Alert

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have recently shown interest in living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect: any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or any page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

BLP

Hi - I'm not going to give you a templated warning message, but please do consider this a warning. We are cautious with BLPs - sourcing has to be reliable, and rigorous. That Variety article stops short of saying in Variety's voice that the subject of that article was indeed the person in question - they are using a lot of hedging language. At this stage, this is rumour and speculation. It doesn't matter if our article is a bit behind the curve on this - WP:NOTNEWS - we must wait until reliable sources report this stuff with certainty. Adding poorly sourced, potentially controversial material into BLPs can result in your account being blocked from editing. GirthSummit (blether) 17:04, 6 April 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Girth Summit: The Variety article says "Miller then grabs the girl by the throat, and throws her to the ground," in the author's voice. I think there is reason to assume that the journalist has definitively identified the man in the video as Miller. The hedging language is obviously about the physical act that Miller committed, not whether the man in the video is Miller.

FreeEncyclopediaMusic, no. ...the man, whom they identify as Miller...; The seven-second video shows a man saying, ”Oh, you wanna fight? That’s what you wanna do?” to a young woman.... No, that's not good enough. The fact that they refer to 'the man' as Miller in a single sentence, having previously stated that the only reason to think it is Miller is because a bartender told them so, is not nearly enough to support an assertion that would amount to an accusation of criminality in a Wikipedia article. A tag has been placed on Jesse Singal requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jesse Singal. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. February 2022

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Killing of Gabby Petito, without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. There is discussion on the article talk page regarding this controversial move. You did not have consensus to perform this move. Netherzone ( talk) 22:44, 14 February 2022 (UTC) reply

Edit summary

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! KyleJoan talk 02:36, 26 February 2022 (UTC) reply

Overlinking

Hello, common words that everyone understands shouldn't be linked per MOS:OVERLINK -- FMSky ( talk) 12:32, 6 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Addition of unsourced or improperly cited material

It is appropriate to reference an FA to support a belief that "a biographical article about an actor should include all the languages they speak, not just one" and include a language an actor speaks based on that belief. It is inappropriate to add unsourced material. Please don't do this again. KyleJoan talk 01:35, 16 August 2023 (UTC) reply

WP:COMMONSENSE dictates that English be included. You can watch every film and TV show Paul Mescal has appeared in, and he speaks English in all of them. You're being ridiculous and pedantic. But regardless, I've provided a reliable source [1] that states that Mescal speaks English. FreeEncyclopediaMusic ( talk) 01:41, 16 August 2023 (UTC) reply

Wrong again. COMMONSENSE allows you to argue that English should be included. It doesn't guarantee the inclusion of any material, especially after other users have reverted you. Next time, save us all the time and energy by just citing a source the first time rather than keep reverting and arguing. If you believe it's so important to cite COMMONSENSE to add a claim about actors speaking English, why don't you do that in other articles? I'd be curious to see how that fares. KyleJoan talk 01:56, 16 August 2023 (UTC) reply
"COMMONSENSE allows you to argue that English should be included." Indeed. That is the heart of what I'm saying, so I'm right. You are using semantic games to call me "wrong."
"If you believe it's so important to cite COMMONSENSE to add a claim about actors speaking English, why don't you do that in other articles? I'd be curious to see how that fares." I'll definitely give it a try.
