in the article. I can understand this in a way; because, while wikipedia is a general encyclopedia, there is no broad cooperative working on a problem that looks like it might bear one, and this may be a frustration to a devotee of the problem (which I am not). As always, if implementing an idea you have which I have requested requires much time, I cannot ask you to spend the time and will merely use your suggestion when I myself have time. Thanks. I read my experience in trying to rectify something in the lede to this article as edit warring. Please let me know if you do not have time to take this up or if you agree with the person I regard as at fault. There is a sentence in the original lede that I have been trying to modestly correct almost wholly by moving material from the 2nd to the 1st paragraph. Most recently, I have pointed out that by the reverter's logic on WP:OR not only must my sentence go but so also should the sentence it is meant to correct. Now, he may have a good argument on this, but he began this by reverting without reading discussion, and then argued I have to convince him and him alone because it was a feature article. My question is why should 2 be eliminate from it and not considering a more extended range for this conjecture - any odd number greater or equal to 7 is the sum of three primes ? Good to hear it worked. The prefilled username in the email box must be a feature in your browser. Maybe it remembers you entered the username in the login screen and suggests the same content for other boxes at the same site. There have been discussions about detail level in tennis biographies at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tennis, but no agreement. Some previous Wozniacki years have actually already been pruned. I am trying to understand Special:PasswordReset. If I enter the username, then a message is sent to the e-mail associated with that username. If the E-mail address: address is filled in, then a message is sent to the e-mail address only if the e-mail address is associated with a username; otherwise no message is sent. Yes, that is my experience from testing (I don't have knowledge about the actual code). If both fields are filled then the e-mail address is ignored. If only the e-mail address is filled then the sent e-mail lists all accounts with that address, and gives a separate password for each. If no user has that e-mail address then no mail is sent, but MediaWiki falsely gives the same message: "A reminder e-mail has been sent." I guess the idea is that third parties should not be able to tell whether an e-mail address exists in the database. PrimeHunter ( talk) 13:50, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

I don't think {{ Quotation}} is suitable. The email address can be set and changed at any time, not just at account creation. The form can sometimes help even if you forgot your username or email address (you can check all your email addresses, and some people can se all email to their domain without specifying the part before @). I had overlooked MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext, maybe because it's displayed around where the tagline usually is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset?uselang=qqx. If we make a detailed message then I think it should be MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext which comes before the form box and not MediaWiki:Passwordreset-text which is inside the box. If the latter is kept then how about:

Use the below form to receive an e-mail with a temporary password for your account. You must have registered an e-mail address for the account when it was created, or at Special:Preferences when you were logged in. If you can no longer receive e-mail at the registered e-mail address then this form will not help you. Please see Help:Logging in. "(passwordreset-pretext: 2)" at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset?uselang=qqx and the default {{PLURAL:$1||Enter one of the pieces of data below}} at MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext indicates to me that MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext might have been called with parameter "1" to indicate there is only one field in the form. If it can change back to 1 (presumably the username) then we should maybe use PLURAL to choose between two messages at MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext. PrimeHunter, thanks again for your help yesterday. I have another question, if you don't mind. I was thinking about creating two templates to mark the beginning and the end of the section to be transcluded that would correspondingly enclose "<onlyinclude>{{#ifeq:{{{transcludesection|sectionname}}}|sectionname|" and "}}</onlyinclude>". This way instead of writing all this someone could just put something similar to {{Section begin|sectionname}} and {{Section end}} around the section he or she wants to mark for transclusion. It shouldn't be necessary to revert. The pages beginning MediaWiki:Gadget- which have neither .css nor .js extension are displayed at Preferences → Gadgets. They are processed as regular Wikitext, so removing one unlinked word and altering the capitalisation of another unlinked word should alter just one thing - the summary shown at Preferences → Gadgets. -- Redrose64 ( talk) 20:02, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Prime. I'm Gtwfan52, and I have a concern about the way you replied to the fella that asked about common knowledge at Teahouse. We try to be completely positive when we respond to the new users that have questions at Teahouse and your reply was somewhat chastising. I'm sorry you feel that his asking the same question in multiple forums is somehow a problem, but I can certainly see the logic in it. Very few things about Wikipedia have a cut and dried "Answer", so by asking in multiple places, he got multiple viewpoints and from that can synthesize a reasonable way to approach his problem that he was asking about. At Teahouse, we assume the editor asking the question is new, and we try to encourage with our answers. He is, after all, a volunteer just like me and you and does not have to be here. We assume that we need him and all new editors. Just remember, his rate of pay is exactly the same as yours. So, although I thank you for your interest, I am asking you to be positive if you are going to answer questions at Teahouse and make sure that you greet the editor when you do. By asking the same question in four different places without saying so at any of them, he makes many people spend their time on the same thing. It seems fairly common sense and courtesy to me not to do that, except maybe if you have waited a reasonable time without getting answers. I first saw the question at Wikipedia:Help desk#"Common Knowledge" Citations which had the most detailed answers. I linked it from the three other places for the benefit of editors potentially wasting time on an already answered question.
