how about replacing the WORD "dramaticized" with "called attention" or something to that effect? -keremm

There's recently been some back-and-forth edits to the article over whether to characterize the official Democratic Party of Mississippi in the 1960s as "white-only" or "white-controlled/dominated." Neither are wrong, but I think "white-only" is more accurate. When you registered to vote in Mississippi of that era (as with other Deep South states) you were not able to register as a member of a particular party. There was no place on the registration application to select party preference. Party membership was entirely controlled by the party apparatus who determined who was, and who was not, a member for the purposes of running for office, participating in party meetings and caucuses, and voting in the party's primary election. In Mississippi of that time, the Democratic Party rejected blacks and other nonwhites from membership. Party primaries were "white-only," African-Americans who attempted to vote in the Democratic primary had their ballots set aside and rejected. Blacks who tried to participate in party meetings were barred at the door. It may be that there were some blacks or other nonwhites who agreed with Democratic Party principles or voted for Democratic candidates, but since they were not allowed to participate in party activities at any level, they were not members of the party in any practical sense Brucehartford ( talk) 19:17, 6 December 2010 (UTC) reply
