Hi Liz I saw that you were a arbcom clerk and I wanted to reach out to you for some advice if you are available or if you can point me into the right direction. A Nigerian contributor just wants to expand Nigerian related content on wikipedia. I'd like to show you
this website. They are neither being Paid by the website or anyone else for this. It is completely a volunteer effort. This does bring however some concerns. Such as contributor contributions and the related copyrights. Nigeria is a English speaking country and with facebook expanding internet access thru
internet.org and wikimedia foundation trying to help also thru
Wikipedia Zero it's refreshing to me to see an effort like this.

Wikidata weekly summary #242
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
This week, most of the developers are at the
Dev Summit hacking stuff and doing great things!
Continued working on "federation" – support for multiple Wikibase repositories (
phab:T76007)
New dimensions for unit conversion in the query service (
phab:T150881)
Fixed a timing issue that can happen when using the property suggester (
phab:T115267)
Still investigating an issue in which the "save" button stays disabled, as
reported in December
We may remove the sliding animation when using the date, geo, monolingual, and quantity experts (
gerrit:330145). The preview popup may now cover parts of the page. Please try it at
wikidata.beta.wmflabs.org and tell us what you think on
our contact page.
Attended the Wikimedia Developer Summit to talk about a lot of things (including editing Wikidata from Wikipedia directly, back-end work for structured data support for Commons - specifically Multi Content Revisions, ideas for improvements to the query service)
Final touches to get ArticlePlaceholder pages ready for search engine indexing
Continued working on "federation" – support for multiple Wikibase repositories (
phab:T76007)
Clickable prototype for
client editing is finally in the works!
Coordinates on Russian Wikipedia now link to maps generated with the
Kartographer extension. The map includes the location outline, if that object exists in OpenStreetMap (OSM) with a corresponding Wikidata ID (ways and relations only, not nodes). Example:
w:ru:Зальцбург (click coordinates in the upper right corner, or in the infobox on the side). If you create a Wikidata item about a specific administrative area, building, or other physical individual object which appears on maps, then please add the Wikidata ID to the relevant object in OSM, using
key:wikidata= (here's
how to contribute to OSM).
QuickStatements V2 can now run your commands in the background, no need to keep the browser tab open anymore
An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect
Wikipedia:Defunct WikiProject Wikipedia/Members. Since you had some involvement with the Wikipedia:Defunct WikiProject Wikipedia/Members redirect, you might want to participate in
the redirect discussion if you have not already done so.

Wikidata weekly summary #245
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
Following
an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.
Technical news
When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (
T34950)
Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an
RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (
T156448)
The Foundation has
announced a new
community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.
JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.
When posting a link to an item to social networks and on messenger apps that show previews the previews will now be nicer and show an image. (
phabricator:T51859)
The Cebuano and Swedish wikis have a lot of bot-created content which is unconnected to other wiki articles. A good way to tackle that problem is by
checking constraint violations for property
GeoNames ID.
I've been gone for quite a while, a combination of an unexpected cross-country move (I'm on the West Coast now) and a diagnosis of cancer at the beginning of the summer. Plus, I was pretty caught up in the election and I thought it was best to stay away from the temptation of editing Wikipedia articles when emotions were so heated on all sides. I think I've got those strong feelings under control and since my cancer treatment finished up in January, I thought I'd make my way back to Wikipedia and dip my toe into the pool. I doubt I'll go back to my old level of activity but I'd like to help out where I can.
I hope anyone passing by is having a good 2017 so far or that you have at least found a way for life to be tolerable until happiness returns to your life.
Ambiguously yours,
LizRead!Talk! 23:15, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
In the same vein, happy to see you back but very sorry to hear of your health problems. I hope the treatments went tolerably well, with best wishes for a full recovery. Maybe declaring a total ban on all oncogenes will make you great again. ;)—

Liz - I'm so happy to see you again! I've occasionally been checking your contribs to see if you'd come back! I hope that you're doing well despite the recent hardship going on in your life. Moving is stressful, and your recent health diagnosis on top of it has definitely got to be both physically and emotionally draining. Please know that you're in my thoughts and that I miss having you around. When you're up to it, leave me a message and say hello! I'd definitely like to chat with you, shake your hand again, and catch up. Stay strong, look forward, know that you're valuable and loved, and that you have people here that are thinking about you. While I definitely miss having you around and saying hi to you and look forward to seeing you return, I hope that (should you decide to do so) you do so when you're ready, and when you feel that the time is right. There is no deadline here; I've only managed to light a small percentage of the project on fire while you've been away, and there will certainly be plenty of fun things that need to get done... come back when you're ready. Wishing you all the best --

Thanks,

I enjoyed working on the project for a few years but it wears down yourself being in conflict all of the time. I have to find some way to contribute in a less confronational atmosphere.

So glad to see you check in, I missed you too. Hopefully you can take comfort that cancer isn't the death sentence it once was. I have a gal friend who has been cancer-free for years, after catching it in time and getting treatment. Washington DC is certainly "interesting" these days. I'm thankful that the Supreme Court can still stand up to Trump. Too bad the Dems shot themselves in the foot, and the DNC would rather have Trump in charge than Bernie.

I also hate to hear we no longer have you in the NYC area :( We all at Wikimedia NYC will miss you too, but I'm sure your new home is a step up. Take care and hope to see you around more on the wiki, if not just to drop a note that you're well

User:MusikAnimal, you won't believe how much I missed NY/NJ here! I'm surrounded by people who adore the Northwest and I try to be polite but I miss the Northeast. The highs are higher there and the lows are lower. It is very pleasant here but I miss being close to the action. I read a review of a NYC play or conference and think, "I should go to that" but I'm now 3,000 miles away. Still, I can't knock Portland, it's a very cool town, very liveable, just not quite as exciting. And I will miss Wikipedia NYC conferences which have added so much to my life.

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located
here. Thanks to all who took part.
January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).
February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining
March 2016 backlog and
January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.
Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!
Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the
Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."
Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.
Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.
Making final fixes to initial version of Federation (needed to be able to use Wikidata items and properties to describe media on Commons in the future)
More work on baseline for Lexeme entity type for Wiktionary support
Wikidata Query Service got additional servers, the data has been reloaded to fix a number of issues caused by missed updates and an increase of the time-out of 30s is being looked into.
You can now make your
Harvest Templates tasks run automatically. After you have generated a permalink to your task, add &run= to the url. When you open it next time, it will load and then run automatically. Alternatively, you can use &load= which will only prepare the task for running.
Continued to finalize the initial version of Federation (needed to be able to use Wikidata items and properties to describe media on Commons in the future)
More work on baseline for Lexeme entity type for Wiktionary support
And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:
Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article
Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.
The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by
Vivvt and
The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and
MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN.
Carbrera and
Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and
Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.
So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on
Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on
Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from

Your assistance please...
You speedy deleted an article on
Hilary Brown, with the cryptic summary "multiple reasons".
In 2015 The New York Times published an article on The rise of the female TV war correspondent as global celebrity, which explicitly named women they considered the 16 15 most notable female war correspondents. As you can see, from the list below, the Hilary Brown article is the only red-link.
So, you could please spell out what the "multiple reasons" were? Unless the article never had a version that can't be userified, because they were all copyright violations, could you please userify this article to

Thanks
NeilN. Now that I have had a chance to look at it, that speedy deletion was a real head-scratcher for me. I asked nominator
Nicky mathew to explain their concerns, in case I was missing something. NM applied an A7 -- which is not supposed to be used when nominators want to dispute the article's claims of notability. The article NM nominated explicitly stated Brown was an award winning journalist. That is an assertion of notability. I wonder why
Liz didn't decline that speedy deletion criteria?
NM's {{G11}}? I can't help wondering whether NM simply didn't realize that Brown was one of the very most admired ground-breaking female journalists of the late 20th Century? I wonder why Liz endorsed that criteria.
Surely even a nomination for CSD requires compliance with
WP:BEFORE, both on the part of the nominator, and by the administrator who endorses or declines that speedy request?
Geo Swan (
talk) 22:10, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
@
Geo Swan: With respect to Liz, I would have declined that speedy. However all speedies do not require a
WP:BEFORE. For example, if this article was written using hopelessly promotional language ("Hilary Brown, one of the greatest journalists of her generation is now on a lecture tour. See her at...") then it could be speedy deleted without consideration to notability and
restarted. --

Deleting such categories will not stop the template filling them up and as the category is no longer hidden it will appear in red in article space as a red categories at the bottom of articles.
By their nature such hidden maintenance templates will often be empty perhaps for a long time, but that is no reason to delete them particularly when you do not inform the editors of the category or put a message on the template talk page.
You used "Requesting speedy deletion ([[CSD
C1]) to make the deletion request yet that deletion states "This does not apply to project categories that by their nature may become empty on occasion".
It goes on to say "Place {{
Empty category}} at the top of the page to prevent such categories from being deleted." Why did you not do that instead of putting them up for speedy deletion? Because I noticed that on the 23 April last year you made the following edit:
Then in the next three minutes you user TW to tag 7 categories for deleting including these two in the same minute:
13:17, 23 April 2016 (diff | hist) . . (+192) . . User:Liz/CSD log (Logging speedy deletion nomination of Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia with a Wikisource reference. (TW))
13:17, 23 April 2016 (diff | hist) . . (+195) . . User:Liz/CSD log (Logging speedy deletion nomination of Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia without a Wikisource reference. (TW))
It is about asking for a block to be removed. Your edit reads "
Okay, I made a mistake. Give me a second chance and I promise if you block me again, I won't contest it
" but your edit summary reads " This is a bad unblock request I've seen several times (basically, "I don't deserve this block but if I get another one in the future, I'll have deserved it"))"
Your edit summary doesn't reflect your edit. In your edit, the hypothetical user is saying that he/she made a mistake but your edit summary is implying that they did not make mistake (I don't deserve this block).
Just considering only your edit and not your edit summary, if there is a confession ("Okay I made a mistake"), I would think this is a positive self analysis. I then see that the second part "I won't contest it (again)" as a statement that this person will defer to your judgement if there is a further disagreement when or if a re-block occurs after misconduct.
I do not want to edit your quote but perhaps it is better written as "Okay, I dispute that I made a mistake. Give me a second chance and I promise if you ....."
This issue is not very interesting to me but it did catch my eye in a philosophical way. Any comments are welcomed. Thank you.

Wikidata weekly summary #257
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3.
YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:
Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
Other contestants who scored over 400 points were
Freikorp,
Carbrera, and
Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.
Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and
MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN.
Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and
Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.
So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on
Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on
Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from
Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

Wikidata weekly summary #258
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
An RfC has clarified that
user categories should be emptied upon deletion, but redlinked user categories should not be removed if re-added by the user.
Discussions are ongoing regarding proposed changes to the COI policy. Changes so far have included
clarification that adding a link on a Wikipedia forum to a job posting is not a violation of the
harassment policy.
There is a new
tool for adding archives to dead links. Administrators are able to restrict
other user's ability to use the tool, and have additional permissions when changing URL and domain data.
Following
an RfC, the
editing restrictions page is now split into a list of active restrictions and an
archive of those that are old or on inactive accounts. Make sure to check both pages if searching for a restriction.
Worked more on support for lexicographical data (specifically support for lexicographic category and statements on forms)
Dealt with issues after the deployment of automatic interwiki links for Wiktionary
Worked on constraint violation user script based on your feedback (improving messages to make it more understandable, layout, etc)
Add support for the following new language codes for monolingual text properties: brx, chn, cop, gez, quc, kjh, nr (will become available in a few days)
The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (
User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The event requires pre-registration. To register, 1) please
sign-up with Eventbrite via The Met's website and 2) add your Wikipedia username to the
#Participants on the wikimeetup page. Please check-in with museum staff when you arrive at the Thomas J. Watson Library within the museum.
You are invited to join the
Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening
salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at
Babycastles gallery by 14th Street /
Union Square in Manhattan.
Topics this month include the
TED wikiproject, the
Met wikiproject, and encouraging
free video on Wikimedia Commons!
We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants.
We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming
edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.
We welcome the participation of our friends from the
Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.
After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!
7:00pm - 9:00 pm at
Babycastles gallery, 137 West 14th Street
We especially encourage folks to add your
5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --

An
RfC proposing an off-wiki
LTA database has been closed. The proposal was broadly supported, with further discussion required regarding what to do with the existing LTA database and defining access requirements. Such a tool/database formed part of the
Community health initiative's successful
grant proposal.
Some
clarifications have been made to the
community banning and
unblocking policies that effectively sync them with current practice. Specifically, the community has reached a consensus that when blocking a user at
WP:AN or
WP:ANI, it is considered a "community sanction", and administrators cannot unblock unilaterally if the user has not successfully
appealed the sanction to the community.

Join us for an evening of social Wikipedia editing at the
Museum of Modern Art Library's third annual Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to LGBT art, culture and history.
All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.
Themes for this event include art related to HIV/AIDS activism and on LGBTQ artists of the African Diaspora as part of the Black Lunch Table project.
Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.
Due the necessary time for people to get visas (about 3 months), we changed the deadline for the scholarship applications. You can
apply for a scholarship before July 16th. We will then make sure that the applicants receive a response on July 25th.
Thank you for earlier affirming interactions. See User:Leprof_7272 page for details if interested. Bonne chance. Le Prof

Wikidata weekly summary #266
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year.
Coemgenus and
Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.
Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by
MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles.
PanagiotisZois and
SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles.
Carbrera led the GA score with 10,
Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and
MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.
As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).
If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on
Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on
Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from
