Adding links to book sales sites

Hello! And welcome to Wikipedia! I know you are a brand new editor and probably do not yet understand that we don't add links to sites that sell things. This is because we are an encyclopedia, not a marketing or advertising or promotional website. I noticed that you added links to multiple articles on the Roma/Romani people to a book by Becky Taylor that link directly to a site where readers can buy her book. I wanted to let you know that I will be removing that content. Do you happen to have a connection with Ms. Taylor? Netherzone ( talk) 21:29, 17 September 2023 (UTC) reply

No, I don't. I want more information to be available about the Romani people. Which, unintentionally, I suppose could be construed for promoting commercial enterprise as information, especially published information, is largely a commercial en-devour as we don't quite live in a an era where high-quality information is free (for the most part). I wanted a link to the publisher's official page as they tend to have the most up-to-date information on the book and display more information, like the multiple ISBN numbers available, that if someone was having trouble finding the book, they could take and find it at a library or whatever search platform necessary, to find a copy of it. I'll re-post without the url, or if you have suggestions to a more "neutral" url, I'm all ears. KnowTheManyHistories ( talk) 13:55, 18 September 2023 (UTC) reply

Hello again, I saw that you added content to Indigenous metal music with a link to a third party "source" that clearly states "buy this article". Please be more careful about adding proper sources, rather than links to places to buy the sources. WP is not a commercial endeavor. Have you read the essay itself or just the abstract? Try going directly to the book, article or essay (for example on Google Books). Thank you. Netherzone ( talk) 13:43, 18 September 2023 (UTC) reply

Changed link to Research Gate which has a link to request PDF from the authors. Please note, a) I understand the frustration with affiliate links which is why I've tried to avoid places like Amazon.com at all costs and b) and maybe I have some privilege here coming from academia, but any article, book, or whatever, even if it says 'buy now', can be requested through a public library. If the public library doesn't have it, a national/state/provincial/etc academic one will (any public university basically, the private ones are more hit-and-miss with public access). Library cards to those sometimes have a small fee, but you don't have to ever have been a student to access them. You just have to be a resident. Hello again! Thank you for you responses, it's good to meet you here. Do you have access to JSTOR or to Academia.edu? Also, there are several good resources via Wikipedia, such as WP:LIBRARY where you can apply for a "library card" for access to certain publications. There are some that come with the "package" and others you have to request access to independently. If you read the link above, there will be more detailed information. There is also Google Books and Google Scholar that are sometimes helpful.
There is also Search for references on WRS which is a WP affiliate.
And also the Wikipedia:Reference desk. And a few others, I don't have time to list them all at the moment, but that should help you get started.
Oh, and somewhere there is a list of predatory journals, basically pay-to-play "academic" journals where anyone can post anything and it's not vetted. We try to avoid those. If you are uncertain about a source, check out WP:RSP with is a list, by no means comprehensive, of reliable and unreliable source. Hope that helps! Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits to Heavy metal music, it appears that you have added original research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. Please don't introduce your own ideas into Wikipedia. Wikipedia is supposed to be a summary of published thought, not a platform for new thought. Binksternet ( talk) 03:33, 18 September 2023 (UTC) reply

Lists of musicians in a genre

See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Music#Lists which says:

  • "Music genre articles should not contain lists of performers. A separate list page may be created."
  • "Lists should not generally include musicians who do not have an article."

This is the second time you have added the band I Don't Konform to Wikipedia. Please write the article first before adding them. Binksternet ( talk) 13:22, 18 September 2023 (UTC) reply
