Problem when I edited page on T. E. Lawrence

Hello, I added 2 movies on the page in the "In Popular Culture" section... a 1992 TV movie and a 2021 movie. I got an error message that I was trying to add images, which I didn't do. I published my changes and, as a result, many pre-existing images are no longer displaying. Claudemlalande ( talk) 02:06, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply

@ Claudemlalande: Hi there! Looks like your edit changed the punctuation in the image file names (e.g. Te lawrence.jpg to Te lawrence‧jpg). I reverted your edit to restore the images. When you redo the edit, please don't add external links (especially to IMDb) in the article. Happy editing! GoingBatty ( talk) 02:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply
@ Claudemlalande: This shows your edit which changed many periods in file names to the Unicode character U+2027 HYPHENATION POINT. Did you copy the text to another program like a word processor and copy it back before saving? Some programs can make automatic unwanted changes. A text editor (e.g. Notepad) is safer than a word processor (e.g. Word). PrimeHunter ( talk) 23:52, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply

How do i change the Alphabetical order of Sub-categories in a category page?

The page Category:Ethnic groups in Afghanistan by province is solely made up of sub-categories, two of these sub-categories are Category:Ethnic groups in Kabul Province‎ and Category:Ethnic groups in Parwan Province‎ which are made by me. Problem is you can see the other categories have a normal Alphabetical order, while the two that I made are listed under the letter "E" despite the fact that every single sub-category there starts with E. I want the two categories to be like the others and be ordered by the name of the province, letters K and P. RevolutionaryPatriot ( talk) 06:52, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply

@ RevolutionaryPatriot: You do this by adding a "sort key" to the category page, on the line that sets the parent category name. For example, in the page Category:Ethnic groups in Urozgan Province there's the line [[Category:Ethnic groups in Afghanistan by province|Uruzgan Province]], which arranges for the category to appear under the "U" heading. Error in Spelling

The confusing terms brought me here. I'm here to report a spelling error on this page. ( Nazareth) The second line says jargest instead of largest. I'm unaware if this is the place to report this but I can't understand specific term in which place to go for this. Greencryer ( talk) 14:59, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Hello, Greencryer. Thank you for pointing this out, but I cannot find that the article Nazareth has ever contained the word "jargest" instead of "largest", so I'm puzzled what you were looking at and on what device.
In general, if you do find a spelling error, in most cases you can correct it (but make sure it isn't just an alternative spelling in a different variety of English - see ENGVAR). However, Nazareth is protected against newer editors being able to change it (see the padlock symbol at the top), so the correct thing to do here would be to raise an edit request on its talk page - see the edit request wizard.
However, as I say, I cannot see such an error now or in the history of the article. ColinFine ( talk) 15:17, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Right, it correctly says "largest" with l (el), not "jargest" with j (jay). @ Greencryer: Maybe your screen has a defect or smudge in that place. If it still appears to say "jargest" after scrolling and you really are talking about /info/en/?search=Nazareth then maybe you have a browser extension which changes text although it would be an odd change. PrimeHunter ( talk) 17:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply
@ Greencryer: I searched all articles for "jargest", and found one article that was using "Jargest" as a surname. It was a typo, so I fixed it. GoingBatty ( talk) 22:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC) reply

How does one cite a lack of a webpage

I am currently trying to clean up IBM Rational Rose, but many references to it are no longer valid. Additionally, since those links were added, the software has been taken off the market. The only "proof" of that, however, is that there is no proof (i.e. all market/storefront pages have been removed from the internet). Would it be advisable to cite a source for its removal, and if so, how would one do that? (For example, adding a reference to a search engine and its lack of content?) Thanks, Alpha2 5232 ( talk) 00:28, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

"No longer valid" is not the same thing as no long accessible; the latter you just tag with the dead link template. Clarityfiend ( talk) 10:51, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Well, not only are they no longer accessible, but the problem is that their existence used to prove that it is on the market. Without the links, one can reasonably assume that the product is no longer for sale. My question is not "How to deal with dead links", but "how can one cite those dead links as evidence that the product no longer exists". Alpha2 5232 ( talk) 11:12, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

    Current affairs on WP

I need some clarification on news in WP articles. A few years ago I was advised that WP is not a news outlet, after I mentioned an event in a particular article, but now I see an article on 2024 Bondi Junction stabbings. So when is a current affairs event a valid item and when is it not? Sardaka ( talk) 10:29, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Hi Sardaka. The primary guideline to determine whether an event is suitable for a Wikipedia article is Wikipedia:Notability (events). As it says in the nutshell, An event is presumed to be notable if it has lasting major consequences or affects a major geographical scope, or receives significant non-routine coverage that persists over a period of time. Coverage should be in multiple reliable sources with national or global scope. Alpha3031 ( tc) 10:36, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
@ Sardaka Wikipedia's mainpage has a section for "In the news", which often does a better job of informing readers than any one newspaper or broadcaster would do. That's because we wait until other published sources report on a topic and only then create the article here. Also, as our editors are from all around the world, we tend to have a broader perspective than any individual source and we should write neutrally. Hence I find that, a few days after any event, Wikipedia is an excellent place to read about something. Mike Turnbull ( talk) 15:25, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
@ Sardaka, one of the reasons Wikipedia avoids calling itself a news outlet/source is that it does not cover current events comprehensively. It cannot do this because all material is contributed only by volunteers, so there is no 'staff' tasked with the responsibility of ensuring comprehensive coverage.
If it did so label itself, people could complain (rightly) that it was not covering event X or Y, and was therefore biased. See Wikipedia:NOTNEWS. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 151.227.134.31 ( talk) 16:30, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

County of UK birthplace for people born before boundary changes

I'm aware that UK counties are a contentious issue. An anon user and I are in danger of edit-warring over the birthplace of Kevin Rowland, who was born in Wednesfield in 1953. At that time, Wednesfield was officially in Staffordshire but it's currently in the City of Wolverhampton. Which should be quoted in the lede and infobox? I tried MOS:BIRTHPLACE but there was no guidance. I imagine this crops up a lot but I couldn't find a definitive guideline anywhere. I don't have much time for county traditionalists so if only one polity is quoted I think it should be the current one, but I can see the justification for formations like "Wednesfield, Wolverhampton (then Staffordshire)" or "Wednesfield, Staffordshire (now Wolverhampton)". Dave.Dunford ( talk) 15:17, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

I've implemented your second suggestion. One of the two is the only way forward, and I would suggest that the county at the time of birth is the one to mention about hist birth, followed by the current one to help our readers find it. Given the way governments have been reorganising counties over the last few decades, it does make for an easier change when they decide to carve up Wolverhampton! Thank you. Sensible compromise. Let's hope the anon IP accepts it. Dave.Dunford ( talk) 16:34, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
As a broader rule of thumb, what a place was called on the date of their birth has to come first. I get this with American immigrants all the time: "Friedrik Veeblefetzer was born in Glauschreik, Silesia, Kingdom of Prussia (now Gliŝrik, Poland)" is the way it's usually done. "The current one" is a form of recentism, ignoring the context within which the subject lived their life. -- Orange Mike | Talk 16:56, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
@ Dave.Dunford: Another alternative is to add a little more detail, as I did at Rowland Hill Berkeley. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:27, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Template:Infobox person has quite a lot to say about this, although specifically relating to infoboxes. The 2 most relevant sentences seem to be "Use the name of the birthplace at the time of birth, e.g.: Saigon (prior to 1976) or Ho Chi Minh City (post-1976)." and "What the place may correspond to on a modern map is a matter for an article's main text." - Arjayay ( talk) 20:35, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

I don't have any user scripts that I know of unless Adblock Plus is one. I'm on Vector Legacy 2010 if that helps. Reloading the page multiple times and leaving and returning to it has done nothing. What I see is along the lines of "These sets $ F_{i} $ are the Fatou domains of $ f(z) $, and their union is the Fatou set $ \operatorname {F} (f) $ of $ f(z) $. Each of the Fatou domains contains at least one critical point of $ f(z) $, that is, a (finite) point z satisfying $ f'(z)=0 $, or $ f(z)=\infty $ if the degree of the numerator $ p(z) $ is at least two larger than the degree of the denominator $ q(z) $, or if $ f(z)=1/g(z)+c $ for some c and a rational function $ g(z) $ satisfying this condition." PLMMJ ( talk) 22:05, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply
It's also broken on other pages, including Mandelbrot set ("...whether the sequence $ f_{c}(0),f_{c}(f_{c}(0)),\dotsc $ goes to infinity. Treating the real and imaginary parts of $ c $ as image coordinates on the complex plane, pixels may then be colored according to how soon the sequence $ |f_{c}(0)|,|f_{c}(f_{c}(0))|,\dotsc $ crosses an arbitrarily chosen threshold...") and Pi ("For example, one may directly compute the arc length of the top half of the unit circle, given in Cartesian coordinates by the equation $ {\textstyle x^{2}+y^{2}=1} $, as the integral:
    $ {\displaystyle \pi =\int _{-1}^{1}{\frac {dx}{\sqrt {1-x^{2}}}}.} $
An integral such as this was adopted as the definition of π by Karl Weierstrass, who defined it directly as an integral in 1841.") Some symbols are showing, like the F for function and the symbol for Pi, but only outside of math sections. I should have put that in the other comment. PLMMJ ( talk) 22:10, 14 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Before WWI (I have read), Hitler wore a much wider ('handlebar') moustache, but trimmed it to the more familiar style in order to fit inside a gas mask.
A moustache wearer myself, I would remind people that moustaches do not retain a fixed shape and size by themselves, but instead grow and have to be regularly trimmed. They also grow in patterns that are not necessarily ideal for the shape the wearer may most desire. Doubtless over the years Hitler's moustache varied a little in exactly how it was trimmed. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 151.227.134.31 ( talk) 19:26, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Also, you have just suggested you are Ozzie, in which case this is your biography and you should carefully read our autobiography guideline which suggests that you are not the best person to write such an article owing to your conflict of interest. I'm afraid that, like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. That article was not "your account" or "your page", it was Wikipedia's article about you, and it was highly undesirable that it be written by you or your associate.
A Wikipedia article about you, whoever writes it, should be a neutrally written summary of what people wholly unconnected with you, and not prompted or fed information on your behalf, have chosen to publish about you. You do not control its contents, and what you or your associates say or want to say is of little relevance. Your involvement in it, once it has been written, should be limited to making suggestions, which uninvolved editors will make the decision on. Please see an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. ColinFine ( talk) 15:22, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Acting4u, this thing has now been resuscitated as Draft:Ozzie Devrish. It has little text, but this currently includes (after markup-stripping): His fame came with an Australian TV series The Strip, following feature films such as Peter Pan, Chronicles of Narnia, The Condemned and many more prestigious productions that has enjoyed critical acclaim and international visibility. He demands the attention of elite casting directors in Hollywood and around the globe. This is promotional drivel. Article about a terrorist

A terrorist has recently been active online after 10 years. He has become more silent and giving indirect provocations to violence online. Ten years ago he was recruited by UK based IS group. So as a precautionary measure I created an article which got deleted under A7. (There were citations from three independent news websites. There were few sentences initially.)

What to do in such cases? How can I store (authentic, cited) information about terrorists here on WikiPedia for future reference? Please advise. Kawrno Baba ( talk) 15:26, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply

This is not a place to merely store information. This is an encyclopedia. This isn't a place to merely tell the world about alleged terrorists. Please see MOS:TERRORIST. "Terrorist" is a highly charged word and should not be tossed around lightly. Also see WP:BLP. 331dot ( talk) 15:31, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Contributing corrections or additional information, easily verified

I have attempted to contribute additional information (easily verifiable) to Wiki's articles, but have much luck. The three items I attempted to enhance previously were correct, but not accepted. I mistakenly submitted two as 'original research' when I could have cited articles in print, which I am willing to do. Now: I have additional information on the Bio of actor Seamon Glass re; three television performances he acted in (Perry Mason Show) and part of his teaching career, mid-fifties working for my father in Modoc Co. California -- where he also helped write some local history curriculum text books. What do I do? I've contributed what I can in money to Wikipedia; hope to send more. @ Wick Humble: Hi there! I suggest reviewing Help:Introduction, which shows how to edit and provide independent published reliable sources. You can also post your suggestions on the article's talk page, Talk:Seamon Glass, and ask for others to update the article for you. Happy editing! GoingBatty ( talk) 17:32, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Hello, Wick Humble, and thank you for your contributions.
To get the finance out of the way first: your contributions are welcome (though some point out that the Wikimedia Foundation is not in need of funds at present), but has no connection whatever with editing. Nobody editing Wikipedia sees anything at all of what may or may not come in as financial contributions (and it is important that that is so).
As for your editing contributions: they all seem to have been several years ago, and the first one, to Chevrolet big-block engine, was not reverted as far as I can see. The second was removed as original research - you stated something without providing a reference for it. The third was removed a couple of weeks later as part of a "clean up selected filmography and removing non-noteworthy entries".
The thing is, this is how Wikipedia works. We all have our opinions of what should and shouldn't be in an article. Sometimes these are uncontroversial; sometimes people will disagree, and the way it works is called the bold, revert, discuss cycle: somebody boldly makes a change, somebody else disagrees and reverts it, and then they discuss the matter to reach consensus. Your second edit was contrary to policy, as it did not include a source. The third was less clear, and it came down to a difference of opinion.
For making edits to the article about Glass, you could be bold and insert the information, and see if somebody disagrees that it is appropriate and reverts you; or you could do as GoingBatty suggests, and start with a discussion on the talk page. But either way, you must be able to cite a reliably published source: your own knowledge is not enough. ColinFine ( talk) 17:46, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply

@ Zoglophie: Please name pages you want help with. I assume it's about 1965 Asian Badminton Championships and you want to use {{ Medals table}}. The flag_template parameter can be used for some events but there is no support for the Asian Badminton Championships. The only way I can find if {{ Medals table}} is used is to change the output with a string function. It's not pretty, it's hard to edit with VisualEditor, and it may fail later if the involved file names change, but this works now to replace File:Flag of Hong Kong.svg with File:Flag of Hong Kong 1959.svg:
    {{MultiReplace
    |plain=yes
    |1={{Medals table
     | caption =
     | host = IND
     | flag_template = flagcountry
     | event =
     | team =
     | gold_HKG = 1 | silver_HKG = 1 | bronze_HKG = 3
    }}
    |2=Flag of Hong Kong
    |3=Flag of Hong Kong 1959
    }}

      *   Host nation ( India)

    RankNationGoldSilverBronzeTotal
    1  Hong Kong1135
    Totals (1 entries)1135
Other replacements can be made with 4=...|5=..., and so on. You have to identify the file names first, or try guessing. PrimeHunter ( talk) 20:40, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply

    How to revert title change?

How do I revert a title change? The article titled " Horatio Caine" in existence since 2006 was recently retitled " H. Caine" with no sensible explanation. A redirect page was also created. I can edit articles, but I don't know how to edit titles or how to properly revert/delete redirects. Can you help? Jaguar766 ( talk) 21:24, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply

You can go to the right side of your screen (or top right tools bar, depending on your setting) and click move, entering in the title. This won't work unless you have no redirect, so instead you would need to revert the move. To revert a page move previously done, find the move log entry (you can find this by going to Special:Log, clicking the drop-down menu and clicking "Move log" when you find it, they are in alphabetical order), enter in the page's name in the "Target" field, and there should be a revert button when you find the move. Click it, enter your reason, and click "Move page", and it will be reverted. I believe this is the process, but I could be wrong. -- ThatOneWolf ( Chat Edits 22:30, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Okay, I found the "revert" button on the "Move log", but I don't want to swap it back until I delete the redirect because it states "The old title will become a redirect page to the new title." If "Horatio Caine" redirects to "H. Caine" and is not deleted and "H. Caine" redirects to "Horatio Caine" after the move, the two will cancel each other and could end up in a cycle to nowhere. Or does the "revert" button on the "Move log" also automatically delete the "Horatio Caine" to "H. Caine" redirect? Is there a way to delete the "Horatio Caine" to "H. Caine" redirect first? I don't want to mess things up. Jaguar766 ( talk) 23:58, 15 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Looking at the move done on the page you are talking about, I find valid reason for the move. The person who moved it said that it was moved because H. Caine is the name of the character, and is referred to as that rather than the common name. You can look at the reason in the page's history for a better understanding, but I feel a revert would be unnecessary, although I could be misunderstanding. -- ThatOneWolf ( Chat Edits 00:10, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
You obviously never watched the show. The character's name is "Horatio Caine". He was sometimes called "H" as a nickname, one syllable is easier than four, but only sometimes. Jaguar766 ( talk) 01:06, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
But, in case you want me to answer your question for future moves, I think you would have to ask someone else who has more experience than me. I haven't been around too long compared to others, and I'm not completely sure if doing that would mess things up, but I do believe that it wouldn't, again though, don't hold me to it. -- ThatOneWolf ( Chat Edits 00:12, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Okay, where would I ask someone else how to delete a redirect? Would the Teahouse be appropriate? Jaguar766 ( talk) 01:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Hello, Jaguar766. To move a page when you can't do it yourself (eg over a redirect, or for a user too new to have access to the Move function), you can raise a request for a "technical move" at requested moves.
However, it is clear from ThatOneWolf's reply above that this is not an uncontested move, so you should get consensus on the article's talk page before requesting it be moved back. ColinFine ( talk) 09:34, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply

    April 16 Information

Hi, a user recently edited this page by removing "Italian-American cuisine" and adding "Italian cuisine" ( [1]; without adequate explanation), after many years that "Italian-American cuisine" was present on this page; I would like to hear other opinions. I'm familiar with this dish, and the way it has evolved it's no longer part of Italian cuisine, yet today in this encyclopaedia it has automatically become Italian (there is no dish called "fettuccine Alfredo" in Italy, we have "pasta al burro", but it's a bit different); what we do in this situation? JacktheBrown ( talk) 02:12, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply

@ JackkBrown: There is already discussion of this on the article's talk page. If you and the other editor can't reach consensus through that discussion, try WP:DR. RudolfRed ( talk) 03:26, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Despite what JackkBrown says, the dish was created in Rome by Alfredo Di Lelio at the restaurant Alfredo alla Scrofa over 100 years ago, and so it is an Italian dish even if it is now more popular in the United States than in Italy. Every dish has its variations and certainly the contemporary American versions are different in the sense that cream is used in the sauce in addition to butter and parmesan cheese. That does not mean that they are two different dishes. They are different versions of the same original dish that was marketed to American tourists in Rome starting in the 1920s. Cullen328 ( talk) 06:45, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
I don't mean to stir the sauce here, however – it may be true that this dish exists on the website of a restaurant in Rome that bills itself as its originator, but what JackkBrown writes is also true: in Italy, there is no such thing as "Fettuccine Alfredo", at least not beyond the front door of the restaurant (or restaurants) trying to cash-in on the "origin" story in order to sell "pasta in bianco" to American tourists for €24 a plate (...only extra €25 with truffles, €50 with caviar, very good, you want Mister? "King of Noodles" indeed). Gambero Rosso has a somewhat tongue in cheek piece which gets to the heart of the matter here, and our friends on Italian Wikipedia summarise it well too (see Diffusione e varianti section). Mostly, picky children and those recovering from illness get "pasta in bianco". -- Cl3phact0 ( talk) 15:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Hi @ Longestview, you should not cite to a Google Drive. Sources should be published and it sounds like those return forms have been sent to you personally by the local election body? That means they are not "published". Instead, you could cite them offline via Template:Cite_document and put the onus on the reader to request the returns if they wanted to check the reference. It doesn't appear that we have an article about that particlar Chris Howard. If you can find the required independent reliably published sources to establish that he meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, (remember, that nothing written, published, commissioned, or based on information directly from him or his associates counts towards this), then there could be an article.
You could add it to requested articles, but to be honest the take-up from there is very little.
It is possible, but not very likely, that the topic might capture somebody's interest and they might write it.
The most likely way for you to get that article included in Wikipedia is by writing it yourself. I need to warn you, though, that creating a new article is one of the most challenging tasks there is for new editors, and people who attempt it before they have spent a few months learning how Wikipedia works by making edits and interacting with other editors usually have a frustrating and disappointing experience.
My advice would be to put Chris Howard aside for a while, read Help:Introduction and begin learning how to be a Wikipedia editor, and when you've got a grasp of some basic ideas (especially notability) read your first article, and come back to it.
One more note: if you are Howard, or are connected with him, then your task is likely to be even more difficult, because your conflict of interest my make it more difficult to write in the required neutral tone. Whatever you do, do not pay anybody to write an article. No paid editors are in any way accredited by Wikipedia, and many of them are scammers. ColinFine ( talk) 17:01, 16 April 2024 (UTC) reply
