• If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

I have been to Uruguay 3 times, and the more I go, the more I love it. I currently have a wife who lives there along with her lovely 7 year-old daughter, and I plan in some time to finally move there and stay with them the rest of our days. I can think of nothing better than to keep the smiles on their lovely faces. I had always wanted to move away from the US, and always thought I would wind up in London, but I just find myself at total peace of mind with them in Montevideo (and Parque De La Plata as well). Uruguay is middle income country for your information. If you want real poverty then go to africa or central america. Regarding your feelings towards Uruguay, it is your personal reaction to it,so that's fine, hope you can feel happy and integrated in Australia, and in a consumer society.

Hi Gustavo! Good thing you've chosen to participate in the project. Regarding dulce de leche, note that I'm only saying that Argentina is home to dulce de leche, not the birthplace of it, although in fact the dulce de leche article cites an Argentine origin as the main legend. Anyway, the two countries were once part of a single land and were separated merely due to a series of political accidents... like every country in the world, really, since borders are an invention of military men and politicians. :). I see you're a contributor to various Uruguayan political topics, and wondered if you could take a look at Diego Traibel (if the article hasn't been deleted). It is supposedly about a Uruguayan senator.. but the history is full of nonsense, and I'm actually wondering if it isn't some hoax that has somehow managed to cling on for more than three years! No problem! I was only curious because I noticed that Feans and Antonio Adipe have the same birth date on Wikipedia, in the reference, and even in the official Olympic starting lists, which is really strange since they're both upper weight class boxers from Uruguay who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Bien sabemos que Uruguay se encuentra dividido administrativamente en Departamentos y no en Provincias, eso es así tanto en idioma español como en inglés. Hi Góngora, I know that a project without active participants doesn't stand a chance, but anyway, I am doing an effort to bring back to life WP Uruguay. I haven't seen much activity coming from its parent WP South/Latin America, so I figured it is best to try it locally. Lots of general articles are missing and my spanish is just good enough to translate some few things from the spanish wikipedia. Thank you for the feeback, Góngora. I am very glad to be doing a service to Montevideo. Coming from Athens, this is a big a change to the calmer and simpler, which I love. Also the character here is a calmer and kinder version of the Greek one. Soon I will have my Exploring Montevideo website in German too. A friend who volunteered offered this. Hi Góngora, I had to remove a big amount of text that was added to Peñarol, Montevideo because it is an almost verbatim copy of the English version of the PDF of the IMM that is included in the external links. The username of the editor coincides with the writer of the PDF, but this does not make it any less of a copyright violation. Anyway, I write to you because the same was done in the Spanish article [1] and my spanish is not good enough to find the right warnings and give the needed explanations. Can you please check it out? As I've never been to Uruguay (even though my girlfriend came from brazilian-uruguyan border (but Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul)), I don't have too many ideas where to start on de:Montevideo. Hi and thanks for the notice. I saw some of Losdedos german articles and thought they are good material to translate. As for the maps, I have downloaded a whole series of official maps in pdf and did my first steps in using Inkscape to work on svg format. I still plan to make more maps when I learn more about the software. Good going. I will keep track of your work for translations. You may have noticed that I have been adding street maps to all the barrios of Montevideo lately. Hi again. I was looking into "Geography of (subdivision)" right now. It looks like in the English Wikipedia most such topics have been merged or redirected to the "(Subdivision)" main articles. But I do find many exceptions. The issue I see is how much we can develop the articles of a series of "Geography of (Uruguay) Department". I will start a separate article for the Geography of Canelones, but I do see the posibility of having to merge it to the Canelones Department if suggested. You are right about the relative size of the infobox to the stub. My hope, of course, was that soon the barrio articles would be developed to a fair size. Some have the material it takes in the external links, some can be translated from the spanish or german wikis. But I see your point. Also I see now that for the arrondissements of Paris it is as you say ( 2nd arrondissement of Paris, 7th arrondissement of Paris, etc). And it is a useful idea to mark some important points in the map and have an index of them in the caption, like it is in the above examples. So, yes, thanks for the suggestion. I have a question about the status of the subdivisions of the Ciudad de la Costa. Someone has categorized Shangrilá as Category:Neighbourhoods in Uruguay. I know that before Ciudad de la Costa became officially recognized as a "city", all its parts were "balnearios". I hear them still named as such today. Is there any indication that now they are considered neighbourhoods of the new city? I don't see any other wikipedia doing this distinction, but of course all these articles are still in development. Otherwise it does make sense that the parts of a city are called neighbourhoods. The only thing I am worried is that we don't invent things we are not sure about. The problem with sourcing some articles is the sheer number of copies of Wikipedia articles that are out there. In this case you obviously found one, although perhaps not a copy of en.wiki. It's structured as a Wikipedia article, even has a citation request: "reconocido en todo el mundo [cita requerida]" which would wouldn't find in a source meeting our criteria. I've reverted this because as you probably know we don't use wikipedia articles as sources. The information isn't really that vital to the article but if it's to be in the article it is important to source it reliably. Dougweller ( talk) 20:47, 4 May 2011 (UTC) reply

Hi, I did a png map of the Ciudad de la Costa. I hope you can use it in other wikipedias. It is also made so that some main street names can be added later, if needed. Also I plan to make a simpler version which can serve as a locator map for the resort articles, because to place the Canelones locator map on each resort is not so useful, I think. Inspite of the above and all the issues brought in the discussion page, the nomination ended with "keep". So we have the above map free to use, plus the series of lower resolution location maps of the balnearios here: commons:Category:Maps of cities of Uruguay (I must still do the El Bosque location map). Meanwhile I am working full speed in completing the missing area (from Solymar to El Pinar) in OpenStreetMaps. So my thought is that we can use the smaller location maps in all the resort articles, but on the main article of Ciudad de la Costa we can use a much bigger (and 100% free) OpenStreetMap, where also names of streets will be visible. Hi Góngora, yes, thank you for the links, I am aware of the new division. It is even stated in the main Montevideo article. But this does not influence the series of articles about the barrios. It will be an additional series about the municipios with completely different content. Do you plan to change the barrio articles as per municipios in the Catalan wikipedia? Well Wikipedia is at odds with Google Maps because of copyright issues, so we have to use OpenStreetMaps to do our mapping. I'll do a similar map, but it will not be a satelite hybrid, just the usual street map thing. I will let you know when I upload. I did lots of work arranging all the Montevideo photos in commons yesterday: commons:Category:Montevideo. Check out subcategory Barrios of Montevideo. It's a work in progress. Indeed it would have to be OSM. Hoverfish is much better equipped than me to draw these up! I don't know if you saw the exchange I had with Dr.Blofeld about moving "neighbourhood" articles to "barrio" ones. I did so, mainly because of the outer barrios that are not really neighbourhoods but rural sectors. So " barrio" remains a better definition, plus it has an english use and article. But i am not sure about how to go about the "municipios". Should I use the spanish "official" version or do they fit the generic definition of municipality well enough? Thanks. Its usually those who contribute nothing to wikipedia itself but run about brandishing tags and policies and claiming other editors are rubbish that say such things anyway. Its complete ignorance and contrary to what wikipedia is about. I remain confident that 99% of the content I add to wikipedia meets requirements and if anybody challenges something I'll rework it into another form so the context is right. Hi Góngora, not that this is of crucial importance, but I would like your opinion as WikiProject Uruguay member. I would like to set an importance standard for all departments, cities, towns and villages. In general terms, I think departments, capitals and cities above 50.000 should be "high", then from 8.000 to 50.000 they should be "mid" and all below 8.000 "low" unless there ia some stated reason, like an important historic place or like containing something of big importance. Hi Góngora, I noticed that you often add the defaultsort template, even when the name of the article is the same with the one you assign to the Defaultsort parameter. The thing is, I always erase such templates when they simply repeat the article title, or when the difference is so small as to make it utterly improbable to become misplaced in sorting, as for example "Tacuarembó" being defaultsorted as Tacuarembo, since no other name could start with "Tacuaremb-". I see you did a Costa de Oro template in the catalan wiki. Looks great! I will soon follow suit here. I have a problem. I measure distances with the ruler tool in Google Earth and come to impossibly smaller numbers for the balnearia than the ones stated by the INE pages. Measuring from the edge of Montevideo Department (the bridge of Carrasco) and via Giannattasio, I reach Pinamar at 20km or 22km via Interbalnearia. But in the INE ( http://www.ine.gub.uy/biblioteca/toponimico/TOPOletraP.doc) it states "ruta Interbalnearia Km. 36,5 aproximadamente". Now this is a huge difference and I wonder how they come to such numbers. Where do they count zero on the IB? If the Google Earth ruler comes to such huge differences, I have to stop using it and correct or delete hundreds of measurements I have done till now and used in articles. Any clues? Hi again, this time it's about an article you started in the english and catalan wikipedias. I see the spanish one precedes them by 3 years, so I assume you took it from there. The problem is that there is no such populated place. There is a nearby Los Cerros de San Juan and then there is a locality about 6 km east of it called Paso de la Horqueta, but it is not populated. If you think it is worth keeping as a locality, do so. The problem is that we might open the door for any locality stubs, which is not a rewrding area for us or for the readers, unless of course there is something significant in a locality. I am sure that the football club you are referring to is in one of the surrounding populated centers. If Horqueta is the name of a region then it has a sports club, but I have scanned the area over Google Earth for enough hours to be sure there is neither a settlement nor a football field. The other possibility is that what the article names Horqueta, appears officially under another name. But then its location is not around the coordinates of the Paso de la Horqueta but further out north or east of Paso Antolín 34°11′57″S 57°47′11″W / 34.19917°S 57.78639°W / -34.19917; -57.78639. Anyway, if there is sport club named after this place, it is good you keep the stub, as we might be able to write something, after all. Hoverfish Talk 20:09, 6 July 2011 (UTC) reply

I have located the Autódromo Pilón Banchero del Club La Horqueta Wánderers, which the search for Horqueta Wánderers Club gives. It is in Tarariras at 34°15′44″S 57°37′27″W / 34.26222°S 57.62417°W / -34.26222; -57.62417 and next to it is a football field (I presume of the same club). Hi Góngora, I doubt I will find a straightforward solution for this, so I ask your opinion. As I have seen in the references of the parlamento.gub.uy, the rising order of categories from centro poblado upwards is Caserío, Pueblo, Villa, Ciudad. Now, for caserío, the term "hamlet" is quite fitting, but I am not sure if "pueblo" always corresponds to "village" and "villa" to "town". Some "pueblos" are town-sized and some "villas" are village-sized. Intuitively I feel there must be some requirements for the government to raise the statue from one category to the next, but I have no other clues. Thank you Góngora. I am glad you are enjoying your holidays over there. Over here I am enjoying such things as lighting the fireplace and cooking gisos. I wasn't thinking of (wiki-)categorizing them. I mention the "category" as this is the word used in the legislative decrees (ex. [2]). What I did is simply list the descriptions as given by the INE, in the List of populated places in Uruguay. Where it is stated poblado, I let it as populated place, though in the articles I sometimes play it by ear and give the terms "small town" or "village" with "populated place" in parenthesis. And btw, inspired by your Costa de Oro template, I did templates for all the coast: Template:Coast of Rocha, Template:Coast of Maldonado, Template:Coast of Colonia, etc. This way all the coastal geography is easy to find. Some of the official names may not be the popular ones. What helps a lot in this is the layer of photos on Google Earth, where I often get affirmation of the popular name of a location. Hi. Could you help out on the Joan Pujol Garcia article? He's a Catalan historical figure (although important in English and German history also - WWII), so we'd like to:

• Get some info from the Catalan version of the article, which is rather more complete (whereas the Spanish version actually needs updating from either the Catalan version or the English one)
• Have his name (Catalan pronunciation, of course) in IPA at the start of the article

Well, I had asked (or had you asked for me?) for an admin to accept me using AWB in the Catalan wikipedia, but nothing even came out of it. Bots can't do this work unless you build a database (I would think) and even so they might make mistakes. The closest to a "database" is the List of populated places in Uruguay. I am still updating it. But some places have changed from the previous version.

Another thing to be especially carefull is that in Canelones they have named the municipios with the same name as the main cities and towns, and numbers are different. I had to add a second definition to these places (see Salinas, Uruguay for an example). There is not much to say to start articles for the municipios, like Salinas (municipality), and as I hear all this system might just evaporate if it is not implemented throughout Uruguay. I forgot to say, I have communicated with Revista Raices and told them the problem we had with losing the refs every time they moved their URL, so now they have fixed it and we can use their articles as refs for the Barrios of Montevideo (in the Spanish wikipedia too). I started by updating population in Lavalleja Depertment in the Catalan wikipedia. I had to also update the template to take in the 2004 data. But I will not extend to other language wikis.
