Would this be the right term? I made an article for
Ben Judd (producer), and I used that phrase to describe him, while linking to
Americans in Japan. He's lived in Japan since 2001, is a legal citizen, speaks the language, and only occasionally makes business trips to America.

I am not sure the current biography shows that the subject is notable per Wikipedia standards, but to respond to your question: Is there any reference to indicate that he has actually taken Japanese citizenship? Even among American permanent residents in Japan that is quite rare, as Japan does not allow dual citizenship for adults.
Dekimasuよ! 17:43, 17 July 2018 (UTC)reply
Well, he's certainly interviewed and talked about by the gaming press. All the articles cited as RS for video games, as they're major news sites, and this is pretty standard for gaming related articles. He and his company Dangen even got a profile in the
Japan Times. I further discuss this at
Talk:Ben_Judd_(producer)#Notability.
Harizotoh9 (

I'm not going out of my way to question the article's notability. I just have doubts. So, is there any source indicating that he is a Japanese citizen?
Dekimasuよ! 05:00, 18 July 2018 (UTC)reply
should there be an article on this Shinkansen attack June 9?
I would say no. We don't seem to have an article on the self-immolation that took place in 2015, which was covered by The New York Times and other world outlets. Perhaps a sentence or two at
Shinkansen#Safety record on these sorts of incidents could be added if necessary.
Dekimasuよ! 01:55, 15 June 2018 (UTC)reply
I would tend to agree that this probably could be mentioned within another article, but I'm not sure if there's enough to justify a stand-alone article per
WP:NCRIME. You have to be careful that this is not a case of
WP:NOTNEWS. Events like this tend to garner lots of media coverage when they happen, but you need to be aware of
WP:DELAY.
This and
this also got lots of media coverage at the time, but I don't think there are stand-alone articles about them. If you still feel there might be enough with this latest case to support an article, then maybe also asking at
WT:CRIME might be helpful. --

The answer is simple if it is notable yes of course.
Truthspeakerknows (
talk) 03:43, 4 July 2018 (UTC)reply
If there are at least 2-3 reliable sources discussing it in depth, then yes. Same for the self-immolation article. Anything that passes
WP:GNG should have an article. ···

I was listening to
this 7 year old podcast episode. They discuss the myth that Japan "gave up" firearms in the Edo period, and trace the myth back to a book by Noel Perrin that is roundly derided in academic circles. They also mention
this WP article and how often it cites the offending book. Naturally I had a look, and was surprised to see that this hadn't been fixed in 7 years. I don't have the background to judge whether the podcasters are right (although they seem better informed than Perrin), so I can't do it myself. I thought I'd leave a note here to see if anybody can pick this up.

Leftover WikiProject Japan/Assessment articles not assessed yet
WikiProject Japan/Assessment has some articles that weren't assessed. Goes back to at least 2015.

I know. I'm just thinking I may need some backup.

I've been chipping away at it when things are slow at work, but I could use your help. It was over 800 when I started a couple weeks ago, but now it's below 700. Everything before "J" is not an obvious (2-3 sentence) stub, so feel free to start at "A" and assess based on the criteria. Also I translated
Aguri Ōnishi and
Maria Sashide, so I'm planning on skipping those assessments. :)

@
Ominae: Just a head's up for you and anyone else who is interested in assessing articles: I've gone through the backlog and tagged everything that was either already tagged by another wikiproject or was obviously a stub. Please use the grading scale at
WP:Assess if you're assessing anything. Most seem to be "Start" or "C". A lot of what's left (about 300 articles) is
shogi related, and since I don't know much about shogi I'll probably go through them a lot more slowly than I have been, just to get things right. Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

Disambig links that don't look like disambig links
An IP
108.234.184.50 has been systematically removing Japanese text from articles, without any edit summary. This seems to be vandalism, and I wonder if something should be done about it.
Imaginatorium (
talk) 04:40, 26 July 2018 (UTC)reply
I wouldn't necessarily call it
vandalism per se, but maybe it's too
WP:BOLD. IP's been editing for less than a month, so probably
WP:AGF and try not to
WP:BITE. You can revert if you disagree with the change per
WP:BRD or per
MOS:JAPAN and leave an edit sum or user talk page message explaining why. If the IP is
WP:HERE, he/she will discuss; if
WP:NOTHERE, he/she will likely end up being warned/blocked by an admin for
WP:EW or
WP:DE. --
Marchjuly (

The IP has replied with "We don't need no foreign language", and expressed an intention to remove all native names from WP. This doesn't sound to me like an idea likely to carry consensus; I don't do edit warring, so I wonder on the best approach. Incidentally, almost all of the IP's edits were in this category, and have been almost univerally reverted.
Imaginatorium (
talk) 13:50, 26 July 2018 (UTC)reply
No it does not sound like consensus. This is either
WP:IDHT,
WP:DE,
WP:POINT or some combination of the three. You can probably revert, warn them (starting with {{uw-disruptive1}}) and then maybe {{uw-3RR}} if they engage in edit warring. Maybe even post something on the article talk pages after reverting just to show that you are willing to discuss. At some point, this kind of editor usually ends up at ANI/AN3 regardless of who files the report. If that's you, then at least you would've tried to resolve things per
WP:DR and are the one who is
WP:HERE. You can start getting all of your diffs ready though since you will need them if you do start an ANI/AN3 discussion. --
Marchjuly (
talk) 02:36, 27 July 2018 (UTC)reply
I see that you have already made your concerns known to the IP and that
Yunshui subsequently
warned them not to continue as before. Nothing really more for you or anyone else to do now, since the IP has been notified as to what they need to do if they disagree. If they go back to removing that content, they will likely be quickly blocked without even going to having to go to ANI/AN3. --

Amy Rose, an article that you or your project may be interested in, has been nominated for an individual good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the
reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article.

Japanese competitors to Wikipedia
Japanese Wikipedia is one of the largest. I wonder if there are no significant competitors to Wikipedia in Japan? For example, Korea, a country with comparable level of development, when controlled for population, uses Wikipedia much less (by half or more, depending on statistics). In Korea, people use Naver search engine which does not rank Wikipedia high, and has its own encyclopedia which instead comes up higher. I wonder if the use of search/encyclopedia in Japan is more similar to the West (i.e. people type queries in Google, and ja.wikipedia comes up as one of the top hits)? Can you think of any Japanese sites that people would turn to instead of Wikipedia? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus|
