Neutrality

Thank you! A compliment from you is great. Alas, I dont' know how to remove the tags on James Thackara's article. Can you help yet again? Many thanks lumenlitt Lumenlitt ( talk) 21:42, 22 November 2009 (UTC) reply

Photographer identity

Hello . The photographer of the file:James_Thackara.jpg would prefer not to have his name listed on wikipedia as the source. Rather he wants "photo given to the author by the photograhper" Can you direct me as to how to get this done? My last question about this was entered on google as an entry which defeats the purpose. Many thanks lumenlitt Lumenlitt ( talk) 15:27, 24 November 2009 (UTC) reply

Isn't this what you mean? If so, you've done it again!  :-] Fleetflame ·  whack! whack! · 17:05, 24 November 2009 (UTC) reply

Hello Fleetflame, This old issue. Indeed the reference to the photogrpaher has been deleted as per his request. But, it still appears on Google with his name. Moreoever and more importantly, it was never intended to be an entry on google anyway. That is why is was given to attribution sharealike3. The thought behind that was that it would be on the article, but unreferenced. Now, it appoears on google by itself, ahead of the article. Can you help me sort this out? Ideally the picture would not be an entry and the photographers name is absent. Do we have to change the attribution share alike? Thanks and by the way, I suspect you had something to do with getting the article back on the google. Your help is most appreciated Lumenlitt Lumenlitt ( talk) 10:50, 25 November 2009 (UTC) reply

Article on Google

Hi, I am sorry for asking you questions and then figuring out how to make the change. Indeed so you know of my conrition, this one will remain unsolved by me! On Sunday, the article for James Thackara was appearing on google. Now, even after 25 pages it does not appear. A more focused search, ie google - james thackara wikipedia brings up in the followiong order 1) the entry about the jpg with the photographer's name still appearing as the donor of the photo and 2) the user:Lumenlitt entry to the article on Thackara and 3) my query about the copyright of the photo. Even though these entries and the absence of the article itself may be the effects of readjustments of the google system, it does confound me. Of course, I should add that the Thackara entry does come up when wikipedia is opened on its own without first going to google. Do you think I have made an error? Is there something I should do differently? It has been one of the greatest pleasures of my academic life to have worked on this for wikipedia and to have met such exigent and fair critics, so to have the fruits of that work not appear on google is a great frustration. Thanks in advance Fleetflame for your help. Lumenlitt Lumenlitt ( talk) 18:55, 24 November 2009 (UTC) reply

Hey Lumenlitt, no problem. Sorry about my late response, but I'll answer both questions right here. We can't do anything about Google searches - Google has a bot that crawls the web and indexes pages for searching. Old page revisions on Wikipedia sometimes show up for a few days or even weeks - they'll disappear eventually. The new pages or revisions can sometimes take a little while to show up as well. Like I said, it's all automatic, and we can't do anything about it. Just wait a while.  :-] Fleetflame ·  whack! whack! · 16:37, 25 November 2009 (UTC) reply

Help creating new template...

I saw that you tweaked {{ Ear}} back in June last year and, now that the original creator of that template has semi-retired, I was wondering whether I could enlist your help creating a similar template for responses on the Requests for feedback page. As you will see if you peruse that page, I am one of, if not the only, regular "feedbacker" there and it does get a little tedious bashing out the same response -- most seem to be versions of "non-notable person/company/band please read [the appropriate guideline]"; "you need to cite some references from reliable sources", "probably meets the notability guidelines but the tone is too spammy/unencyclopedic, please read WP:SPAM/ WP:TONE" - I think you get the idea. What would be a huge help, and speed things along, would be a switched template like {{ Ear}} that does all the hard work with a few shorthand switches. I am afraid my template skills do not stretch anywhere far enough to be able to attempt this, so, if you have time, would you be prepared to create one? Will watch this page for your reply. Thanks in advance. –  ukexpat ( talk) 21:59, 18 January 2010 (UTC) reply

I'm sorry to hear Mendaliv is semi-retired. Certainly, I'll toss some syntax together and see what we come up with.  ;-] Fleetflame ·  whack! whack! · 02:34, 21 January 2010 (UTC) reply

I've started offline, ukexpat. I'll need some info exactly what you're looking for, but I should be fine for a while just putting everything together. Also, {{ feed}} was deleted earlier today, so I'm hoping we can use that eventually. Fleetflame ·  whack! whack! · 02:54, 21 January 2010 (UTC) reply

I've got the basic framework down I believe, ukexpat, and I'm putting in some basic notability responses. What issues exactly do you want this template to cover? So far I'm just putting in the same responses I'd give someone asking the question, but if there's anything specific you want it to say, let me know. When I get it sort of pieced together I'll put it on here so you can tweak it to perfection.  :-] Fleetflame ·  whack! whack! · 16:19, 22 January 2010 (UTC) reply

Wow fast work! If you take a look at WP:FEED you will see the kind of responses that I and other patrollers routinely use. For now though it may be best to take a look at what you have done and keep tweaking it before we roll it out. I think if it covers the basic bios, bands, companies/orgs, and web notability responses, that would be a great start and may be things like "total spam", "more sources". Make sense? Thanks again for help. –  ukexpat ( talk) 16:29, 22 January 2010 (UTC) reply

Ooooo exciting! Let me play with it in my sandbox and maybe test it on a few live examples. Thanks again for the help. –  ukexpat ( talk) 18:53, 2 February 2010 (UTC) reply
Great stuff! I may play around with the text of some of the messages, but the essence of it is spot on. I guess it would be possible to shorten the first switch even more to just "bio", "corp" etc. I'll take a crack at adding a couple of my own too. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help with this - it should speed things up greatly. I am also going to work on revamping the advice for WP:RFF responders to incorporate use of the the template. Thanks again.  –  ukexpat ( talk) 19:02, 2 February 2010 (UTC) reply

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles ( talk) 03:25, 16 June 2010 (UTC) reply

Your input is requested at WikiProject Maine!

Hello fellow WikiProject Maine members!

I'm trying to breathe a little new life into WP:WP ME and as such I have posted a few questions on the project's talk page that I would like to get some feedback from all of the project's members on!
  1. There are apparently a lot of inactive members on our participants list (and even a user that has been blocked for years). What do we as a project want to do about inactive or blocked users? I have some ideas on the issue, but would love feedback from others.
    • Remove blocked users that appear to be no longer interested in participating in developing Wikipedia.
    • Users with zero activity at all in three years are unlikely to come back. I suggest that we remove them from the mailing list and deactivate any categorizing feature of a userbox on their page. When doing this, we must make sure to leave a note on their talk page explaining that since they have been off-wiki for three years that they have been removed from the list as a purely technical measure and they are more than welcome to add themselves back to the list if they choose to start editing again.
    • Users with zero activity on wiki for 18 months may come back, despite it being unlikely. I would suggest that we mark those users as inactive on our mailing list, and stop sending them messages like this one to prevent their user talk page from filling up with irrelevant notices.
    • Users with zero activity on wiki for at least six months should be marked as inactive in the mailing list template, but should still receive mailings.
  2. I'm also trying to gauge some interest in there being a Great American Wikinic in Maine! If you are interested, possible locations might include Portland, Augusta, and or Bangor, please make a note in the appropriate section on our talk page!
  3. We should create a template to use for mass mailings from this wikiproject so all we need to do is enter our message and signature and the general format of the box and image and title and stuff will stay familiar. What is your opinion on this idea? Do you have any preferences to what that may look like (because I think this looks horrible compared to some I've seen from other projects)?

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
