Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Would anyone like to join me in starting a WikiProject Plants Chaparall and Fire Task Force, perhaps to be a joint project with the Fire Service project? Once there are five names above, we can start our task list. E.g., task 1- photo and upload to wikimedia commons images of all phases of chaparral fire cycle, and all seasonal phases and coloration changes (colors now being researched at the Stanford Department of Plant Biology Carnegie Institute for remote identification of specimens and their species), task 2 - make illustrations of chaparral anatomy and morphology across species which "makes it chaparral".

I am working with UCSC's Arboretum director (and California Native Plant Society president) on a donation to them of a 10 acre real estate parcel with a approx 3500 foot elevation Sierra Azul maritime chaparral stand on it and surrounding it (his group's specialy), a riparian corridore through it fed by an artesian spring with the closest watershed being Yosimite (and a view of half dome in the far distance from the parcel) and will be going hiking in Griffith Park with Richard Halsey and some Hollywoodsters next time he is in Hollywood, if there are any super-esoteric questions you want me to hit them up on re maritime chaparral, Santa Monica Mountain Chaparral, or San Diego area chaparral, or if you want to join us and add your expertise. Looks like someone is systematically emptying subcategories in Category:Fires by year. Can some with more knowledge look into this and see it real fires are being removed from the subcategories? Hi all, I don't know if any of you have seen this RM about the differing destinations of WP:FIRE and WP:Fire, but an IP suggested your project would be a better destination for these redirects than WikiProject Fire Protection, which the former currently redirects. Since that project is semi-active, I think I agree. Does it make sense for you to merge with the project? Hello. I was wondering if anyone in this project might be against an update of the Template:Infobox wildfire layout? No content would be changed, it would just be a conversion from the current raw wikitable-based coding to employ the metatemplate used by Template:Infobox. This results in a much neater and more compact infobox as you can check in this before and after examples. Just trying to do some cleanup. I just redid the {{ infobox fire department}} and would love some feedback on the new format. I am also looking into cleaning up the pages for different types of fire apparatus. For example, I think that Brush Truck & Wildland fire engine should be merged. At the very least both need some cleanup. I also wanted to try and clean up the {{ Fire fighting}} template to include more stuff. Any feedback, help or ideas? Just some initial thoughts: I have only ever heard of "brush trucks" and have never heard the term "wildland fire engine". This is coming from a municipal firefighter. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the subject, but there are essentially two different worlds in American firefighting - wildland and structural. The federal government mainly covers the wildland side, and city fire departments cover the structural side. However, sometimes city firefighters have to fight early stage wildfires before the federal firefighters arrive. During this intial stage, a brush truck is used. These are relatively small, nimble vehicles with a small amount of water reserve. The federal firefighters arrive and use "wildland fire engines". These vehicles are larger and have a increased water supply for the extended period which they will be fighting the wildfire.

I think a merger would be beneficial, perhaps under the title Wildland Firefighting Apparatuses. This could include both types of vehicles, and should draw a clear distinction between the two.

I need some additional eyes on the article May 2014 San Diego County wildfires and its talk page. This is a heavily-viewed article about a current wildfire situation, but there only appear to be two of us watching it. I particularly need help with a content dispute, discussed at the talk page. The other editor insists on adding "arson" to the "ignition sources" in the infobox, even though the article contains no mention of arson, and no reliable or official source has claimed that any of these dozen or so fires were started by arson. I think it's important that we get this right but I don't want to edit war. Someone knowledgeable please take a look, evaluate the evidence and arguments, and weigh in. One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

Both of these fires need coverage, while the first was a minor inconvenience it did bring up issues that were still unresolved at the time of the 2008 fire. The grease fire page recommends that a grease fire "be put out by smothering it with a fabric like material." I think it should be revised to stress that the best way to put out a grease fire is to cover it with a lid, but I am not an expert on fire safety. I don't want people to burn their house down because they start throwing t-shirts on grease fires. Does anyone have an authoritative citation on this, perhaps a fire safety manual? Thanks. The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{ Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Hi there! Coming from editing on U.S. National Register of Historic Places articles, I've taken on the task of building a List of fire stations. So far I have compiled all the items within Category:Fire stations world-wide, plus I added a lot more U.S. historic ones that are redlinks, from my reviewing a National Register database for likely suspects based on the places' names. I'm proceeding to create articles for all the redlink ones.

There no doubt are notable historic firehouses within historic districts that I don't know about yet, and there must be architecturally significant modern firehouses in some places. Somewhat related to the new List of fire stations, please see also new List of firefighting monuments and memorials. This covers all current members of Category:Firefighting memorials, a category created by an edit of User:Johnbod back in 2012. The advantage of an explicit list is that it can include redlinks and photos and sources and more. It so far covers one redlink, for the national memorial on the topic in Ottawa, Canada, which surely deserves an article. I've just added generic parameters to {{ Infobox fire department}} that will enable more adaptable terminology to be used in the infobox for the variety of circumstances where the current parameter list doesn't suffice, without the need to extend the parameter list yet further for every new case. I have preserved the existing infobox structure in all respects and tested the changes thoroughly, so I am not expecting any problems with existing transclusions, but I would advise all watchers of this page to keep an eye out for issues.

I'd appreciate others running their eye over the updated documentation as well to be sure that it's quite clear how to use the new parameters and what the effects of implementing them will be. Our fire extinguisher article seems to be be specifically about portable equipment consisting of a container of fire-extinguishing agent. In the history section is a sentence about an 1872 invention of Thomas Martin, whose patent is titled "Improvement in fire-extinguishers". However, the invention it describes is instead a type of standpipe and related apparatus installed in a building--definitely not a personal-use portable tank. Various popular-press websites associate him with the origination of the modern "fire extinguisher" type of equipment. As the story gets passed along, even a successive chain of well-meaning editorial changes and modern use of phrases whose meaning was different long ago might lead to false claims. This isn't my field of expertise...could someone else help disengangle the meaning vs wording and make sure we are not mis-explaining it? DMacks ( talk) 15:40, 10 February 2021 (UTC) reply

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith " Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith " Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{ cite web}}, {{ cite journal}} and {{ doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Hello to any WikiProject participants 🙂 As the creator of a few firefighting-related articles, it is a shame Wikipedia at the moment has no active firefighting WikiProject, so I would like to change that. I am proposing to merge the currently defunct Fire Service and Fire Protection WikiProjects into one encompassing WikiProject Firefighting. I am prepared to do all the technical work to make this merge happen, but I wanted to ask first if there was any opposition to the change. I feel a united firefighting WikiProject would better centralize discussion on the topic, and would appeal to a larger/more active community. Any feedback is appreciated, and if none is received on this or the WikiProject Fire Protection talk pages, the merge will go through in one week. Cheers!
