The Pop Music Portal

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. Rock and pop music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which pop became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible.

Identifying factors of pop music usually include repeated choruses and hooks, short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse–chorus structure), and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to. Much of pop music also borrows elements from other styles such as rock, urban, dance, Latin, and country. ( Full article...)

Cyrus in 2019

Miley Ray Cyrus ( /ˈmli ˈsrəs/ MY-lee SY-rəs; born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Regarded as a pop icon, she has been recognized for her evolving artistry and style, having been named as the "Teen Queen" of the 2000s. She is also cited as one of the few examples of a child star with a successful musical career as an adult. As the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, she emerged as a teen idol at age 13 as the lead character in the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana (2006–2011). As Hannah Montana, she achieved success on the Billboard charts with two number-one soundtracks and a US top-ten single.

Her solo career started with the US number-one pop rock albums Meet Miley Cyrus (2007) and Breakout (2008); featuring the top-ten singles " See You Again" and " 7 Things". The EP The Time of Our Lives (2009) reached number two in the US while its lead single " Party in the U.S.A." became one of the best-selling singles of all time in the country and was later certified thirteen-times platinum by the RIAA. The ballad " The Climb", also reached number four in the US. Trying to recalibrate her image, she explored dance-pop in Can't Be Tamed (2010), which received mixed reviews; however, its title track reached the top-ten in the US. Cyrus later signed with RCA Records and took a new artistic direction with the hip-hop and R&B-influenced Bangerz (2013). Her fifth chart-topping album, it yielded the singles " We Can't Stop" and her first Billboard Hot 100 number-one " Wrecking Ball". She then dabbled in experimental styles on Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015), embraced country pop on Younger Now (2017) and ventured into rock and synth-pop on Plastic Hearts (2020). After signing with Columbia Records in 2021, Cyrus released Endless Summer Vacation (2023). Its lead single " Flowers" set various records and marked her second US number-one. The song won two Grammy Awards including Record of the Year, and the album was nominated for Album of the Year. ( Full article...)

North is the third and final studio album by American rock band Something Corporate. Near the beginning of the writing process for the album, vocalist and pianist Andrew McMahon and guitarist Josh Partington wanted it to "sound like a winter album", in contrast to their second album Leaving Through the Window (2002) which they viewed as a "summer album". After losing focus through constant touring, the group decided to record an album in Seattle, Washington. Recording took place at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle with producer Jim Wirt in May 2003. After relocating to Los Angeles, California, further tracking was done at 4th Street Recording in Santa Monica.

Following North's announcement in July 2003, the band went on tour supporting 311 and Good Charlotte. Preceded by the single "Space" in September, the album was released on October 21 through Geffen and Drive-Thru Records. The band subsequently went on a headlining United States tour from October to December. In February 2004, guitarist William Tell left the band and was replaced by Bobby Anderson of the band River City High. Preceded by second single "Ruthless", the group co-headlined a US tour with Yellowcard in March and April. ( Full article...)

" The Edge of Glory" is a song by American singer Lady Gaga from her second studio album, Born This Way (2011). The song was released on May 9, 2011, as the album's third single. Initially released as one of two promotional singles for Born This Way, it shortly became a single following its success in digital outlets worldwide. The song was written and produced by Gaga and Fernando Garibay, and is a pop, electro-rock, and disco song that speaks of the last moments of life. According to Gaga, lyrical inspiration came from the death of her grandfather, who died in September 2010. Along with a saxophone solo played by Clarence Clemons, the melody of the song resembles much of the musical works of Bruce Springsteen, and contains several qualities similar to that of 1980s adult contemporary musical works.

"The Edge of Glory" received critical acclaim, with many reviewers deeming it as an album highlight. Much of the praise went to the song's chorus and the musical production. Reviewers also complimented Gaga's vocals, describing it as "soulful". The song was a commercial success worldwide, charting in the top 10 in several major music markets, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Gaga's tenth consecutive top-10 single in the United States. ( Full article...)
