The whole mess at the village pump

The whole thing is a monument to ignorance. I wish people would accept the plain facts that there are millions of articles missing and that a bot would be the easiest course of action. It is wholly supervised and approved so why do we have all this discussion? I would continue dabbing Azerbaijan but with the way this is going, I really don't see much of a point. I'm an Editor of the wiki citation needed 13:46, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I second this. The way that certain "members of the community" (not editors) have approached this proposal is an absolute disgrace. The bot should run anyway—it has been approved and a good majority are supporting it. EJF ( talk) 13:51, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Way it is going? 50 people have shown their strong support. The bot has been approved, I shouldn't worry too much about it, its not the first example of people overreacting. Some people may not like it but either way it will be done. We have to plant seeds for this site to grow so don't let this fracas bother you. I've devoted to much time to this already today, just continue, I'll try to do the same but it is a little off putting I agree. What I fail to understand is why people think wikipedia which strives to be th best referenc epoint on the web should ignore 95% of the world that we live in. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:53, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Okay, then when the bot gets to Azerbaijan we will have to manually add all this. But right now, I will be going through Afghanistan and adding the district names to the articles the bot has already uploaded. But people don't know how much is missing, since they see the article on the town they live in looks pretty decent so they settle down at the AN and, well, you remember my famous quote at Fritzpoll's RFA. "The First rule of Fight Club is. You do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is You DO Not Talk About Fight Club!!! We are the all singing all dancing crap of the world"

Thanks for your encouraging note. I am trying to do a bit at a time while I am on this trip - but family affairs are taking up most of my time at the moment. Yes, it is truly difficult to condense the historical data without making it meaningless or leaving oneself open for a great deal of criticism. While doing my last edit it suddenly occured to me that the way to handle possible criticism of a condensed section might be to give a longer explanation on the Talk page (which I have done). I've also inserted the same note on 'serfdom' on the Tibet page and the People's Liberation Army invasion of Tibet (1950–1951) page. We'll see how this works. Hope you are well and happy. Vancouver is a treat at the moment - sunny weather (!!!!!!!!!!!) and the gardens are absolutely spectacular. Cheers, John Hill ( talk) 17:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

FallingRain

I thought that only the population was unreliable. How do youknow the altitude is the same? I'm an Editor of the wiki citation needed 19:00, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Well of course that could be possible, and with Kushgag it certainly seems plausible. Do you have another reference that contradicts what FallingRain says (since there are many in the population department). I'm an Editor of the wiki citation needed 19:11, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Statistics

I admire the dedication you are putting into the proposal to generate place stubs by bot, and I basically support this. It is just a question of getting the scale right. I noticed you recently suggested that this might only involve adding "thousands" of articles, rather than between 1 and 2 million, as the size of the dataset suggests. If "thousands" means less than 200000 then I would probably support, but I think we need some statistics on city size to make the right decision about the scale.

What would be most useful is a graph of city size by rank, i.e., a graph of the population of a city against its position in a list of all cities by size, starting with the largest. Then we would know, for instance, how many articles we need to have to cover every place with a population of 10000 or more, or every place with a population of 1000 or more...

I did some web research, and it seems that the evidence is that this graph is approximately a log-normal distribution, but I wasn't able to find exactly the data we need. You seem to have some expertise on the information out there. Can you find any such statistics? Geometry guy 19:53, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I replied on my talk page to your response, and looked again at this 2007 article, which is the most reliable source I found with relevant information. The US data suggests that in a population of 304 million:
  • population 100+ requires 20-25000 articles, 1000+ requires 10000 articles, and 10000+ requires 4000 articles.
If this scales linearly with population then worldwide,
  • population 100+ requires 500000 articles, 1000+ requires 200000 articles, and 10000+ requires 80000 articles.
(Actually a factor 20 is a slight underestimate as 20 times 304 million is less than 6.7 billion.) However, the US is one of the most urbanized countries in the world, so the linear scaling is almost certainly inaccurate. This would seem to be consistent with the 1-2 million worldwide dataset. Based on this, I would guess that worldwide
  • population 100+ requires around 1 million articles, 1000+ requires at most 200000 articles, and 10000+ requires maybe 50000 articles.
That suggests to me that using 1000+ population as a first approximation to inclusion in the scheme would keep the number of articles in the range 100-200 thousand. Geometry guy 21:06, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Dabbing question

User:Fritzpoll directed me to you on this question, saying that you'd likely be better to answer it. I'd like to help out with Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places, but I'm trying to make sure I know exactly what I'm supposed to do before I get started, and I had a few questions. How do we deal with places that have the same name, but in different countries? Since the lists are by country, how would we know that there were other potential place article (currently red-linked) in existance? Also, do you have an example (or more than one) of the kind of disambiguation that should happen? I looked through a few of the lists trying to find one, but wasn't able to. I think that will help with some of my understanding. Thanks -- Natalya 21:47, 1 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Okay, things are getting clearer - thanks for the explanation. So, if there is a blue-linked page, but goes to a different settlement, we should rename the settlements appropriately, and make the blue-linked page a disambiguation page? (This is what I took away from Andar, but do let me know if I've got that wrong). If that is true, if there are multiple red-linked places by the same name, should we go ahead and create a disambiguation page, and rename all the different red-links appropriately? -- Natalya 12:16, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Cool - that makes sense. For the second part of the question, though, if there are multiple red-linked places by the same name, should we go ahead and create a disambiguation page, and rename all the different red-links appropriately (so that they all remain red-links but there is a blue-linked disambiguation page for them)? -- Natalya 12:23, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I took piano through most of grade school too. My skills definitly laxed after I stopped taking lessons, but I still have a good time dabbling around (and, like, working on one piece for the past two years :D). That's great that you're still playing. -- Natalya 12:48, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

The cello is beautiful! One of my greatest regrets (well, not really greatest, but I do regret it) is that I played it for like three years when I was like 8, and then stopped. Now whenever I see/hear people playing the cello, I wish that I still played. :) So it goes, though! Music in general is great - I like that it's something that [almost] everyone likes in one form or another, because there are so many different kinds. -- Natalya 12:57, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Beaurocracy is the suck

Hey, sorry I did not reply earlier, I got a bit tired and went to sleep and when I woke up I see the discussion at the village pump has absolutelly exploded :s. I am beginning to feel a bit annoyed but again we can't help that people will be disagreeing. That is exactly right, I wish people actually focused creating of articles and not just discuss discuss discuss about random things that they do not care about. People are afraid of change I think. :/. Anyway I have made contact with WP:Afghanista, central asia and sout east asia about both the wikiproject and the village pump discussion. Hopefully that will help. I am considering advising a lot of the wikiprojects about this in advance (for example a lot of the african ones) any thoughts? Calaka ( talk) 01:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Darn... Well I suppose any response will be better than no response and there will hopefully be someone who glances at the wikiproject talkpages. Tonight when I am a bit more free I will make contact with a number of country wikiproject related to country and ask them to support the cause. I figure those with a background from lets say Bulgaria, will be more happy about their towns and villages of being created than someone born in a western style country. Anyway I will also advise them that the project hasent started yet and is a long way away, and that after 3 days (as Fritz suggested a time out on the village pump) there will be more activity. Calaka ( talk) 09:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Thanks for agreeing with me. I tried my best and I would have kept on going but the bell rang and Fritz asked for a 72 hour pause. I guess we will wait for him to see what his response will be and then a whole set of discussion will eventuate at the village pump. Hopefully this will not discourage people to continue on with the dabbing of the articles or even Fritz himself (i.e. hopefully he will continue uploading the lists onto the country pages so that there is more time for dabbing to occur.
In another note, may I propose (which I suspect is what the solution to most of the oppositions will be and what Fritz is going to say in 72 hours) is to somehow (with finding more references) include more information per article for the bot to add on. I suspect many will argue at the one sentence article even if it has a map, geo, location etc etc but with a paragraph (or 5-6 sentences) they will find it harder to argue against. Cheers! Calaka ( talk) 09:55, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Exactly! This is a wikipedia! Things will change and get updated all the time!! Many articles have started of as being one liners and have slowly moved their way to the top. They will not stay static I am sure of it! Calaka ( talk) 09:59, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Anyway I shall be away for several hours (probably 2/3 AM wikipedia time) as I unfortunately have a lot of study to do (revision for exams you see;) ). When I am feeling a bit tired I shall go on to contact all of the wikiprojects involved. Cheers Bio! Calaka ( talk) 10:15, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Non-specific links to Encarta

Regarding the controversy about the non-specific links to Encarta made by FritzpollBot, I see that many of your articles (at a rough estimate, about a thousand?) have also included these links: see [1]. As has been said elsewhere, these links are of no encyclopedic value, because they do not lead to any specific resource. Could you please fix these, or remove them? -- The Anome ( talk) 11:08, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Project

Already suggested this to Fritz, but the thing to do would probably be to add a clear, detailed description of how to generate the lists at Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places and then send a message to each of the national/territorial projects indicating that the lists are being created and that their input in creating them would be very welcome. Getting the extant projects involved is probably the best way to go. John Carter ( talk) 14:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

No, when I thought about it, I think it probaly is the only way to organise the discussion. I think Blofeld and I were just a bit wary given what happened yesterday. I think it's fair to say we were both a bit poll-shy by the end of it. That's why I didn't press the point, and why I reverted BoS' edit Fritzpoll ( talk) 17:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Re: Hi

Hey, sure, come on in. :) I realize that is would be extremely diffucult for editors to write the same thousands to millions of articles the bot is proposing. There are many good points, and the bot would be helpful in many ways, but I have to consider the possible drawbacks. For example, a backlog of CSD, AFD, Newpages, etc. I just feel that it is not a good idea to take the human factor out of writing articles, as a bot may produce articles with poor writing, copy vios, and such. I'm not saying this is an entirely bad idea, but that's just my opinion. The new, improved proposal is much better than the original one, so I might end up supporting it before it's done. Also, you should feel free to join in at the village pump, as everybody should have their right to an opinion. Cheers, Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone

Heh. Those are some good points. As long as the bot has some kind of limit as to how large a location has to be before creating an article, I might support the proposal. Best, Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 18:49, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I know, it's a shame that some people just can't grasp it. I prefer the original bot proposal, I think the new one may introduce extra bureaucracy which could stifle the article creation; the director of Wikimedia UK supported the initial proposal as well as 100 editors, it's a shame it had to be given up. Are we going to continue dabbing the FritzpollBot pages? I'm looking at the Wikimedia Commons for Burkina photos, looks like I'll just have to go back to improving Burkina articles if too much red tape is added to the new proposal. EJF ( talk) 19:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Yeah. The idea of concensus begins to seem like fitting in the ideas ofpeople who have no experiance with these things. Ah well, I guess the bot won't be much of a help after all, and Burkina is the place to go. I'm an Editor of the wiki citation needed 19:43, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply
The proposal isn't actually that much different, to be honest. Mostly, with the original discussion, we never got a chance to make our case because the whole thing kicked off without us. The community had some legitimate concerns. The new proposal largely restates what the intention was - human checking of extracted data. The data will just be of higher quality, and we'll get more done straight off. The community just needs to hash out an idea of how to handle notability, and it is doing a good job - this discussion is much less divisive and much less "us vs. them". The bot will be as useful as it was before, and more useful for the acquisition of extra data to populate the articles with. Don't write it off just because we're being slightly limited from the original proposal Fritzpoll ( talk) 12:00, 3 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Adding

It isn't that much work by hand to add them - I managed as an experiment to see how long it would take to fill out a couple of California counties with data from the GNIS - about 40 or so per hour new articles can be created - just populate templates via spreadsheets or word (consider it a mass mailing and the word processor knows what to do). Okay, I will start with Category:Cities, towns and villages in Burkina Faso, using {{AfricaProject|class=stub|importance=low}}. Would that work for you? I just want to be sure that I won't make any errors, and that there aren't any suprises. I'll discuss a way to see if I can have the plugin for my bot (my bot uses AWB) assess the larger articles as higher than stub, but if you could auto add the new articles to a category, such as Category:Afghanistan geography stubs, that would be really helpful. I'll await a reply before starting the task. Steve Crossin (talk) (email) 14:32, 3 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Bot

Stating that the bot would add an infobox to each existing populated location if it doesn't already have one might be a good idea. A lot of these arguments seem to be about "inherent notability", which is basically irrelevant. Ryan in particular seems to be indicating that there is no claim for inherent notability, despite the fact that, I have to assume, the local newspapers provide sufficient enough coverage for notability to be established. And, at this point, I wouldn't try to add any such articles manually, while the discussion is going on, without sources because it is possible that the guideline/policy regarding notability of places might change as a result of the discussion, and the articles might, potentially, not qualify under the changed guidelines. My best guess would be to just continue making the lists of places, and then wait for the discussion to finish. John Carter ( talk) 17:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Lots of things still don't have articles, believe me. Look at the talk pages of the various Christianity projects for all the Christian churches (organizations, not buildings), that don't have articles yet. I am shocked! Such a big city did not have a wikipedia article just a few days ago! You should put that at the start of the discussion. How can they possibly say no to that!! I was getting a bit worried a day or so ago and was thinking that Fritz was just going to close shop and forget about the entire thing due to the amount of opposition present in the discussion! Calaka ( talk) 11:53, 4 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Exactly right. I personally don't think a limit should be in place in terms of popultion size. I mean, I do not imagine there to be a large population of all of the articles in the American Samoa places but I still think they will be great to have. But yeah, no mater what you do, you will always have a handful of individuals that oppose.
Anyway I was going to post the message on to the various wikiprojects (samoa, american samoa, and polynesia) but it appears that they are not particularly active and samoa/american samoa might need to be merged into polynesia. I suppose I can make the message there (at wp:polynesia) for anyone that is interested to have a look.
Oh and I personally don't think getting a new wikiproject will be a good thing? I do not object it but maybe it is fine as a small task grouop of the missing encyclopedia wikiproject? Notability of Bob Burns (drummer)

A tag has been placed on Bob Burns (drummer) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{ hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Wikieditor 222    22:22, 4 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I've just fixed a couple of articles to read "southeastern" instead of "south-eastern". After seeing several with the hyphen, I paused, and I'm beginning to wonder if the Brits use a hyphen? Missing articles

I personally think the Missing encyclopedic articles project is the logical parent. What I'm going to try to do is run through the various geographical sources I have and just, basically, check off those which seem to qualify as having sufficient content to merit separate articles. Then, as I indicated to Fritz, we can try to figure out the locations of any that don't seem to qualify for separate articles and add at least their names and descriptions to the extant articles. Also, clearly, I'm going to expect that we have "List of X in Y" for virtually every field. I do think the smaller countries might be the best way to start, though, so if nothing else we can more quickly review the output and see if there are any bugs. I would hate to find out that there was an unexpected bug out there which affected all the articles on China and India created, and giving it the chance to "iron out" any such errors on the smaller runs sounds reasonable. Atnafu Abate pictures

Hi (er, do you prefer to be addressed as "Blofeld", "Mr Blofeld", "His Evilness", or simply "Bald Guy"?) -- The first link you gave me didn't work (I figure it was due to some kind of copy prevention hack), & I had to do some research to identify him in the second. In the later case, he was the fellow on the right, with the broad nose; in the middle is Tafari Benti & on the left is Mengistu. If the first picture came from gettyimages.com, or has a "JAMD" watermark on it (it was the first one in the results image.google.com threw up), then the three men are standing in the same order. (If not, that seems to be the best one I've found on the Internet so far.) But mentioning "gettyimages.com" leads back to the main reason I tend not to add images to my articles: I don't want the hassle over politically correct licenses. Yes, one could argue Fair Use applies in this case -- especially since Ethiopian copyright law is a vast unknown -- but the political commissars in this case could argue that a free image could be obtained in this case & have it deleted. :-(

As for the Ethiopia articles -- when you & Fritzpoll can use my material, let me know & I'll send it to you. It will take a day or two to remove the material for existing articles & put the rest in order. (Especially if you want it in finished format.) Get well soon. -- llywrch ( talk) 16:53, 10 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Hi Blofeld - just to note that we should discourage people from editing the existing lists. The data is insufficient for article creation per the consensus at WP:GEOBOT and we'll need to start from scratch with volunteers from the existing WikiProjects. What's important at this stage is to get the organisation together first - a place to base the project, and the methods we will be using. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{ dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. hi!

Yes I did, and thanks for the barnstar!

I might be able to use the location map, but it won't be super easy. The NGIA data (is that the right acronym) seems pretty hit and miss as far as communes (well, everything in cambodia) go. For at least some communes I have found maps that indicate where they are in their districts (like in Ou Ya Dav District), but figuring out the coordinates from this info will take a bit of doing. I'm not sure if it might not be better to provide a map that indicates the position of the district in the province (i.e. a map like the second one in Ou Ya Dav, but with only the district indicated in blue rather than the whole province), and then a map showing the communes within the district like the one that's awkwardly outside the infobox (with perhaps the relevant commune colored in). This way you could see the shape of the commune rather than just a dot, and the location of the district in Cambodia would give you a sense of where it is in the general scheme of things. We could ask people at WP:GL to help making svgs for this. I'm all right at editing svgs but really pretty clueless about making them from scratch from a raster.

And hopefully I will get to the commune navbox thing, but I'm not sure if at this point it doesn't make more sense just to combine those into district level articles because I don't think there's much more info to be found out there. (Maybe this will be different in more populated provinces.) Mangostar ( talk) 16:24, 11 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I know, it's amazing how sad some of the provinces are. Like Kampong Speu Province, with 600,000 residents! The LOC stuff is a great resource. Somewhere there is a long-dead WikiProject Country Studies or something along those lines that I found after I made my page. Perhaps it could be revived. 1958 elections in Laos is great and perfectly acceptable. When you link to the source though, be sure to link to the main page for the Laos country study rather than the specific section ( diff) because the links to the subpages are temporary and go dead quite shortly after you use them. Using a bot for this is an interesting idea, but I don't really think it makes sense. The legwork in cutting and pasting the text is relatively minor, and there is a lot of human judgment in changing tenses, adding appropriate tags, figuring out how to integrate text, etc. I have used some basic templates (e.g. User:Mangostar/religion) which seemed sufficient. Mangostar ( talk) 17:32, 11 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Please have a look at this one and the dab tree descendent from it. See if you'd do anything different. I have a feeling that the article at Galagedara is actually one of the ones in the dab, but which? and how do we know? the problems with unreferenced articles....

I have no objection to being notified, and would much rather you notified someone than you didn't tell anyone at all, but I really don't see the logic of dropping a note to one stub-sorter, when you could say essentially exactly the same thing to all of us at once at the proposals page -- that's exactly what it's for, after all. They don't have to be any more detailed or polished than the information you provided to me: we can work out the details from there. Alai ( talk) 15:49, 12 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Consultation

Hey Blof!

I wanted to ask you something:

One user has started creating tempates for Award winning films of Filmfare and National film awards. Here they are: {{ FilmfareCriticsAwardBestMovie}}, {{ NationalFilmAwardBestFeatureFilm}}, {{ NationalFilmAwardBestActor}}, and even categories -- which means he will continue creating templates for all the categories.

Do you think they are needed? If they aren't - I think we should make it clear to him, so that he stops creating them. In fact, it's not an easy task - so although I appreciate his efforts - I don't want to ruin his hard work after he finishes them all. I think it will make many page loaded of templates... Think of Satyajit Ray, who has won over 30 National Film Awards....

What do you think? Shahid Talk2me 22:28, 12 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Hey! Thanks for the reply. Here are the templates he has created as of yet: {{ FilmfareCriticsAwardBestMovie}}, {{ NationalFilmAwardBestFeatureFilm}}, {{ NationalFilmAwardBestActor}}... Shahid Talk2me 16:12, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Oh yes - see Chak De India, Lage Raho Munnabhai etc., Shahid Talk2me 16:17, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Well thanks! :) I just went through some Academy Award-winning films and actors -- Titanic (1997 film), Gladiator (2000 film), Vivien Leigh, Bette Davis -- the format is equal... What do you think we'll have to do? This editor, User:Last Contrarian, though a newcomer on here, is doing a very productive job. See our conversation on his talk page. He said he thought it would be good if we created such as there are already for the Oscars... Although Filmfare is not Oscar LOL (also my POV), I don't know - my opinion is damn mixed!!! Do you know someone else we can consult? Shahid Talk2me 16:38, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Rudbar coordinates

The coordinates you provided for Rudbar, Iran, point to a dry gulch. No evidence of human settlement can be seen there. Was there a problem with the database or some sort of typo? Phlegm Rooster ( talk) 08:27, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply

  • I know the town is there. I'll fix the coordinates, but I remain concerned about the quality of the database you used. If I look at more Iranian towns, will I find more mistakes? Phlegm Rooster ( talk) 16:14, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply
    • Well, I just fixed them. I think it would be better if the seconds were added at the same time the degrees and minutes were added, the coordinates were off by miles. What if there were two towns in close proximity? Phlegm Rooster ( talk) 16:23, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Afghanistan book

The source looks to be a fairly good one. The downside is it is a bulky six-volume series, broken up into regions. I'm going to try to add the content to all the recently generated stubs, although I don't myself see a lot of direct references to several of them in the book, but that might just be varied spellings. Fritz did want to try to focus on the previous generated stubs first, though, and I think that makes sense. Once that's done, I'll add what I can to all the other articles. John Carter ( talk) 16:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Dunno where it is exactly, but it did, when the book was written, answer to both names. The entry on it specifically doesn't indicate exactly where it is, I think because the entirety of Afghanistan is reduced to six volumes, and I do get the impression the governmental centers have changed since it was first written. It does have some updates since then, but indicating which province places are in isn't among them. John Carter ( talk) 19:02, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply
I knew I missed a few there. The book was updated, a little, in the 1970s, although not uniformly and not for all entries. Any new geographical coordinates I'm putting in come from there. I do know about the difficulties of placing being deserted or renamed since the Soviet era. Unfortunately, I can't know which might have been renamed, which exterminated, or whatever else. On that basis, it seems the safest way to go is to just add everything in, and hoping in time that we'll either get a slightly better idea of the layout of the country and/or know which names have been changed and to what. If they haven't been, they're ghost towns. If they have been, they can be merged. But a lot of these seem small enough that they might not be mentioned anywhere else, so I'm guessing better safer by having it than sorrier later when the information might not be available, or we've got an idea which have been renamed. John Carter ( talk) 19:15, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Huh? Please elaborate. I'm an Editor of the wiki citation needed 18:11, 13 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Oh. That. Well, I'm really just trying to upload the data in a form that can be used for both the Department page and template. Could you please just fix it as I go along as it is much easier that way. Perhaps I'll do it myself, but it just takes up too much time when I could be creating the articles. Towns and villages in Uruguay

Hello, I was just translating some articles into Catalan and Spanish when I saw the great deal of work you have done with a lot of towns - that don't even exist on eswiki - in Uruguay. For this reason I wanted to thank your interest and, at the same time, let you know that your editions in this sense are fully appreciated. Regards, -- Góngora ( Talk) 03:02, 14 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Gracias a ti. I would try to find some information available about towns in Uruguay. Nevertheless, I think we may not get much of what we are looking for, since most of these villages and towns are relatively unknown, even for Uruguayans themselves. By the way, if you want to keep on writing about my country, go ahead! I'm afraid there aren't many Uruguayans on enwiki, so hadn't been for your interest, things would have remained the way they were. Greetings, -- Góngora ( Talk) 16:22, 14 June 2008 (UTC) reply

As a post-script: shortly after the Nick Holder deal earlier today regarding SD notability, which you commented on, I put in a Speedy Delete tag on a new article for The Blue Mountains (Elgar) as a copyright violation. The author who posted the article put in a hang-on notice, and I provided information from a British government web site showing the work was not public domain and was under copyright protection through 2029. Of course, no one bothered to say thanks for that -- but a wobbly call on Nick Holder, of course, brings out the commentary. Go figure1 :) -- Ecoleetage ( talk) 16:39, 14 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Sorry to bother, but I think I won’t be able to provide the input that I hoped. Two obstacles turned up: (1) I have a list of to-do projects here that require my attention, and (2) I had a bit of a cold slap in the face from your pal EotW on an unrelated matter and I don’t believe he would be happy to work with me. I didn’t want to flake out, which is why I am dropping word here. Thank you for considering me and good luck in bringing the African and Asian experience to this site. Lists of American Films

Hi. I was looking at the Cinema of the United States lists -- like the American_films_of_1973 -- and noticed how many of these are not American films. For example, just in the start of the 1973 list, there is Amarcord, Andrea, Asphyx, Blood Brothers, Blood of the Dragon, Bobby, Bread and Chocolate, A Brief Vacation, Brother Sun, Sister Moon, etc. So before I started deleting films from the list, I thought I should ask you if there was some good reason why any of these are included in a list of American films? CactusWriter 19:44, 14 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Okay, then. No problem. I knew you had done a whole lot of work on these pages, (nice job, too), and I didn't want to step on anyone's toes around there. But I'll be happy to tidy up anything I run across. However, I'm still sticking with writing articles on the Danish cinema -- I started back in the beginning with Peter Elfelt, August Blom, Valdemar Psilander, Carl Erik Soya, etc., etc. etc. and have been working forward -- as well as trying to wipe out the red links on some Bodil Award lists I made. I'm certainly not as fast as you, but I'm trying to be thorough. And I sure as hell wouldn't want to be trying to tackle the American cinema alone. Now that's a pile of work! I admire your dedication. CactusWriter 20:19, 14 June 2008 (UTC) reply

*Sigh*

I said once I'm fed up dealing with some things on here. Remember? Here's another story:

One user, B.Wind ( talk · contribs), had created an "article" called Queen of Bollywood (hahaha), which was later speedied after my request. He was simulataneously adding the title to multiple pages, from Aishwarya to Rani to even Priyanka Chopra (who is not even that popular in Bollywood). He said he was looking for more names to add. But it did not end here. He started reverting edits and returning gushing comments about Queen of Bollywood to the articles themselves. It made articles look like fansite/magazine-style written fangush, as well as blatant POV and false list.

Good to note that in between he overlooked some of Bollywood's most popular actresses who had often been described this way, from Nargis to Hema Malini to Zinta. I of course will never let adding such fangush to the page of Zinta, nor any other Bollywood related article - it's just the matter to show how biased the list was.

I can't believe this project is in danger of becoming a sleazy magazine. It's just so sad.

Please see the first discussion on the talk page of the admin - User talk:DaGizza#Queen of Bollywood.

Villages in Azerbaijan

Hi. Sometime ago I saw you had created a couple of articles about villages in Azerbaijan such as Abadkend, Abaskhanly, and also Template:Location map Azerbaijan. I appreciated your work and decided to continue the project. Among many articles that I created about villages one is Sheylanli. This village is located in Lachin which is under control of Armenian forces. The article has been many times vandalized by unknown IP's from Yerevan (many of them got blocked) and their actions strongly supported by User:Pocopocopocopoco. Finally I got article semi-protected to prevent it from vandalism of anons. Since then mentioned user started doing the same actions -- eventually vandalizing the article -- by bringing many different unrealistic reasons for which he has got warned . Now he brought the article here to achieve his aim and has a huge bunch of unrealistic claims about the article. Once I answer his claims he changes the format of discussion to something new about the article and now he is very far apart from what he started with and claims that he doesn't believe even the village exist and wants start AfD!
I'd like also to bring to your attention that this user got me blocked on violation of 3RR(by that time I didn't know) teamed up with unknown IP's to avoid 3RR. Thus I suspect his problem is not only with the article but also with my existence as an editor on wiki. This is clear from facts that he has many times reported me on violating rules and his reports declined because they weren't true.
I need therefore your immediate attention to the situation as an admin. I don't want to lost all my time to save the article from attacks of User:Pocopocopocopoco instead want to do some useful contributions. With Best Regards, -- Gülməmməd Talk 01:45, 16 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Re: Dead links

IIRC, in some cases, I either introduced a trivial typo, or used an obsolete URL. I've been trying to fix them as I add more material to these articles, but I haven't revisited all of them yet -- lack of time or additional information, I'm afraid. Do you have any examples to help me confirm my recollection? -- llywrch ( talk) 18:40, 16 June 2008 (UTC) reply

URLs inside the *.et domain can be unreachable some times, other times they respond very slowly. (I wouldn't be surprised if the entire country is connected to the rest of the Internet on a single T-3 -- or smaller -- connection.) If you send me an email address (by the "E-mail this user" link on my page), I can send you either (1) a copy of the pdf I've been using for those estimates (from the Central Statistical Agency (Ethiopia)), or (2) a couple of .csv files with the census & geographical material that I created in part from the CSA materials, & which I have been using for these articles. (It may take me up to 24 hours to email these files to you, though: I have to wait until my daughter is taking another nap.) -- llywrch ( talk) 19:09, 16 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Inhambane is certainly a nice-looking article; reading it gave me an idea or two to expand on some of the Ethiopian articles. BTW, do you have a source for the population numbers? While I doubt any rational reader is going to question those figures, eventually this article will find its way up the GA/A-class/FA ladder, & IMHO it's best to source the information at the beginning & not months later when one's (well, mine in this case) memory has faded a bit. -- llywrch ( talk) 20:07, 16 June 2008 (UTC) reply

While I can't take all of the credit for Ethiopian settlement articles, I suspect that part of the reason this country does better than the average African one is that it has someone attempting to systematically creating articles for every settlement of a given size, rather than available resources. While there is a pleasantly surprising amount of geographical information about Ethiopia available, I suspect that at least as much -- if not more -- would be available for Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, & Sudan. One tactic is to identify European explorers who recorded their journeys through a given part of Africa, & use their writings -- as well as the secondary sources. I guess that there aren't enough people who are willing to simply accumulate information about one country & work from there. -- llywrch ( talk) 23:49, 16 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Geez! Thanks for your kind words about my new article and of course that welcome. It is always endearing to hear from someone I know well here on Wikipedia. How's the bald one doing? :) Cheers! Mspraveen ( talk) 16:19, 18 June 2008 (UTC) reply

DYK suggestion is already through! :) I'm yet to begin on the associated article - this director's debut film called Grahanam (trans: The Eclipse), a story about a socio-cultural superstition in rural India. Quite an interesting superstition according to which a man gets disease-stricken when bedded by an older woman. If you are not interested watching it, I might reveal the outcome of the film here :) About the GA in the pipeline, I don't quite remember it. Good for me that none of my GA nominations have ever failed! It is only when it comes to setting up at FAC, I've faced two failures - Lagaan and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Right now, I'm working towards GAs for Vanaja (film) with Shahid's copyediting and Rang De Basanti's FAC nomination. This is, of course, beside creating new articles on Indian cinema. Great work on the Africa articles. I was mightily pleased with the approval of the Geobot; sorry that I couldn't contribute much to its discussion. I simply am amazed at your motivation and dedication to create and improve articles here! :) And, I'm just fine Blofeld. It is just a nice wiki-unwind at the end of the day. Mspraveen ( talk) 16:43, 18 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Hello Sir Blofeld! Greetings of the day! Let me thank you for your insightful comments. I didn't mean any disrespect towards you by not replying to your comments; rather I was quite busy yesterday. Taking cues from your words, I removed the awkwardly placed sentences related to the director in the production and I rearranged the sentences to allow a sense of flow in the production aspects. Though some awards are not notable, the recognition it received at these notable film festivals are probably important, I think. So, I lowered the names of some of the non-notable awards into plain awards for whichever category.
Regarding the soundtrack, I think it should have one, but my search yesterday proved futile. Maybe something over the weekend. About the dance, I found some interesting details from the press kit released by the producers for a film festival. The girl wasn't even selected at first and then after she sang a song on Gandhi beautifully, she was selected and there was a minimalistic mention of her dance training. However, I think I can manage something.
As far as deconstructing the filmmaker's cinematic techniques is concerned, I can certainly do it, but do you think I can add this in the reviews section because most of these details were covered by some of the reviewers themselves.
Thanks as again! Your words gave me enough ideas to add more sensible detail to Rang De Basanti article as well! Just before signing off, I realized that I might not have thanked you before with a shiny button. Maybe this doesn't mean much, but it is just my way of showing my appreciation of having you around. Have a super weekend! Mspraveen ( talk) 12:41, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I would have, but that would probably make the article too ugly, at least for a small ish article. Also, you said you wanted to get African parks up to B-class status-- Hell's Gate National Park, which I also completely rewrote, is now a good article! I'm working on finishing Bam today, perhaps I will start an earthquake-related article, but probably, I will work on expanding William Tubman up to GA and hopefully FA, althugh this is Africa. Your fool-proof poster template

Greetings, Blofeld. I've been using a version of your fool-proof poster template, which I have saved HERE. But, the other day a bot tagged an image and my talkpage twice as "unsourced" when it was plainly sourced. I notified the bot-owner, about it HERE, and the reply was that I should use "{{non-free media rationale}}" instead of "{{navbox}}". Is this right? It seems to me the media rationale is in the box... and it's been fool-proof up til now... any ideas? Dekkappai ( talk) 20:29, 18 June 2008 (UTC) reply

What we need is an image similar to Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg, which says, "This perfectly good fair use image has been deleted, and many editors' time and effort has been wasted, because a bot-user could not make the bot read simple English, and a bot-user is not required to follow the same rules and procedure which contributors must follow. This act of vandalism is fully approved by the Wiki community. Please support our fine work in removing content with your donations. Thank you." Dekkappai ( talk) 21:16, 18 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Thanks-- I'll look into it and, hopefully that will keep the bot-vultures satisfied for a month or two... What gets me is the attitude of these guys-- it's always more important to remove content than to add it, and if some-- even a lot-- of perfectly good images get deleted for no reason? Doesn't matter-- it's our responsibility to work with the bots, not the bot's responsibility to act responsibly. If this kind of thing were done without a bot, it would be plainly called vandalism. The guy is no doubt on the fast-path to Adminship, and the more material he deletes, the more likely he'll become one... Some days I wonder how long I will put up with this kind of stuff... Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Israeli-Dutch people, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Israeli-Dutch people has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. ( CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Israeli-Dutch people, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. On SUnday, I will, as promised, write up the instructions correctly at the Bot's new page, and get us going on what we should be doing. Don't use the old dabbing, it's no use right now. While you wait for me, I suggest you have a quick discussion at the new project page about whether or not it is ok to create lists of place names by district in the event that we can't have an article because the place isn't referenced in other sources beyond atlases, what format those lists should have, etc. I will not be here after I click save, so don't hold out any hope of me answering questions until Sunday! Malawi

Finally, the summer is in sight and I'm getting some more free time at last! I spent this evening finding references and expanding Monkey Bay; unfortunately quite a few good sources were behind subscriptions and fees but I found enough to write a start-class article and hopefully a DYK. Less repetitive strain injury than going through the motions with the hundreds of Burkina stubs! I'll be returning to them and the templates tomorrow. Regards, EJF ( talk) 21:13, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I'm still about! Yes, and seems like there are quite a lot of articles in Malawi that could definitely get to start-class; seeing as Monkey Bay is only the 20th largest town in Malawi—never mind the other 50+ countries in Africa! That would be a great idea, it wouldn't be surprising if there are some major cities missing, the World Gazetteer looks like a good source of information, providing of course that it is reliable. Regards, EJF ( talk) 21:30, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Yes, indeed, very interesting history for what some would say is "a little non-notable African village". Hopefully it can be shown with expansions like that, that any small town can be proven to be notable and interesting. I think I'll order the Bradt guides for Niger and Sudan tomorrow. Regards, EJF ( talk) 21:51, 20 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Thanks for the note; I'll have a proper look at that this evening; I decided to work on at another Malawi stub this afternoon—it's taking me a while as there is a quite a lot of information, could end up with 40+ references... Regards, EJF ( talk) 14:34, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Bollywood and Cinema templates

Hello Blof...

I wanted to tell you about. I thought about the templates {{ Bollywood}} and {{ CinemaofIndia}} and whether they are needed in film articles. IMO, and as a matter of fact, they are not needed, not because they are non notable, but because they only link to years and regional industries, and don't link directly to the films themselves, which contradicts the main idea of template usage: templates should appear in articles mentioned in them.

In that way, it will be possible to add direct templates to articles. What do you think? Shahid Talk2me 10:54, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I mean - they don't link to the articles themselved. The idea of templates in articles is that they have to appear in articles which appear within the templates themselves. The Bollywood template can be placed in all the year articles, while the cinema of India article in the regional industry articles. I'd had this discussion back in time with one editor who was removing them for that reason, only now I guess he is right. Let's open a new discussion. Because it's quite again the rules of WP. Shahid Talk2me 11:10, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
What do you say? Shahid Talk2me 11:15, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Blof please take it easy. Please don't forget that I was the one who along with you was adding these templates. The problem is that there isn't any direct links that would blacken them in the article. I somehow am for having Bollywood templates, because it (still indirectly) links to the films, but the cinema of india template links only to categories and regional industries which is redundant. What do you think about asking someone. I must be sure that these templates won't be removed in the future. Shahid Talk2me 11:29, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
I'm sorry if you felt like I'm trying to ruin your work. In fact, I do support having the Bollywood ones, because they are good navigational boxes. But what about Indian Cinema? I really think they are unnecessary, they just link to unneeded categories. Shahid Talk2me 11:48, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Oh hahahaha LOL!! I hadn't noticed cause your messages look very similar.... Great! I see the matter as resolved. I'll remove the IC ones. Shahid Talk2me 11:55, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
What do you mean by don't remove them from the categories? Remove what? Shahid Talk2me 12:21, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Of course. Shahid Talk2me 12:26, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Approve that? Both the templates were created by you, and are basically the same templates only that this one is for Indian and the other for American. The standard has to be equal for both. The rules that have been defined here, apply to the Indian cinema as well. Just that the standard was implemented on the Amrican, but not the Indian. So I've now done this. The one who had problems with that stopped insisting upon seeing the American one. I'm moving your message cause it gives wrong impression. And more than anything else, your approval is the most important to me. :) Shahid Talk2me 20:59, 21 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Could you please be more temperate with fellow task force editors when they raise valid questions regarding changes? You don't have to agree with him, but antagonizing an otherwise useful editor already thinking about leaving the task force - and doing so in a brazen manner that reeks of entitlement and ownership makes you look bad, alienates the editor, and tarnishes the image of the task force and the WikiProject at large. I'm sure that wasn't your intention, so please tread more carefully, assume good faith, and try to address editor's concerns solely on the basis of the issues at hand, and not the personalities or editorial histories, which are irrelevant to the question. Image mis-tagger up for Adminship

Hi, Blofeld. Not only has the editor continued mis-tagging images and insisting that everyone adjust to fit the quirks of his bot, he is now UP FOR ADMINSHIP! I was joking above about him being an Admin in training-- I really thought a deletionist as reckless and stubborn as this one would clearly be seen as unqualified for any authority here. Question

Hello Blofeld, I needed to ask you a question!! A user by the name of Brewcrewer redirected the page of Kambakth Ishq to Eight by Ten. Apart from having Akshay Kumar has the male lead, those two films have nothing in common. The former is directed by debutante Sabir Khan while the latter by Nagesh Kukunoor. (I think that someone re-created the article on KI again, and User:Brewcrewer probably thought that both the films were the same. Thus he redirected the page of KI to Eight By Ten.) Apparently, when Kambakth Ishq was first announced, a page was created for the film. However, since the film hadn't begun filming yet, it was nominated for deletion, and later on deleted. Now that the film is almost set to begin [in a couple of days/weeks], I was going to ask an administrator to restore the page again... maybe even re-creating the article again. Unfortunately, when I try to do so, it redirects back to Eight by Ten. Is there anything that can be done about it?? -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 20:02, 22 June 2008

Thanks for the quick response Blofeld!!! However, when the page was deleted, it was really well-written with lots of reliable sources. I don't think I will be able to find them again. I am also too busy to re-create the page again thus I wanted to ask an administrator to restore it. BTW, [when the film goes into production] who should I ask to restore the page?? Do you know any administrators?? -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 20:10, 22 June 2008
Thanks for your help!! BTW, how are you?? I hardly hear from you these days.. You told me that you would go through Kareena Kapoor's article but you still haven't. :( .. LOL.. I am just joking.. I know that you are probably busy with other commitments!! -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 20:15, 22 June 2008
No buddy, I haven't asked him yet though I plan to do so soon!! The film has begun entering into actual production so I think it is safe enough to ask an admin to restore the article again.
Blofeld, regarding your comment on her films, I have covered bad films as much as I can. In the turning point section, I have done so. However, just to note.. you indicated that you want the 2002-03 films covered individually... There are too many films.. I remember long time ago I asked Shahid about this. Only Mujhse Dosti Karoge & Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon were covered since both films were produced by popular, successful and large production houses. Furthermore, these two films were the ones that Kapoor was criticized the most. Kapoor's article is already getting long and I don't want it to get too long. Covering each film from 2002-03 would be boring to the reader.. that's why the third paragraph in the "Breakthrough" section summarizes the 2002-03 paragraph.. "During 2002–2003, Kapoor went through a negative period in her career. Featuring in six films, all of which proved unsuccessful, she appeared in two high profile films: Kunal Kohli's directorial debut Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002), which was produced by Yash Raj Films, and Sooraj R. Barjatya's Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003), which was produced by Rajshri Productions. Though both films generated great business overseas, they were critical and commercial failures in India. While her performance in the former was described as "inconsistent", her performance in the latter was criticized, "Kapoor was annoying in her role as Sanjana - a role we have seen her act many times before in movies such as [Karan] Johar's K3G (2001), [Subhash] Ghai's Yaadein (2001) and more recently [S J] Suryah's Khushi (2003)." These films marked the time when critics expressed their displeasure of her repetitious kind of roles and criticized that she was in danger of becoming typecast, which was fundamental in her attempting a diversity of more adventurous roles in the years following." What else do you suggest we do?? -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 21:29, 22 June 2008

Hey buddy, thanks so much for your work on the article!! I really appreciate it!! I plan to go through the article myself later on today [after I get back from work] or maybe tomorrow. As for the concerns you outlined, there are other "hottest lists" in "in the media" section such as Filmfare, Indiatimes, IndiaFM, PETA & Eastern Eye. BTW, I wanted to ask you two questions:

  • 1) I noticed that you had added info about Yaadein being criticized for its computer-generated effects and its script, something that would belong in the "review/reception" section of the movie. However, are we allowed to add these type of infos on actors' biographies?? I was looking through some FA's and didn't really notice any!!
  • 2) Are there still some parts that you've to go through in the article or you've looked through the whole article. P.S. The reason I am asking you this is so I know that you are done reviewing through the article, which will allow me to start a "peer review". I don't have much time before I return back to University. Furthermore, I will be leaving on vacation soon too. So there is not much time left!! :( I hope to see the article becoming a GA before I go back to University.

Re: National parks

Thanks Blofeld. I didn't do much to bring Sapo National Park up to GA status though-- User:Black Falcon did most of the work. I like your idea for a task force. A broader task-force scope than just national parks may be good, since there are a lot of wildlife reserves and other protected areas that also have articles. Your articles Minkébé National Park and Nechisar National Park are really good, well on their way to GA status IMO. In my experience, the hardest thing about writing articles on African protected areas is getting my hands on enough reliable sources so that an article can be developed up to B- or GA-status. Anyway, if you create a task force, count me in! Bláthnaid 21:51, 22 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Hi, thanks for creating that article, but did you realize that there is already at Coat of arms of Tibet page? women in wikipedia

I went to the NYC meet-up a few weeks ago and I was the only woman. I'd already been formulating my thoughts on the lack of women here since it seems that the vast majority of those I interact with are male, but that meet-up cemented it. It is odd given the number of women in other online fora that I participate in. I hadn't noticed that women in sports were underrepresented, but they certainly are in other fields here. Museums de-railed a bit. I need to get back to that. Been a busy few weeks with less on-wiki time then I'd want. TravellingCari the Busy Bee 01:08, 23 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I wanted to take Dil Hai Tumhara (my favourite Zinta performance as the neglected daughter of Rekha) and expand it, but I got confused with the cast section, which includes amazingly long and detailed descriptions of the characters, some of which should be passed to the plot section. LOL No you're not understanding the irony. The relationship between Bond and Blofeld is an ironic one and hyberbolic. Given that they are ultimate enemies of each other they tend to be friendly towards one another when meeting and Blofeld places in him easily escapable situations. As the plot is often too thin and laughable, the idea that Blofeld has indeed been expecting him despite ordering to have him assassinated is purely intentional. Blofeld, I was thinking of putting the article for a peer review after Shahid and I look through it. Apparently, Shahid told me that is he going to go through the article and fix some stuffs. In fact, I want to go through the article myself and make some minor changes. :) As of now, please don't put it up for a peer review. I will let you know when Shahid and I are done going through it. Furthermore, User:Epbr123‎ is also helping with the copyediting and I don't think he/she is done looking through the article yet. As for the hottest lists other than Rediff.com, there are other polls [from Filmfare, IndiaFM, Indiatimes, PETA & Eastern Eye] in "in the media" section in Kapoor's article; it is not just from Rediff. (Take a look for yourself!!) Regarding the taboo contradiction, let me explain this to you!! Acting is not considered a taboo in the Kapoor family but only for Kapoor women. Kareena's mom was an actress before she got married to Kareena's dad but she had to quit acting as per Kapoor tradition. In Kapoor tradition, outside women [that get married into the Kapoor family] are not allowed to work in films anymore after they get married. This is the same for their daughters!! Thus Kareena's mom didn't want her daughters to go through what she had to and left the house along with Kapoor and her sister. However, Kapoor men can act for as long as they live. You can read the article on the Kapoor family for more information. Do you get it?? Once again, thanks a lot for your work on the article!! Best Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 01:34, 24 June 2008

Well, I think Taran Adarsh is the most well-known film critic in India. There are other well-known critics like Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN and Khalid Mohammed from Hindustan Times but Adarsh has been in the business for a longer time thus many people respect his opinion and agree with it most of the time. As for my edits on Kapoor's article, I was thinking of going through the article myself after you have completely finished with the article. I don't want to just start editing and ruin your hard work. That is why you see I have just made some minor edits such as connecting and separating certain paragraphs. After you have done with the article, Shahid told me that he is going to go through it and later on me. Just don't forget to let me know when you are done with the article as I can let Shahid know about it ;) Don't worry take your time!!! Best Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz Talk 16:18, 24 June 2008
I'm a bit busy these days. Rahul, please take care of the points. I would like to go through it after you are all done guys. Blof you said you wanted to make further editing today. So go ahead. As Rahul Said, he will wait for you to make your edits, nobody will catch in between. so take your time.
As for Taran Adarsh, he is the most famous film critic, we can do nothing with that, that's why he somehow always comes first. Although bloggers don't like him that much because of him criticising different films which are generally considered good, newspapers always turn first to Adarsh to ask for his opinion of different matters, as well as film-makers who give him a copy of the film. That's why he is the first critic to review Bollywood films (generally two days before the the release). He's just like the Indian Roger Ebert in terms of importance. french cantons

There's a nice feature of the infobox: if you fill the field "canton" with a plain city name (for instance "La Ciotat"), and the article "Canton of La Ciotat" exists, there will be a link to that article. If there isn't an article with that name, unlinked "La Ciotat" is displayed. Markussep Talk 21:06, 24 June 2008 (UTC) reply

It's exactly the same for arrondissements as for cantons: if the article exists, there's a link, if it doesn't, only the name of the canton capital is displayed (no red link). All arrondissements have articles, so they're always blue (except when the name is wrong, or when the French article name is used and the "Arrondissement de X" redirect to "Arrondissement of X" isn't in place). And if you fill in something with square brackets, that is always used. Markussep Talk 11:59, 26 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Hi, me again. After talking to someone from this area ( User:Hadi1121), it appears that Jaghori is a district in the Ghazni Province of Afghanistan, and not a town. There are apparently numerous villages in the district, and the district center is a town called Sange-e-Masha, other townships are 'Angori' and 'Ghujoor'. He has told me in an email, There are no towns by the name Jaghori and the mentioned article does not refer to a "real" place. I know that for I come from the Jaghori district. A message from the past

Hello Blofeld. Long time no chat! I know that you have moved from improving wikipedia's film pages to improving its coverage of the entire planet. My congratulations. It was fun to see a couple of threads at the admin notice boards where people were wondering of you were a bot. I knew that the truth was that you are an extemely efficient evil genius who can defeat Mr Bond at every turn. Well, I know that you aren't going to believe this but I am almost done with British film pages that you set me to working on so long ago. While I drifted away from working on them daily (thus the delay in finishing them) I have kept coming back to them to continue to add films. I have one question that I wanted to put to you. The {{Britishfilmlist}} template that you created runs along the side of the page and pushes the table close together. It can cause some odd distortions in some of the boxes like the first film on this page [4]. The notes section also gets jammed up if a long description gets put in them. The creation of the {{CinemaoftheUK}} which is at the bottom of each page covers the same year by year info that is in the list template along with having links to several other wikipages. The other difference between the two is that the second one does not have the pic from the Fire Over England on it. So I have come to ask if we could; a) redesign the "Britfilmlist" template to run horizontally along the top of the page or b) just remove it and let the "CineotUK" template be the one that readers use to navigate to different years. I thought about being bold and implementing option "b" but, as you put so much work into creating them, I wanted to ask you before doing anything. Let me know your thoughts when you get a chance and keep up the excellent work that you are doing. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 06:01, 26 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I am sure that it is mostly an aesthetic thing for me. After all of the months of working with these pages I find that I like them better when the films title (see this version [5] of the above mentioned page with The Adv of SH SB} spreads out over two lines rather then taking three or four. The same visual applies, for me, to the list of actors (see this page [6] for 1963 where there are several films that the section for the actors listed looks like three pounds of sausage in a two pound tube. My other example woould be the page for the 1920's [7] where all ten years are still on one page (I can't figure out why the whacking great gap between the 1921 header and the table of films for that year exists by the way) I just like the way the years that spread all of the way across the page look over those that are shortened by the Britfilmlist template. As I say that is just my opinion perhaps you and other readers don't feel the same. My one other thought is that the two templates do cover the same territory and, in my time of editing here, I have become a bit of a stickler for removing redundant info. I hate reading the same info twice in the body of an article. I know that this thought doesn't quite apply to these templates, but, I like the CinemaoftheUK one better because, along with the links to the years, it includes links to several other wikipages (actors, directors etc.) I really liked your idea of moving it to the top of the page. These are just the thoughts of one editor which is one of the reasons that I came to talk to you before doing anything but I gotta go now - the Spain v Russia Euro Cup game starts in just a bit so we will talk to you later. I was: I just came back yesterday and should be leaving again tomorrow or the next day for a while. Nice job with the Coffee production in Costa Rica--my uncle lives there and frequently tells us of coffee plantations outside his town of Puerto Jiminez. Yes it is amazing how much just articles can be created, not even expanded--beyond so many ___ in ___ should be here and all the villages missing, the USGS lists hundreds, if not thousands of earthquakes that could be added and, by my estimates, there are roughly 2 million articles that need to be translated from other language Wikipedias. Plan

Only real question is regarding your proposed Step 4. A lot of these regions and countries don't have a lot of editors involved in or knowledgable about the subjects, so there will often be no real knowledge of the subject from them. There are very few people interested in Oceania at all, unfortunately, let alone in any way knowledgable about specific countries and areas. Other than that, though, I don't see any real problems. John Carter ( talk) 19:48, 26 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I would hesitate initially to move the lists directly into mainspace. However, we definitely could move them into wikipedia space, possibly as either subpages of the geography project or of the individual national/regional projects, and then move them either as a whole into mainspace later, or perhaps break them up into multiple articles, depending on what all gets included and how long they are. John Carter ( talk) 20:02, 26 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Not sure what you mean by "project directory" space. If you mean to the subpages of the Missing encyclopedic articles project geography group, yeah, that would work. John Carter ( talk) 20:10, 26 June 2008 (UTC) reply
The proposed table would work well for some populated areas, and maybe as the final draft for the created article. The only question that comes to mind to me is what to do with some of the, for instance, buildings, monuments, lakes, hills or mountains, etc., which might fall within the recognized territory of a given location, but which might not have enough content, based on the information available, to merit separate articles. It may be that making plans for such things this early would be less than really effective, but maybe not, as it might prevent having to go through them again to determine which article to place them in, I dunno. Image usage

Ah Sweet Mother of pearl!

Hello Blofeld, I'd a quick question regarding usage of images from Indiafm.com. I noticed that this website's permission has an OTRS ticket for use of images such as the one on Kareena Kapoor's article. For Rang De Basanti, I checked for some production stills which might be added to the article due to this OTRS. I found some at http://www.indiafm.com/movies/wstills/12493/index.html and I personally feel that the second image will add value to the article. I just wanted to double check with you regarding this. Mspraveen ( talk) 15:23, 28 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Thanks for the quick reply. Does this mean that for Kareena Kapoor's image, it was a special request to indiafm.com by the uploader? Mspraveen ( talk) 15:42, 28 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Great! I really hope so too. Although what you've suggested is the actor images, what the above image refers to are some production stills. As far as the permission goes, I felt that this classifies under that particular ticket. Let me ask Bollywood Dreamz and see what he has to say. Thank you, as again and ever! :) How is your weekend coming along and what's keeping you busy these days? Best regards, Mspraveen ( talk) 16:06, 28 June 2008 (UTC) reply

I've written to Bollywood Dreamz. I hope he can clear my questions on using these images. Good to know that you're spending time for yourself as well, besides Wikipedia :) Rowing? Wow, and where do you row? And, maybe trying to reduce multiple inches of waistline in a single day won't work :P Mspraveen ( talk) 16:25, 28 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Hi Blofeld! My apologies for the delayed reply. I was tied up in real life. Coming to what my interests are, I wouldn't brag about them because they aren't as vivid and varied as yours are. I'm heavily influenced by the stock markets, music, artistic and meaningful cinema, Formula 1 besides a bit of socializing once a while. My real life profession requires me to travel internationally at least twice a year. So the travel bug has bit me and I've already seen good places such as Munich (along with other historic capitals within Germany), Barcelona and Salzburg. Amateur photography gets the better of me when I travel to places in Europe :) That pretty much sums it up. How's it going for you?
Btw, I did some edits to Vanaja (film). I had added a little more content with a few good sources that spoke further on the cast as well as the issues during filmmaking. I would have loved to add a section on the cinematic techniques used in the film, but I was not able to secure a good enough source to find such information. Let's see. While this is at GAN, I'll be working towards further enhancing the comprehensiveness of Rang De Basanti (RDB). Twice failed, but third time lucky I hope to be at FAC with RDB. Can you possibly have a glance on it to see how it fares as per you? Cheers! Mspraveen ( talk) 16:44, 1 July 2008 (UTC) reply
Yes Sir! User:BOLLYWOOD DREAMZ has been extremely supportive and patient with my queries. Thanks to him, it is deemed acceptable and has been put up on OTRS pending till it is verified. How's the bald one doing? My regards to Mr. Bigglesworth. Have a good weekend! Cheers! Mspraveen ( talk) 18:39, 5 July 2008 (UTC) reply

Fair use rationale for Image:PedroLagar.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:PedroLagar.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the " my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast ( talk) 15:35, 28 June 2008 (UTC) reply

re:American films to list

Sorry, I don't understand the question! Lugnuts ( talk) 18:45, 30 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Yep, I did it based on WP:MOS. It was discussed at the talk page of WP:FILM (well, the American lists were). Them and the Korean films were the only ones I could find in either the genre or country lists that didn't start "List of..." Lugnuts ( talk) 18:50, 30 June 2008 (UTC) reply
I guess not. You can always revive the discussion, or move the pages back. Lugnuts ( talk) 18:55, 30 June 2008 (UTC) reply
You should check this out too (I assume it's on your watchlist?). Lugnuts ( talk) 19:02, 30 June 2008 (UTC) reply
OK, sorry for the misunderstanding. Just made sense to prefix the lists with "list of" at the time. Lugnuts ( talk) 19:10, 30 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Sounds good to me! Lugnuts ( talk) 19:13, 30 June 2008 (UTC) reply
