Nominator's rationale These are so poorly-populated (never got off the ground) that it's unclear what they are intended to be. If they are intended to be user categories (users have earned the badge in question), then they fail

WP:SMALLCATS and all relevant pages are already in the parent so there's no need for a merge.

I agree. While birds are technically dinosaurs, almost no modern person would refer to a bird as a dinosaur, as it is almost always used to describe the ancient creatures, so one should really not be a subcategory of the other.
ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (
ᴛ) 08:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)reply
Your statement is akin to saying that "humans should not be a subcategory of primates" because they are not usually referred to in society as great apes. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and if the nominator realized that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia they'd pull this nomination.
Randy Kryn (

Oppose renaming, the category "Living dinosaurs" is valid, accurate, and encyclopedic. Keeping it counters the bias - as shown above - against the fact of birds being dinosaurs.
Randy Kryn (

@
Randy Kryn: I am simply making it match up with the article,
human-dinosaur coexistence, which the category is clearly about - not the idea of birds being living dinosaurs. The article
dinosaur does not go to a disambiguation page between ancient dinosaurs and modern birds, showing that the term is far less commonly used to describe birds. You may believe it should be used otherwise, but Wikipedia is not where to
WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS, you would have to convince the public.

Pppery: As said above, the category "Living dinosaurs in fiction" is ACTUALLY about humans existing alongside dinosaurs, i.e. dinosaurs "living" in the present day. It would be fine to keep under the more descriptive name, which would also include any instances of humans living alongside dinosaurs, a notable trope in fiction.
ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (
ᴛ) 13:22, 11 May 2023 (UTC)reply

Pppery: Fiction about dinosaurs can include fiction that takes place in the dinosaur era, or in worlds populated only by dinosaurs. It doesn't necessarily include humans in the story at all, or at least humans and dinosaurs side by side in the same setting.
ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (
ᴛ) 16:16, 11 May 2023 (UTC)reply
The Land Before Time franchise "features dinosaurs living in prehistoric times". I would also separate fiction where humans merely time travel to, or otherwise simply encounter dinosaurs, i.e.
65 (film), as not an example of human and dinosaur coexistence.
ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (
ᴛ) 17:13, 11 May 2023 (UTC)reply
OK. That makes sense. I guess there's really three different concepts: "Fiction about anthropomorphic dinosaurs", "Fiction about dinosaurs and time travel", and "fiction about human-dinosaur coexistence". It was not easy to see those concepts because of the incomplete diffusion and the fact that the third entry is more common than the other two, but they appear to be distinct enough to warrant separate categories.

I have an issue with your "set in the modern era" because it seems to indicate a different category scheme than what it actually is. Perhaps
Category:Fiction about modern-day dinosaurs would be more of a logical offshoot.
ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (
ᴛ) 11:28, 12 May 2023 (UTC)reply
Comment, the moves do not fit encyclopedic use of the term dinosaur and the articles mentioned are not about fiction. At present, birds are listed as "Living dinosaurs" and bird hunting is included in dinosaur hunting. The category "Living dinosaurs" appears as a subsection of the category "Dinosaur". Birds perfectly fit the category name, they are the first item listed at the disamb page
Living dinosaurs, and there is nothing broken here. The nominator seems to have confused other editors that the pages mentioned are only about fiction. Hopefully the closer will not be a drive-by closer but will actually study this discussion and the pages mentioned and, if so, will find that the category "Living dinosaur" should stay as is and includes other than fiction.
Randy Kryn (
talk) 11:54, 12 May 2023 (UTC)reply
The only content that would fit "living dinosaurs" literally is
Category:Birds but we do not need two categories for that,
Category:Birds in itself is sufficient. Modern-day birds are completely unrelated to fiction about prehistoric dinosaurs however.
Marcocapelle (
talk) 14:22, 12 May 2023 (UTC)reply
"Living dinosaurs" can refer to any number of things including birds. It's overly vague for a category and there is no real name to move it to where it would no longer be vague. We don't normally have categories named after disambiguation pages, it's just confusing.

No This is a "by country" tree, not a "by nationality / ethnicity" tree. Thai people can be political prisoners in Thailand, Turkey or Saudi Arabia. Not every Thai person who is a political prisoner, is in prison in Thailand.
Laurel Lodged (

The category as named by the original creator Thai political prisoners and per the first parent category Thai prisoners and detainees makes it clear that the original intention was for it to be a nationality category. This proposal is suggesting to change it to a country category, which is why it needs to be upmerged if the change is to be carried out. --
Paul_012 (

Reply how can we "move the prisoners to the correct tree and out of the wrong tree" when only one political prisoner tree exists? Did you mean to suggest that we should have two trees (i.e.
Category:Thai political prisoners and
Category:Political prisoners in Thailand)? If so, then the nomination should still proceed as few notable Thai political prisoners will be imprisoned outside Thailand. Plus those Chinese nationals who are political prisoners in Thailand. The nom should cater for the majority position.
Category:Thai political prisoners can then be recreated for those Thai poitical prisoners who are not detained in Thailand. See also

Procedural comment I have "Emigrants from Venezuala" on my watchlist so was advised then a CFD was added to the page. However, on clicking the "this category's entry" link, it brought me to a page where it was almost impossible to view the nomination. @
Oculi: has now made his addendum above more visible. So when I clicked the 170 categories, I eventually saw the detailed proposal. Is is procedurally acceptable for a nomination detail to remain entirely off-page on a talk page? Is that fair?
Laurel Lodged (

The advantage is that opiners do not have to scroll through 170+ lines to add their views, and has indeed been done many times before. It is true that this imposes upon an interested party the burden of clicking twice, but then so does a hidden (collapsed) sublist.

The collapsed list is the accepted norm. One would notice such a structure. It is quite unlikely that one would notice a link in a rather large wall of text. What makes this procedural lapse all the more egregious was the supercilious replies by the nominator to a GoodFaith query on his talk page

Category rename is borderline C2D-speedy, except that the "eponymous page" is a redirect to parent taxon
Pterophorinae rather than a separate article. Effects ~50 articles.
Template is an upmerged stub template, so the category it feeds into does not need renaming, just the template itself. Effects ~50 articles.
