My digitizing of the MWL sections for the XT database project has been done from 1964-1971...not far enough for Fifi-Orlene. During this weekend into Monday I'll be adding more TC images for the 1963-1971 period (1965-1966 and 1969-1971 are mostly done). It may take another month or two to finish off the scanning of the 1970s, and scan in the late 1950s and early 1960s, depending upon what lies in the library downstairs. The remainder of the scanning for the earliest period might have to wait until my next NOAA Central Library visit. Thegreatdr ( talk) 21:41, 23 March 2013 (UTC) reply

All this MWL scanning is preparatory work for what is to come. I'm still putting out "feelers" within the meteorological community as to whether other similar databases have already been developed, based on surface maps and surface data. NCEP and ECMWF reanalysis grids are being used as of late to try to develop similar climatologies, but since they're based on grids, they will underestimate central pressures and strength of winds, even if they had all related ship observations. One of the big flaws with the reanalyses is that there is a significant amount of ship observations which have yet to be included into ICOADS, that still lies on the old surface maps or on paper-based ship logs. Hey there. For whatever reason, I took a look at the Tina and Fico articles. Fico has an upside down satellite image...but that's not the main reason for this chat. It's all about John. While John is the longest-lived TC in the northern Pacific, it is not the longest-lived northeast Pacific tropical cyclone (doesn't seem to matter if you use 140W or 180 as a guide longitude). John was east of 140W for nine days, and east of the international dateline for 16 days consecutive, 17 days total, which is close to the amount of time Celeste stayed east of the dateline. I removed the wording about John having this record from the Fico article. Tina still owns that record, spending nearly all its time east of 140W. Thegreatdr ( talk) 17:06, 21 April 2013 (UTC) reply

Earth100, please note that while Hurricanehink is an admin, since he's acting as your mentor, someone else, and that's going to be Bbb23 and I, are going to have to play bad cop. And I have to tell you that your request above is exactly the opposite of what needs to happen. Many mentors run their mentees through a several month long program, all conducted in userspace, before they allow them to edit articles directly; this is especially true for an editor has a had a problem before. You need to do whatever Hh is asking you to do on the mentorship page. Additionally, for the early stages, even if Hh is going to allow you to edit directly, you will need to state exactly what you plan to change, not just request blanket permission to go edit an article. That is, once Hh approves that you're ready to choose your own articles to edit, you're still going to have to do the draft work in a sandbox and then say "This is how I would recommend changing the article." Earth100, I am trying to be blunt here: I consider you pursuing this discussion further to be very, very close, if not already over the line, of violating your unblock conditions. I don't mind that you're asking the questions here, so much, but I do mind that you are asking them, not listening to the answers, and, more importantly, not doing what your mentor is telling you to do. You have an assignment on your mentorship page. Please attend to that first. Please do not starting bringing up edits that you want to start making to articles. This is exactly like training in a skill--let's say, for example, martial arts. If your trainer tells you to practice bowing as the first "skill", you can't go to the trainer and say "Is it okay if I practice sparring instead?" As Qwyrxian has generously included me as a "bad cop", I'm pretty much going echo what he's already said. You must follow Hink's instructions. The best questions you could possibly ask would be about the instructions and about the assignments he's given you. You must stop being so eager to edit articles, regardless of the contemplated edit. I already told you that this is going to require patience on your part. You are fortunate that Hink is willing to work with you, but if you aren't willing to work him and abide by his rules, then you're wasting his time and everyone else's time. So, forget your own agenda completely. Act like nothing else exists except your mentorship program, and just do what the teacher tells you to do. If you can't live with that, then you shouldn't have enrolled in the course. Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members). So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers: Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available". Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form.
