Ahoy, Captain Eek!! Coming alongside. request permission to come board, Captain!! If ye be willing, perhaps we might repair aft, for a wee bit of grog?
I have a few items that I have been working on. I have been trying to get some basic feedback on them, but so far I haven't been able to get much reply. I was wondering if you might be inclined to give me some feedback, if I post the items here? I just wanted to ask in advance, as I have asked for this from some others, and not gotten much reply. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts that you may have. Please feel free to let me know. thanks! --- Sm8900 ( talk) 🌍 18:11, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

It also keeps him as a valuable contributor. Really? Valuable in what way? The silk glove treatment of the Timwi case is an odd contrast to the previous ArbCom's lack of interest in keeping RexxS, an actually extremely valuable and dedicated contributor. You were a member of that ArbCom as well — indeed you were one of the drafting arbs for the RexxS case — and I remember for example your egregious assumption of bad faith here. "They were there more for the power than our mission, among other failings". Yes, I know you struck that (good) while pretending it had never been about RexxS at all (ridiculous, you only have to read it). This user still misses RexxS. Do you have any regrets? Bishonen | tålk 09:18, 8 February 2022 (UTC).
we should be more open to passing restrictions than just desysopping. When a lesser sanction would work, we should take it.Desysopping should be the last resort, and I just don't think we're there with the Timwi case. Nor did I think we were there with the Rexx case. I was quite supportive of providing an alternative path to Rexx, as I am with Timwi, and as I will with other admins who come before us.
I will make sure to edit cautiously and I appreciate the offer of guidance and the WP:TEA house. Really appreciate this second chance. Desertambition ( talk) 03:01, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello CaptainEek, I do not understand why you removed the tags for the article. The article still seems to be written like an advertisement and actively downplays the fact that it is a white nationalist settlement. Editors also refused to get consensus for controversial edits. There was hardly a "compromise" it was one sentence and everything else was reverted without discussion or consensus. I do feel those tags are still warranted. And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hi, Captain Eek! First, two confessions: (1) I'm more of a beginner on Wikipedia, so please forgive any misstep in this process; (2) I know Aaron Rasmussen, co-founder of Masterclass, so I've had an interest in tracking that page. I'm honestly unsure about where else to flag this problem, so I thought the editor(?). Please let me know where I can flag a serious concern I have with the neutrality of that section. Hi, although I know you can't speak for the Committee, I thought you nonetheless might be able to help. This started because I noticed this thread at ANI. I went to the Talk page and saw that Doug Weller had recently posted a DS notice on the Talk page. According to the case, "Standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all pages related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, broadly construed." As I interpret that statement, that would indeed cover all articles, including ones about movies, actors, songs, and so on. Yet, I thought that DS in these areas, just like in the Israeli-Palistianian case, applies only to articles about conflicts. Am I missing something? Thanks.-- Bbb23 ( talk) 14:00, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
I checked a few Donald footnotes at random, and, as I expected, they're the same in the hardback edition (although all the information in the sentence accompanying fn2 is on p. 22). Even if the pages didn't line up, it's not important enough to have two versions in all the footnotes. At most, we could put "(1996) [1995]," in the bibliography, but I wouldn't bother even with that; I'll leave it to you. Maurice Magnus ( talk) 23:47, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! and lastly, in the end, I didn't really obtain another mentor for myself. Hello CaptainEek,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 810 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 856 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself
here.

Hi Cap'n, need your help with some trolls. I am a board member of Atheist Alliance International (you can confirm this here), and a group of bad actors are trying to damage the organization reputation (John Hamill and his Free thought Prophet podcast) and continue to vandalize our page. Yesterday I updated the Criticisms section, and one their little minions, Martin C Boers, undid all the changes. A check of Hamill's twitter profile will confirm Boers is one of his sycophants. May I please request this article be locked to prevent them from continuously tampering with it: https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Atheist_Alliance_International&action=history

@ Sylvesterjay: Well seeing as you have a conflict of interest, you shouldn't be directly editing it anyway. Frankly, both of your edits there aren't great. Citing to the AAI bylaws is not using reliable sources and is just trying to win a petty grudge. I won't lock the article, because you don't WP:OWN the article. I suggest talking it out with Boer. Then if that doesn't work you can ask me again. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! ⚓ 15:50, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

hi. one quick question, how are the new editors who are posting questions on this page, finding their way here? is it via the Teahouse, or the Help Desk? I truly don't know where any link to your user talk page is posted for offering help to newcomers, so i would simply like to clarify. thanks for all your work!! Hello CaptainEek,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000 [a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size. [b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
There is a new template available, {{
NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 11614 articles, as of 20:00, 22 June 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

The main issues that need support at NPP are:
These are quite a few things that urgently need to be done, but as long as nobody from NPP is prepared to coordinate it, nothing much will happen. Nevertheless, IMO they are issues to decided locally by the NPP/AfC volunteers directly and not by Arbcom members and/or users who have no practical experience in those areas. A pragmatic approach is what is now needed and not some antiquated Wikipedia ideology or Arbcom power-thrusting. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง ( talk) 08:27, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! I tried to do that while I was editing it too, but couldn't figure it out (which I see you're experiencing based on your edit summary). If you do figure out why it's where it is and not where it's listed/supposed to be and/or how to fix it, can you let me know?

Hi, Why you changed to Democratic backsliding in Ethiopia when it talks about Abiy Ahmed. The Supermind ( talk) 07:02, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
So, should I absorb Abiy Ahmed in concised section and add topic about the previous government to fit with the title of "Democratic backsliding in Ethiopia"? The Supermind ( talk) 07:34, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
You tagged the Article as "Advert". I consider the tag as inappropriate and your tagging without explanation less then helpful. I am an independent German journalist and it took considerable efforts to write this article. The CAI is a non-commercial association creating an open standard. The topic is complex and not easy to explain. Two thirds of the article cover an explanation of the way the standard works. So: Where did you discover advertising content? Robertseetzen ( talk) 10:44, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Simply put, the CAI standard enables a person to make sound decisions about what content to trust. Without reliable, cryptographically secured statements about the origin of a file, such decisions are also possible and even commonplace, but they are then often made without a robust foundation.It looks like this sentence is trying to promote the CAI, instead of just explaining what it is in a neutral fashion. Wording like "Simply put", "sound decisions", "robust foundation", that's all ad-speak. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! ⚓ 18:23, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Regarding Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification and Amendment/Archive 121#Amendment request: Motion: Crouch, Swale (January 2022) you stated that I should start a new RFC in a better location but Wikipedia talk:WikiProject England/Parishes RfC seems though not well participated to have reached a reasonable consensus namely:
The requirement that I can only appeal the restrictions is far far far to infrequent, even if we were only allow 1 appeal every 6 months or year it would be far more appropriate if the number of articles (such as parishes only) could be reviewed more like ever 2 weeks or so (at least in the beginning) probably by an arbitrator or other admin. I we started at say 1 parish a week (in addition to my 1 article a month on anything) and gradually increase the number of parishes ever few weeks I could gradually get the remaining ones missing with little risk of problems.
You also opposed to going from 1 article a week through AFC to 1 article a month without AFC due to the new restriction allowing me to create less content, if you felt this why didn't you instead suggest a motion of allowing me to create 1 article a week without AFC? As Primefac said "While I think it would most definitely benefit Crouch, Swale when they make their inevitable appeal next year to have an actual, well-attended and clear RFC that states whether what they are doing is acceptable to the community or not, I cannot deny that they have held to their restriction and have been doing a good job of writing reasonable articles. I do not understand why they are looking for fewer articles written per year as their relaxation, but if that is what they want that is what they will apparently get.". Crouch, Swale ( talk) 17:49, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
Would this work? What is the likelihood of problems and wouldn't point 3 be enough to deal with that. Could you please consider this? If every 2 weeks is too frequent or not frequent enough it could be a different time, though reviewing would likely be nothing more than checking some or all of the articles for problems and checking my talk page. If there are any other things that you think would be helpful you can suggest them. Crouch, Swale ( talk) 16:24, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
Handwaving towards WP:GEOLAND or WP:NPLACE don't solve this specific consensus that the articles shouldn't be mass created.But regardless, you might be talking to the wrong Arb. It seems the majority of arbs are favorable to changing your sanctions, but I am not. I am generally uninterested until you show that the underlying issue is fixed.
