Wikis Take Manhattan Next: Saturday September 27 This box: view •  talk •

WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City. The event is based on last year's Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, and has evolved to include StreetsWiki this year as well.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

• Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Spring 2008 (a description of the results, and the uploading party)
• Commons:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Gallery (our cool gallery)

WINNINGS? Prizes include a dinner for three with Wikipedia creator Jimmy Wales at Pure Food & Wine, gift certificates to Bicycle Habitiat and the LimeWire Store, and more!

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, September 27th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.

WHERE Participants can begin the hunt from either of two locations: one at Columbia University (at the sundial on college walk) and one at The Open Planning Project's West Village office. Everyone will end at The Open Planning Project:

Hi, I am curious why you added the {{ pp-semi}} template to the article 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The page is not semi-protected. That tag is normally added by an admin when the page is protected; if you see that is the case and the admin forgot, please go ahead and add it; but if you add it when the page is not actually protected, the tag will simply be removed (often by a bot). If you need to request page protection, post at WP:RPP. I don't really see a need for semi-protection at this point as vandalism has been relatively light. Hi, your are listed in WikiProject Civil Engineering and I wondered if you might want to weigh in a couple of requested moves?
An editor moved the text from Suspension bridge to Suspended deck bridge and now thinks that the article should land at Suspended-deck suspension bridge. That move discussion is here Talk:Suspended_deck_bridge#Requested_move.
The other move request is here Talk:Suspension_bridge_types#Requested_move which shows what the editor proposes to put into the Suspension bridge article.
The discussion has major consequences on the content of the main article on suspension bridges. The root questions: Is a suspended-deck suspension bridge the proper name for a typical suspension bridge? The prefix USS is not used untill a ship is commissioned, until then it is refered to as PCU (pre commissioning unit) The commisioning will be on November 7th 2009. Truly, I made some changes to the Tupolev Tu-324, and I wanted to take the time to explain them personally.\

One, the title needs to be of the primary variant. As far as I can tell from the Tupovlev website, ther Tu-324 and Tu-414 are two separate variants, so I've moved the page back to your original title,

Second, though you properly tagged the image you added as Fair-use, it is replaceable. There is one image of each variant on Commons, and I've added both of them to the article. I've also tagged the image for deletion, as it is replaceable with free imges (which are of better quality too!)

C, I found the images when I did a google search on "Tupolev Tu-324". TO my surprise, there were at least four articles on interwikis, and I've added them to the article. When you create an article from scratch, it's a good idea to check the other language wikipedias first. (I'm assuming you didn't because you didn't use the free images, and didnt list the interwikis in the aritcle.) The German WP in particular has an extensive aircraft selection; though it's not as comprehensive in scope as English WP, it often covers some articles we don't have yet, and covers some of the ones we do have in greater detail. Also, it or one of the other interwikis often has free images posted that we can use, especially if they are on Commons. They sometimes have more up-to-date sources, and many of those will be in English. It's a fairly easy thing to search for them, and they will often save a lot of time on research. One thing though: Don't translate the texts by computer, and post that in articles! If you read German or another language though, it can be another good timesaver, but make sure to cite your sources, as they often do not.

I'm not trying to be over-critical, as you did a good job getting this one started. I just wanted to give you some explanation for why I made the changes I did, and some help for the future. Keep up the good work! - BillCJ ( talk) 02:58, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{ di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. Wikis Take Manhattan Next: Saturday October 10 This box: view •  talk •

WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

• Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Fall 2008 (a description of the results, and the uploading party)
• Commons:Wikis Take Manhattan (our cool team galleries)
• Streetfilms: Wikis Take Manhattan (our awesome video)

WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.

WHERE Participants can begin the hunt from either of two locations: one at Columbia University (at the sundial on college walk) and one at The Open Planning Project's fantastic new event space nestled between Chinatown and SoHo. Everyone will end at The Open Planning Project:

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on RMS Georgic (1932). Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period. In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wiki-Conference NYC 2010, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia Ambassador Program and Wikipedia Academy, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the May meeting's minutes).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be ' Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying " WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!
