Last night

Faced with yesterday’s stream of highly abusive posts, what can we say?

  • Perpetrator started as IP, switched to a second when first was blocked. Page was then autoconfirmed protected and perp started creating accounts, making 10 or so junk edits (in particular to own user page) and then picking up the baton until blocked.
  • Geolocation places one IP in the Netherlands and the other in Canada.
  • Edits came less than 10 seconds apart (sometimes around 5) which suggests bot involvement. This speed made reverting almost impossible; Oversight asked me more than once for precise range of diffs and I could never do that.
  • I feel autoconfirm should not count either reverted edits or edits to user pages.
  • How to take this forward depends on what happens when page comes off semi-protection two days from now.

@ Hemiauchenia tagging you in case you wish to add anything here. Nick Levine ( talk) 09:42, 14 December 2022 (UTC) reply
  • Identical MO (I haven’t seen the diffs but everything else smells the same) last night. Same target. Three months extended-confirmed protection. Nick Levine ( talk) 10:17, 18 December 2022 (UTC) reply
  • perp started creating accounts — Actually autoconfirm requires at least four days membership. All the spam accounts used here were generated in mid October ( example). This was planned. Nick Levine ( talk) 11:05, 18 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Pyrrhonism

There was some contentious and un-encyclopedic content in that Pyrrhonism article.

While it's true that a few authors, typically a few decades ago, put out a claim that Aenesidemus invented Pyrrhonism, more current sources such as the SEP recognize this as a debatable point. It's certainly not somthing that should be stated as a fact, as ancient sources contradict the claim. Laertius gives a list of predecessors to Aenesidemus - something that ought to be in the article.

There was also an uncited and erroneous claim that all Pyrrhonists do is make arguments. This claim was contradicted in another paragraph - the one about the zetetic, ephectic and aporetic techniques. 47.202.113.143 ( talk) 23:03, 23 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Jeddism

Jeddism is a recognized religion under church non-profit status in multiple states and under federal non-profit status in ontario under the " Canadian jedi Association " as of 2023. It's also a well thriving spirituality. With a bunch of groups world wide and is not by any means " a joke religion ". Please stop removing my edit. Cherie Blair

WP seems to be the target of "unstable" left-leaning fanatics. See also their Raise the Age polemicising on WP. These polemicists should be firmly reminded that their plan about age of criminal responsibility would have meant Mary Bell would have been free to kill again. The police inspector who arrested her feared what she was capable of which is why as he stated: he "dared not risk another day". AUSPOLLIE ( talk) 23:12, 19 February 2023 (UTC) reply

That edit was not a test

Hi. I'm the one that made the edit to the article Denim Skirt about an hour or so ago. That wasn't a mistake. I was hoping you could let me edit it back? Johnnyboy2023 ( talk) 18:13, 13 March 2023 (UTC) reply

You wrote Shorter skirts made of denim are commonly worn by teenage boys and young adults. Implying that teenage girls do not wear them? Can you find a citation for that? Nick Levine ( talk) 19:03, 13 March 2023 (UTC) reply
Me. When I was a teenager and pre-teen, I wore jean skirts a lot and I am a boy. I'm not trying to leave girls out. I was focusing on the word "commonly." I figured since I usually did, it was common. Johnnyboy2023 ( talk) 19:12, 13 March 2023 (UTC) reply
Nevertheless you should pick language which doesn’t suggest that, among teenagers, only boys wear short frocks; and (important) claims which are likely to be challenged should be backed up by a reliable, external source. I’ll send you a plate of cookies. Nick Levine ( talk) 20:12, 13 March 2023 (UTC) reply

About my edit on Herbert Rudiger

Hello Nick Levine, I see that you reverted my edit in the article about Herbert Rudiger. I'm not sure why it was reverted though. I used the following source Descoberto o autor das bombas misteriosas that is included in the article. This source has the confession from Rudiger and I translated his confession from the newspaper reports. I only did some minor changes such as spacing the lines so it has more paragraphs (sorry If I misused the word, English is not my first language).

If there is an explanation concerning your revert for my edit, it would be of great help. 45.234.155.146 ( talk) 10:18, 1 April 2023 (UTC) reply

My mistake and I have restored your edits. Nick Levine ( talk) 12:07, 1 April 2023 (UTC) reply
Thank you! No need to apologize. 45.234.155.146 ( talk) 13:18, 1 April 2023 (UTC) reply
I made a mistake too! The actual source was not the O Dia (in which I linked above) but its the Imprensa Popular one source, which is the one titled "Um Americano - O autor das explosões em Porto Alegre". Just fixed the article 45.234.155.146 ( talk) 13:23, 1 April 2023 (UTC) reply
Thanks. We get there in the end. Nick Levine ( talk) 13:50, 1 April 2023 (UTC) reply

Edit removed on Gaussian Prime

Hello Nick, on the Wikipedia page discussion Gaussian integers, an edit I had made was "undone" on count of being "inaccurate information." This is not the truth: see Fermat's theorem on sums of two squares. The article I edited adjusted it what was written such that instead of stating "a prime is a sum of squares iff the prime is congruent 3(mod 4)," it stated instead that p must in fact be congruent 1(mod 4). 198.137.18.73 ( talk) 19:27, 19 April 2023 (UTC) reply

Ok, agreed. Sorry. Nick Levine ( talk) 19:32, 19 April 2023 (UTC) reply
Hang on, the article you refer to says a Gaussian prime is 4n+3, ie 3(mod 4) after all. See also [1]. Nick Levine ( talk) 19:49, 19 April 2023 (UTC) reply

inaccurate information

to make you aware that on his brother, Mr. Anil Kapoor instagram handle, you can check that he just turned 60 last year. And to also mention that the information regarding the sri Lankan cricket team in New Zealand in the year 2014-15 is inaccurate since that team lost by 4-1, whereas your page shows they defeated New Zealand by 6-0. You can refer to the cric information app for your confirmation. I'm looking forward to seeing the necessary changes for all mislead information. 110.226.183.82 ( talk) 09:25, 12 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Not sure who you’re referring to when you say “your page”. But there’s a Wikipedia policy that biographies of living people must be reliably sourced; and to be clear Instagram is not a reliable source. All the best, Nick Levine ( talk) 18:26, 12 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Your edit of the article on Hexagonal Water.

You inserted the idea that it is a marketing scam. While it seems certain that people are taking this idea into the realm of false marketing claims, that does not mean the science is wrong, or is itself a scam. Those are two separate things. Lumping them together impugns the work of Dr. Pollack. Yet your article reads as though the whole subject is nonsense. If it is going to be claimed that its fraudulent science, then that implies that Dr. Pollack is either a fraud or a fool. It seems a pretty cheap shot from Wikipedia, that I thought had a higher duty of care. If Pollack's work is in error, it should be shown WHERE it is in error. As for the "marketing scams"...they are there, so the article should be titled "Marketing Scams pertaining to Hexagonal Water" or some such. Jhaduvala ( talk) 10:10, 27 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Disruptive Edits

I am requesting you to please block pallavi.p.g28 because she is repeatedly and continuously making disruptive edits in the cast section of Udaariyaan. She is reverting correct information 103.101.212.245 ( talk) 15:35, 30 July 2023 (UTC) reply

If you have disagreements with another editor you should absolutely discuss them on the relevant article’s talk page. Even if I were an administrator, which I am not, I would not respond to user talk page block requests.
If any of that is unclear please get back to me. Thanks Nick Levine ( talk) 19:43, 30 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Username question

Hi, I blocked the Hebrew name you reported to UAA today; you said it translates as "Israel first", can you provide a link to that? For me it translated as a city name(which is the claim of the user). Thanks 331dot ( talk) 16:40, 28 March 2024 (UTC) reply

Translation came from app on my phone, I don’t therefore have a link for it.
On investigation it is indeed a place name, see Rishon LeZion and its Etymology section. So: both a city and has colloquial translation “Israel First”. Feels like a knotty problem; my grounds for reporting name are certainly weaker than they looked yesterday. Nick Levine ( talk) 17:23, 28 March 2024 (UTC) reply
