Well..the picture for the infobox in Madonna is Image:Madon1.JPG a free content image. Basically fair use/non-free content is only allowed when no free equivalent is available or could be created. With Rod Stewart a free content picture is definitely possible. Nevertheless a whole lot of articles still have non-free images which fail the non-free content criteria but slowly they will and are being removed. There is a discussion somewhere about album covers, probably on Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. Right now (although as I said, this is under discussion) it probably fulfills the criteria in the article Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, but not in the Ray Charles article. Plus it's not really comparable. A free image of that album is not available and will not be available until the copyright expires. A free image of Rod Stewart on the other hand is possible. No, it depends that Wikipedia in general has been extremely lax in enforcing the non-free content criteria. It's just too easy to google for an image, upload it and add it to the article instead of searching for a free content image, asking permission to release it under a free license etc. I am pretty sure that one day someone (doesn't matter if it will be an admin or not) will cleanup the Aerosmith article. Boy, that Madonna article has definately excessive fair use images and songs. If I feel like it I will clean it up one time. Regarding flickr. Yes, that's very annoying with flickr. With public they mean that everyone can view the image, not that it is released in the public domain. You also can hide your pictures and only invite users to watch your images. There is no blanket ban on album covers, which won't happen anyway. Although it might be more stricter, only have an album cover when you discuss the album cover. Compare the discussion of the cover in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band article with the Thankful (Kelly Clarkson album) article . In general with non-free images they have to be used sparingly. They have to fulfil all of the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. In the Led Zeppelin article I don't think they do. Especially criteria #1 and #8. Garion96 (talk) 10:23, 10 June 2007 (UTC) reply

If you want an image to be deleted and it is not a copyright violation, please list it at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion rather than adding a speedy tag. Speedy deletion only applies to a limited number of situations, and the fact that an image is unused is not one of them.

I actually agree with you, I think flag icons are useful - and yes they should be discussed before being deleted - I would not have deleted if user 156.34.142.110 had not given the impression that this was the RULE - as I have now since found out it is NOT the rule, I shall cease amending flag icons and will keep an eye out for others deleting them unnecessarily - I'm really not interested in being drawn into an editing war with 156.34.142.110. I am, for the most part, a vandal hunter. If I missed any cruft then I apologise for hasty editing and giving you the wrong impression. My nickname is "Libs".. a name given to me be several Wiki-administrators.(reason: I am a Librarian) Myself and my co-workers are all Wikipedia editors. I am probably the most prolific among our group. My focus is, although not completely limited to, music related articles. I was, at one time, a logged editor with over 20000 edits. I was prompted over a dozen times to allow my name to stand as a Wikipedia Admin. I declined all nomination attempts. I am not here for personal glory... just positive contribution, community and concensus. Why am I an anon? A long time ago I began to notice a growing "anti-anon" movement within the project. I did not agree with this because, as a vandal hunter, I certainly saw just as much "red-link login" vandalism as I did IP vandalism. Wikipedia was built on the contributions of anonymous editors. I decided I wanted to re-birth a trust in anonymous editing and try and foster "IP integrity" within the WIkipedia community. I walked away from my login account. And, after over 20000 edits as an anon, hopefully I have accomplished just that. My IP tends to float as I walk around the University where I work. But when I am at my desk(the IP you've been messaging) my IP is static. And that IP has been awarded several barnstars for 156.34 contributions. Not many anonymous editors get those so I am humbled for the recognition my 156.34 colleagues and I have received. If you have any questions feel free to direct them my way. Can I ask that you refrain from over-personalising our stylistic disagreement? Once you start reading up on this you'll see that I am far from alone in preferring to have fairly conservative use of flags in Wikipedia. For a recent example of an edit-war that centred around this issue, see the history of the Gibraltar article. I really am only a very luke-warm Scottish Nationalist, and would never dream of selectively removing England flags, which I think you were implying at one point (apologies if I read something into your comments that you didn't intend). I remove any and all that I see that aren't doing a useful job. In the same way I also remove most instances of "It should be noted that...", as this too seldom adds value to an article. Another problem is that (at least in my opinion), the over-use of flags contributes to the dumbing-down of Wikipedia. Who are these people using the encyclopedia who don't get Zimbabwe, but need   Zimbabwe instead? Our readers can read, and a good encyclopedia isn't festooned with dozens of tiny flags every time a country is mentioned. However, although I am pretty firm in my preference here, I certainly don't mind debating it further with you. Please try to assume good faith and accept that I am working (as I'm sure you are) towards the betterment of the encyclopedia. -- John 05:13, 22 August 2007 (UTC) reply

Hi. I removed the speedy deletion notice from the above article. The criterion cited is for bands, not songs. I wanted to suggest that you might want to consider putting {{inuse}} at the top of articles you've created while you're still establishing them. Hi again Sue. I noticed your post here, and, as you seem to be making a personal complaint about me rather than a general observation about the topic, I thought I would try answering your points here.

There are three things that concern me about your post.

1. By referring to me as "admin. John" you might make people think that I had used my admin powers in this matter. This would be highly inappropriate and is not something I have done or threatened to do, nor is it something I would ever do. On a matter like this I am not acting as an an admin but just an ordinary user like yourself.
2. You state that I am "deleting flags en masse". A perusal of my contributions will reveal that this is untrue. I can see less than 10 instances of this in my last 200 edits. As you can see too, several of my recent removals were based on the discussion here. I am not removing flags en masse, but as part of my ordinary work in copyediting articles I do remove redundant flags whenever I see them. Removing flags en masse would not, I think, be justified at this stage; if I was doing so I would expect criticism for it. I'd like you to recognise the distinction I am making here and refrain from mis-stating what I am doing in the future, please.
3. You said that "... John decided to edit an article I happen to have had a lot of input on ( Small Faces) he deleted images (with no warnings) oh and removed the flag icon - he has never edited this article before..." I deleted nothing; in fact I removed several images from the article which were being used in contravention of their fair use rationales. Album covers are not considered to be fair use in band articles. One does not own articles here and I am perfectly entitled to edit any of our 2 million articles without seeking your permission, as long as I abide by policy. I believe I am doing so. If you believe otherwise, or if you have any other qualms about anything I am doing, the polite course of action would be to raise your concerns with me in the first instance. Thanks for your clear response to a muddled set of questions. It was odd, I know -- but I wondered?

I came to the disambiguation page because I was beginning to look into the Ōe clan in the Sengoku period of Japanese history. I don't exactly recall how it played out, but there was some kind of conflict involving the 1994 Nobel laureate in literature, Kenzaburo Oe. As you may know, Oe's son, Hikari Oe, is autistic; and as a writer, the father's life-long efforts to understand and value his son's unique perspective have modulated the broad viewpoint from which he begins to write. That hyper-sensitivity to the non-standard is doubtless one of the factors which persuaded the Nobel committee to select this Japanese writer from amongst a range of other authors being considered that year.

In other circumstances, I'm guessing that I would have quickly deleted the Edinburgh grafittists with naught but "rv" as an explanation. In this case, however, I was moved by the impression left by the several Oe books I'd read. I was given pause ....

Now that I see the way you came to the Scots "OE" gang -- that you were following a chain of anonymous vandalism, there remains no defensible reason see the line on a disambiguation page as anything but clutter. I was wrong, of course ... but this seems to me like one of those times in which I am unembarrassed to have been so bluntly wrong-headed.

Thanks again for indulging me on this.

Also, I must tell you that I did like one other thing: I was pleased that you allowed for the possibility that there might be something more to what appeared at first blush to be pointless. You have deleted a lot my edits on this topic lately. I understand that this is the type of thing you have to live with if you decide to edit a Wikipedia article. All I ask is for consistency. I have used the British tabloids because they have been a lot more accurate then the official spokespeople who keep on claiming some variation of exhaustion. Recently I did not use a cite where one of her family members predicted disaster if her husband did go to jail. I did not use it because I was afraid my edit would get deleted because it was from a tabloid and there were already family member quotes in the section. Considering the events that followed I now feel I ill served our readers by not putting it in. I did put back in the tour managers claim that he quit because he was tested positive for heroin based on second hand smoke from her because it was from ABC News a major American Network and not a tabloid and therefore a reliable cite based on any guideline one might use. Deciding the reliability of the tour manager is not a decision for you or me to make but that news organization. I have refrained so far from putting back deletions from British tabloid cites because I am American and feel that British editors would have a better understanding of their tabloids then I do. But I notice that half the cites in the article remain from the Mirror,Mail,Sun etc. So if my cites from the same sources are getting deleted I do have to wonder. As I said earlier all I ask for is consistency. I will gladly abide by a rule that only the BBC,Times of London, Guardian and that type of source can be used but if but if "tabloid" sources are going to be used please then let me make judgments on reliability. Thank you for your quick response. I find the idea that Wikipedia is an online version of a regular encyclopedia one of those myths editors (including me for awhile) fool themselves into believing. I have Microsoft Encarta and they have no Amy Winehouse article as of today. They have one paragraph on the Sex Pistols and call New Wave a form of postpunk music when in fact Post Punk and New Wave are different genres. Wikipedia is part of the tabloid culture. It is said that unless you have a Wikipedia article written about you you are a nobody. I see the ABC News article has been left in. Just a note I have not seen the tour managers claims in any British tabloids. The American tabloids only differ from the U.K.'s in that there is no "knock you up" phase before they knock you down. But what should matter if is what is written accurate. As far as being trying not to keep the articles from being "overly negative" that is not our job. Amy Winehouse's personal life is "overtly negative" her music is well received and that is what the article portrays. I wrote she looked emaciated and had white powder on her nose that is what the pictures in the cite showed. Also unusual about her personal life as I wrote in the regular discussion page is the singer,her family and friends have run to the press to discuss seemingly everything. So you have a lot of notable quotes and they are in the tabloids.If Brittany Spears went on the pub crawl and ended up in a coma the publicist like Amy's would have said "exhaustion" everybody would have snickered and that would have been that. But Amy herself went to a tabloid to describe her bender. This is going to make her section inherently different then other celebrity biographies. I'm very weak on what makes an image acceptable to wikipedia, but I've found that if you upload a flickr image to Wikimedia Commons an admin comes along to check the licence and confirm it's in order. An example here. You are then preserved from having to deal with a rash of "possibly unfree image" comments (if it is a free image, of course). Apologies if I'm sticking my nose in here: I found that you are still on my watchlist from St Mary-le-Bow. The nomination period for coordinators is currently ongoing at Election 2008 Nominations for open positions will be open through 23:59 (UTC) on April 30 and project members should vote for any candidates they support by April 11 2008. The election will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the Lead Coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); the next four candidates will become Coordinators. Two new workgroups formed - Indian Christianity and Methodism Portal:Indian Christianity launched. Member News Our membership continues to expand. I'm informing you that the image concerned has been speedily deleted per criterion 12 of the criteria for speedy deletion. The problem was that the image on flickr had been marked as having all rights reserved, the image uploaded to wikipedia was therefore not free and incorrectly tagged. Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/Mutual aid society is designed to be a place where editors seeking specific assistance from other members can with luck find others who have the abilities or materials they need, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/Special collections is, at this point, the beginnings of a list of publicly accessible special collections libraries which our members might find useful. Anyone who lives near one of the collections listed is encouraged to visit them and see if they can find anything they would like to read or use to improve some of our articles. There are always some discussions regarding project related activities at Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/General Forum. I think the timing of the call for elections might have been bad (summer vacation, what was I thinking?), and have thus changed the period for individuals to run to be one of the project's coordinators. Individuals who have a particular interest or knowledge of specific fields within Christianity are encouraged to run, to serve as a kind of "unit coordinator" for that topic. Ichthus is the successor to the long running WikiProject Christianity newsletter, run under the WikiProject Christianity’s Outreach department. As such, you will continue to see information about our latest featured and good articles, DYKs, as well as new members who have joined our project. As many of you may know, our unofficial mascot, dear Wikipe-tan, hasn't yet indicated any particular beliefs. However, yes, as we all know, ahem, some people might object to our beloved mascot running around in a French maid outfit. People do talk, you know. ;) If anyone might be able to develop an image of the dear lady in a image more, well, "Christian," I would like to see perhaps a vote for next month as to which, if any, image of the dear girl we might make our own unofficial mascot. Christianity in other wikis

As many of you might now, there are a large number of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, including WikiSource, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, and others. I certainly believe that Wikibooks and Wikiquote might be among the more directly relevant sister projects. If any of you can think of any particular efforts in these other projects which you think would benefit from more input, please let us know here, so we can help spread the word around.

Spotlight on the Outreach department

Ichthus will spotlight a different subproject or workgroup of WikiProject Christianity. This edition will spotlight on our vital Outreach department. This comparatively small, but vital, project unit is dedicated to welcoming new editors to Wikipedia and the Christianity related content, and to providing information to the various project members, in forms like this newsletter.

The scope of articles with which this group deals is truly enormous, and, given the wide variety of material with which we deal, we would very much welcome the input of more individuals, particularly individuals who are particularly knowledgeable of the less well-known and less frequently monitored articles related to Christianity.

Speaking personally, I would be very, very gratified if we were to have this become a very, very large and active unit, with members from the broad spectrum of Christian beliefs, practices, and groups. Anyone interested in assisting with the development of these groups and topics is more than welcome to do so.

I believe

... in the statements contained in the Nicene Creed. I believe that the Bible is one of the two defining bases for belief. The other is the Sacred tradition, which provides us with means of interpreting the Scriptures, as well as some teachings which have been handed on by God outside of the scriptures. I believe that the Magisterium has been empowered to fill this interpretative function. I believe that clerical celibacy is a rule that should generally be followed. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

Contest of the month
We currently have a remarkable lack of Wikipedia:Wikipedia-Books. Right now, Category:Wikipedia books on Christianity contains only 12 books. We certainly could have at least one book on each major grouping within Christianity. One of the challenges for this month, then, is working to put together books on relevant topics. For this month, one contest is for editors to assemble the basic Wikipedia books for each of the main topics of the extant related projects. When finished, they should their creation of the books at the main Christianity noticeboard, and at the end of the month the project will award barnstars to those who have made a significant efforts in developing this underdeveloped content.

Also this month, we are going to have have a challenge to create and improve some of our more important missing or low-quality articles. As biographies are often a bit easier, this month we are choosing two biographies: Karl Behm, which has yet to be started, and the currently Stub-class article Nerses IV the Gracious. A barnstar will be awarded to any editor who can get these articles up to DYK quality level and ultimately selected for the DYK section of the main page.

Wikinews is our sister site for developing news stories. Several events relating to Christianity, like the installation of bishops for instance, do not necessarily merit extensive coverage in wikipedia encyclopedic articles, but can and easily could be covered at greater length in a news article format. Given the number of significant news events that relate to religion, including claims of miracles, assignment of bishops and other religious leaders, church conferences, and other events, this site provides an excellent opportunity to provide in-depth coverage of current events at greater length than wikipedia.

One of our newer editors, User:David_FLXD, has recently gone through much of our content related to Methodism and assessed it. We are very grateful for his efforts, and that of all the editors who have had a role in developing that content. We have every reason to believe that this will make it significantly easier for the Methodism work group to create and develop content relevant to Methodism. To help that along, we certainly encourage everyone to do what they can to help David and the other Methodism editors to bring the content relevant to their tradition to the highest possible level of quality.

As some of you may have seen, the Simple English Wikipedia has been experiencing some difficulties lately. This particular entity could be of great value to several individuals who are trying to learn English. As some of you who do speak foreign languages know, one of the most easily available, and, in general, useful learning aids for people is a text they know already, which allows them to focus on the specific words of the new language. Various recorded readings and translations of the Bible are among the best examples of this. Any efforts to try to enhance this vital means of informing a large segment of our readership is more than welcome. People interested in helping develop it are encouraged to leave a note regarding their specific articles of interest at the Christianity noticeboard. It would be wonderful if we could report some significant contributions to this sister site next month. And, of course, if we do have something to report, those involved would receive our greatest thanks.

WikiProject Calvinism is one of our more important subprojects. It is specifically devoted to developing content relating to the Calvinist tradition, and the primary point for development of content relating to the Pilgrims, Presbyterians, Reformed churches, Congregational church, Reformed Baptists, and Low church. We definitely encourage everyone to do what they can to help this project develop the content relating to this extremely important Christian tradition.

I believe
... that human nature is insufficient for salvation, and the grace of God is required to do so. I believe that God has preordained who will and will not achieve salvation. I believe that Jesus's atonement was sufficient for the purposes for which it was done. I believe that God's grace is of such power that it can overcome any person's resistance. I believe that those whom God has chosen for salvation will, by the undeniable power of God, persevere in God's grace. I am a Calvinist.

WikiProject Holidays/Christmas task force is the group whose purpose is to help develop the content related to the Christmas season, including Advent, New Year's, and related holidays. As many of us know, in several parts of the world, including the United States, the Christmas season is not only the time of one of the greatest holidays of the Christian liturgical year, but it is also the "make or break" time for many retailers, whose profitability for the year often depends on their success in this time of the giving of sometimes significantly expensive gifts. In other parts of the world, the winter solstice period and sometimes specifically Christmas itself means something that might surprise many Christians, like the Christmas in Japan, where Christmas is one of the times hotels receive the greatest number of, often unmarried, couples staying there for the night. The solstice season is also significant to several other religions. Many of these days are also legal holidays in several places. In Belarus, for instance, both the Western and Eastern Christmas commemorations are legal holidays. We would certainly welcome the members of this project to donate some of their time and talents in the upcoming months to improving this significant content.

Spotlight

The core topics work group is the group whose specific purpose is to help identify and develop those articles which are of greatest importance to an overall understanding of the broad subject of Christianity, based on what is included in the core topics list. These articles include some of specific churches and individuals, history, philosophical and theological matters, and more. We have had some recent discussion regarding which articles should be included in this list, and it probably makes sense to revisit the selections, and try to figure out how best to work to make them high quality articles. Discussion is beginning at WT:X regarding these matters, and all input is welcome.
