The December 2004 North American storm complex was a strong Pineapple Express winter storm that developed from the combination of a moderate El Niño episode, and an atmospheric river that opened from near Hawaii. The storm shattered several rainfall records across California and other western states. The storm dropped a maximum of 10 inches of rain in Los Angeles and caused flooding across many other parts of the Southwest.
