Hi, welcome to the sixth volume of my talk page.
Re the Bronson house: "The property is owned by the NYS Department of Corrections and is located on the grounds of the Hudson Correctional Facility in the City of Hudson, Columbia County." though the same press release says it's been leased to Historic Hudson, Inc for 30 years
Most of the archeological digs have "address restricted" on their NHL applications and in some way, I'd like to honor that.
I had some errands to do upstate so tried to take advantage of it and take some pictures of the sites that still needed it. I've also finished out most of the NYC sites. As for the Boston Post Road, the buildings are not really near each other and it's somewhat hard to identify them definitively. This building (which is now a restaurant on a golf course) was relatively easy to identify and get to, so until someone takes a better picture...
finally, you are probably right about Opus 40. I've tried to stay away from the whole fair use issue, but in this case, seems appropriate. dm ( talk) 15:51, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Dear Mr. Case:
I created the Cottekill, NY page in Wikipedia. I saw the photo you added of Rosendale Village and I would like to add a Cottekill Photo. I was wondering if you could tell me how to go about doing it. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! The Original Grunge ( talk) 18:03, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Why did you block User:Bravogolfhotel? First of all, that's probably not the name of any sort of company, it's phonetic alphabet for "B G H". Second, it doesn't fit "promotional usernames" as defined in the username policy, because they were not promoting anything. I think you've made an erroneous block. rspeer / ɹəədsɹ 17:01, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Today the IP Address 75.31.247.103 made a minor post to World War II Casualties. You blocked the same user (with a different IP address)on 5 Dec as a suspected Sock Puppet. The rule is that the article must be 1500 bytes AND less than 5 days old. Articles more than 5 days old qualify ONLY if they have been expanded 5 times the length in the past 5 days. As I said, I am willing to help. Time is short! Mrs.EasterBunny ( talk) 20:25, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
This article can be cleaned up. However, now is not the time. Clean up is slow and also reduces the article size potentially. Mrs.EasterBunny ( talk) 20:31, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi there: I saw this name come up as my watchlist covers "User names for deletion" or whatever the section is called. I was curious as to the reason. Nothing Googles under that name that I can find; it isn't rude or offensive in any way I can identify; and, it is not over long or incomprehensible. Hi, I see that rspeer has already contacted you about this block, but after hearing about this case I too must protest this block. The hotel you found upon googling does not seem to be widely known, on the other side the NATO phonetic alphabet is well known by many people in the entire world and anyone who has had any contact with radio communications would recognise this username as "BGH". Remember that the username policy states that having a company name as username is only problematic if the company is very well known, or if the user actually promotes the company. I therefore think that we should have assumed good faith and allowed this username.
Also, even if you disagree and believe that the username violates policy, I think notifying the user of this matter would have been a better course of action than blocking on sight. This user was making productive contributions and it would have been more welcoming to notify him of the username problem and direct him to WP:CHU. Experience shows that most newbies that are blocked for username violations stop editing even if they are later unblocked.
In addition, your block message did not specify what exactly was wrong with the username. In cases like this where most people wouldn't know what the violation is, using the optional parameter to {{
UsernameBlocked}}
indicating the reason for blocking is very helpful. If, for example, you had written {{
UsernameBlocked|your username matches the name of a hotel in Dumaguete City, Philippines}}
, this text would be incorporated into the block message instead of the standard template wich says "the username may be rude or inflammatory, be unnecessarily long or confusing, be too similar to an existing user, contain the name of an organization or website, refer to a Wikipedia or Wikimedia Foundation process or namespace, or be otherwise inappropriate", providing a more understandable explanation to the user.
Is he back? (
talk) 15:56, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, you can be blocked for only three reverts. To describe your first edit as simply removing a template is, at this point, a bit disingenuous. The other user gave clear reasons for his reverts in his edit summaries which you could have heeded and attempted to discuss on the talk page, whatever others think of him. Instead you continued to revert. You may not necessarily have been blocked for a 3RR violation, but you certainly did disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point. — Daniel Case ( talk) 07:31, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for uploading Image:Miranda Priestly.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the " my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot ( talk) 20:54, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

I sincerely apologize if you took my criticism as an attack, and I completely understand how when there are only a few ways to say something it's easy to accidentally use identical wording. It was never my intention to call this deliberate; in fact I was simply trying to save us all trouble in case the Gomez foundation came on here and leveled such an accusation. Your remarks on the history page about obfuscating the paragraph so I don't think it's plagiarism appear pretty personally hostile to me, and I don't appreciate that - I was only trying to help. I personally don't care how you word it, and though you appear to think otherwise ("now this is the sort of constructive editing contribution I'd appreciate" regarding the comment following mine), I was indeed trying to make a constructive suggestion. My apologies for not duplicating the copied text on your personal talk page, but you seem to have known exactly to what I was referring. Again, also, I had no idea who had written the original article as this was not part of my concern. Please don't think that I would casually accuse anyone of plagiarism - I merely said that it could be construed as such, and that I construed it as such. I am by no means an authority, and I still stand by my statement. On the article's discussion page, I have clarified exactly what sentences caught my attention, though you've already somewhat corrected the matter. Dwringer ( talk) 18:32, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your support. :) The nom was quite a ride! And a very close call, but I'm very happy that the third time turned out to be the charm. :) Now, especially since it was such a controversial nom, I'm going to take things very slowly. Plus of course it's the holiday season, so there are plenty of off-wiki distractions! I'm working my way through the exercises at the "admin school", and will phase very gradually into my use of tools. You are also absolutely correct, that I have strong incentive to not be a controversial admin. I think that everyone will find my adminship actually quite boring, after such an exciting nom. ;) Anyway, thanks again, and have good holidays, El on ka 10:30, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I am a new admin and am curious as to your block of 116.14.112.226 ( talk · contribs). When it was reported to AIV, I declined [4] to block because the IP's stopped editing at 11:47, one minute before they receive a "last warning" at 11:48. Daniel--while the official name is "Adirondack Park" New Yorkers call it Adirondack State Park. The reason I ask is that I've seen other state parks referenced in the news recently as being the biggest...I checked it out on wiki and noticed that 76.167.196.174 made several edits this fall that seemed to exploit the official name of Adirondack Park. I corrected 76.167.196.174 's changes reflecting my understanding that Adirondack Park is a NY State park. What say you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.108.77.121 ( talk) 08:09, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Daniel --thanks for the prompt reply. You said--"Well, I'm a New Yorker, and I've always called it Adirondack Park. That's what the entry sign says along the Northway. That's what the state says in all its promotional material. That's what Adirondack Life magazine uses. That's what I get 146,000 ghits on, as opposed to 28,000 on for "Adirondack State Park". To call it the latter isn't just a misnomer but a misunderstanding. You were right to revert those edits. New York has plenty of other state parks; the difference with the two forest preserves is that they're much more like a national forest in that they contain much private land and permanent habitation within their boundaries. Wood-Tikchik State Park should rightly be referred to as the largest state park in the U.S., while the Adirondack Park is the largest state-level protected area. Daniel Case (talk) 10:43, 22 December 2007 (UTC)"
Despite it's official name, I would still agrue that it's a "State" park by definition: a park created and run by a State. It fits the wiki state park definition and is even mentioned as an example. As for private lands, I'm unsure about Wood-Tikchik, but regarding Anza-Borrego State Park (cited by some as the largest state park in the lower 48): "The primary mission of the Anza-Borrego Foundation (ABF) has been to acquire the private lands within and bordering Anza-Borrego Desert State Park®. When it was formed in the early 1930s, the park was checker boarded by thousands of acres of inholdings—one estimate as high as 60,000 acres—nearly 10% of the current park!" Is there a particular significance to "state-level protected area", because it certainly doesn't roll off the tongue or carry much resonance with a layman.
Daniel, again appreciate the prompt reply. Britannica online sees it as a State Park - "The area was sparsely settled when in 1892 the state legislature created Adirondack Park, which has grown over the years to become, at more than 5 million acres (2 million hectares), the largest U.S. state or national park outside of Alaska." Avoiding the obvious is leading to erroneous assertions about the relative size of other parks. I've returned to earlier verbiage in the intro sentence which labeled it a state park.
Daniel, I've (previously 68.108.77.121) started a thread on the article's talk page. Mirboj ( talk) 20:14, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

You know, it was only after re-reading your statement regarding IRC that I realised that you DO have a point there! Conversations on IRC are "real-time", and are seldom saved anywhere, as opposed to discussions on article and project talk pages, which are forever being archived and saved after a fashion. I don't think we need to worry about ArbCom picking up this RFAR, the four votes are there.
For my part, I view the IRC end as mostly an "off-duty lounge" type atmosphere, where editors and admins alike can "dress down", and exchange ideas in a casual environment. Consensus debates DO belong "in-Wiki", and the channel's topic displays that. As for the "user bashing", if I were being disruptive and continuously going against consensus, I would expect to receive my fair share of bashing as well...
I DO understand where you are coming from, even though I may not agree with some of your assertions. You stated that your belief was; "I believe our interactions and collaborations take place best in spaces where we are completely within Foundation ownership and Wikipedia policy." In contrast, I have gotten to know some of my fellow WP:USRD editors far better through IRC than would have ever been possible "in-Wiki". Collaborations, yes. I can see that side of the coin, and even agree somewhat. The thought processes, however, can sometimes be better revealed in a real-time environment. Edit Centric ( talk) 10:52, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Daniel. Nice photo and short article on Grahamsville Historic District. However, I browsed the NRHP text document for the site, and it describes facts somewhat differently as 5 buildings on 20 acres, instead of 6 buildings on 200 acres. Would you take a look at that source? In the article, I provided a link to the NYS OPRHP search form that would bring up the NRHP text document, as well as photos and "other" (correspondence). By the way, how I am finding it to be most convenient to get documents from that system, is to print the documents to PDF files on my own computer, then read them. I use PDF995, a free pdf-writer available from, i think, software995.com. Happy new year and all that! :) doncram ( talk) 02:48, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to think I helped, by nudging you back to trying the NYS OPRHP source again, thereby getting to the NRHP text document for this site, which might have allowed you to be more definitive in a lot that you say there. But you are the man, for having written and integrated all that, besides taking the beautiful pics and laying it all out so nicely!
But please tell, how do you discern the URL that will work to cite directly the document at NYS OPRHP?

Thanks for the back up; I wasn't going to continue it further, but it's good to have a reminder every now and then that things can get out of hand when you're so keen on being right. :) It's a common misconception, though, so I think with the proper info they'll see the light. Actually, I haven't "seen the light", and don't accept that believing that non-jews are not Holocaust victims is a "common misconception". There were many other groups that were victimized by the Nazis; the Holocaust was the organized, mass killing of Jews by the Nazis and it follows for me that non-Jews were not Holocaust victims. This viewpoint is held by many scolars and is also reflected in many popular resources about the Holocaust (e.g., the US Holocaust Memorial Museum).
I made one revert and get called out. I'm fairly new to this, but Jeeze. 165.189.169.190 ( talk) 16:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I am well aware that groups other than jewish people were victims of the Nazis. That's the distinction I'm raising about Borowski.
How about something like this "..reading books by Holocaust survivors, such as Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi, and other survivors of Nazi persecution such as Tadeusz Borowski, who was also a noted writer of Holocaust literature..."
Does "The Reader" specifically identify Borowski as a "Holocaust survivor"? Can you point me to where?

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: this is a test. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?
I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.
You have several options freely available to you:
- If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
- If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
- You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there.
Thank you.
Seems to work now. Did your reasons contain an = sign? you need to do "1=reason" in that case. Maybe the template's changed since you used it in the past.— Random832 16:34, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm charged with making the reservations for us, so let's make it official. We'll do this via voting and everyone including anonymous voters, sockpuppets, and canvassed supporters is enfranchised. Voting irregularities and election fraud are encouraged as that would be really amusing in this instance. Please vote for whichever restaurant you would like to eat at given the information provided above and your own personal prejudices at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC#Let's make it official. The prevailing restaurant will be called first for the reservation. If a reservation cannot be obtained at the winning restaurant, the runner-up restaurant will be called thus making this entire process pointless. Voting ends 24 hours after this timestamp (because I said so). ScienceApologist ( talk) 17:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Regarding this edit at AIV, there is a SSP report filed here. As for the edit the IP was mentioning, another editor and myself refactored the heading to level three in an attempt to clean up the talk page -- it was becoming vastly overcluttered with "new" discussions from various IP addresses.
This is also not the first false AIV report filed by the IP addresses, either. Hope this helps, Seicer ( talk) ( contribs) 04:41, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Awesome pic, and text, for Dutchess County Court House. Nice work again....
I think your new writing, using the NRHP text source, comes across as more definitive. I "believed" your other articles, but having a source at the end of the paragraph does come across better, IMO. I wonder though, when you are adding the text reference, why not also add the photos reference? Like i added for the Grahamsville one. It would be relatively easy for you at that moment to add it. I wonder if you think it does not add so much for the reader? p.s. I didn't separately check if there are photos available for this site, but i note you haven't added photo ref for other recent articles at least. doncram ( talk) 08:26, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Daniel, I have a question regarding deletion of the history of one's user page. I have some things that remain in my user page's history that I would like removed (personal information, etc), but I don't want the entire page deleted. Would it be possible to remove all of the history up until now, leaving only the most recent edit intact? Would you be able to do this if it were possible? Take care, María ( habla con migo) 20:29, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Could we eliminate half the problem by blocking edits from new editors or anonymous IP addresses to the List of Days of our Lives cast members? He's back and just going nuts and it seems to be a frequent target of anonymous IP addresses. I think restricting it to established users would cut 90% of my wikiheadaches. Thanks so much. Grant's really causing more problems than I thought. The continued sockpuppetry is leading me to strongly consider asking to have him considered banned by the community, not just indefblocked. Daniel Case ( talk) 14:34, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure you guys by now just think I'm on a personal crusade, but I think the semi-protection might be the best of a bunch of not-quite-ideal solutions, inconvenient as it is. I'd strongly advise against banning the entire Telkom SA range from Wikipedia, as I'm sure you'd guess. Have been racking my brains the last few days trying to figure out why but of course that's the great unanswerable, just headache material. I have to honestly say I'm supremely tired of the fact that the pointless obsession of one person to be right/wrong/'famous' causes this much hassle for this many people and I'm sure the DOOL people agree. Kit Berg ( talk) 18:16, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Where is he at it now? I'll see if I can just protect the page. If not, another soft rangeblock is in order (so Mr. Berg will be able to edit, and Grant knows that unlike the IPs we can and will permanently block any accounts he creates). Daniel Case ( talk) 18:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I wondered if you consider your block of User:Starfm1027; I believe the AIV notice was premature, as the user has made quite a few useful contributions in the past. I don't know them personally, but from the user's talk page history they weren't talked to once by the reporting editor; instead, they just received templates. Anyway, I just wondered if you'd let me talk to the user and tell him what's wrong with his edits, if you'd consider unblocking them. Not sure how/where I should add this, only that the pattern of editing behaviour by Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/CompScientist has been mimicked by a variety of unregistered users at the Supercar page. I suspect the following may be all the same user as CompScientist. No positive contribution to the page, simply unwarranted reverts of unsourced material with the same assumed bad faith on part of other editors and no other significant contributions from the specified IP address.

Thanks for uploading Image:Record banners.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. It would be really great if u could march through the List of National Historic Landmarks in New York, spiffing up the articles' writing and the corresponding descriptions. This is what i think is necessary to bring the list to FL status (both the articles plus the list itself need to be improved). You are doing/have done such great writing on so many NRHP articles, you make it look easy, but i know it is not (at least for me, i donut haff de wurdz 2 doo it). doncram ( talk) 06:22, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
I can't fathom the details of the template syntax. The line " Archive – Start a new article..." has begun displaying outside the {{ Did you know}} template on pages where it is transcluded, as for example on my talk page: outside the template and above the hooks instead of below the hooks and inside it.
I'm asking you because it wasn't doing that before about an hour ago and the most recent edits to the template were yours. — Athaenara ✉ 03:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

You cannot begin to imagine how thrilled I was to have gotten your response last week! Your comments were very very nice and very very welcome and I greatly appreciated them. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time since trying to figure out exactly how mechanically to respond to you. I hope what I am doing now proves to be the correct way to do it! I had seen your name many times on the discussion pages and have come to greatly admire your work and your expertise. Unfortunatelly, as I said, every time I tried to join in the discussion it didn't seem to work. Actually, I had tried several times in past months to "log in" as a user of Wikipedia. Apparently, I was doing something wrong because this is the first time that it seems to have actually worked! Well, actually I won't know THIS worked until or unless I get a response from you! As far as your corrections and suggestions go: a. Last week I got a visit from a delightful lady, Mrs. Starin, who with her husband used to own and live in Gomez House. She came in to complain that we are not doing enough to publicize the history of the Town of Newburgh. I printed out the Wikipedia article thinking that would impress her. Instead of impressing her, she went totally ballistic because Gomez Home wasn't even metioned! I figured I better put it on pronto! So what you saw I did very rapidly and of course I agree with your suggested edits. b. I had seen the article on Route 747 a long time ago and it completely knocked my socks off. Then I saw all the changes made little by little as time went by and kept getting more and more impressed. There was a sentence in their that the "only" homes and businesses on the old Drury Lane were on the part which is now a cul de sac. I would have totally and completely ignored that sentence were it not for the fact that one of my best friends lives in one of the houses which is now on the new 747. She complained to me all through the construction, which must have been horribly inconvenient for her and her family. She complained that she had to change her address through the post office and with all her correspondents from Drury Lane to Route 747 even though she didn't move. NOw she is complaining because her front lawn used to be flush with the road and now you have to go down a fairly steep incline to get to her house. Frankly, if I hadn't been listening to her detailing these developments all these months I would have left it alone! By the way, she is the one who pointed out to me that there IS a westbound ramp onto 84. I don't understand for the life of me why the state changed its mind on that but agree with your asssessment that best leave it alone. I frankly did not want to take the responsibility of totally eradicating what you had previously written which is why I worded it the way I did. c. You are completely one hundred percent correct that I had hit a button at the top totally by accident and was hysterically trying to undo it and couldn't figure out how! I hope you got this message and want you to know that I cannot thank you enough for taking the time and trouble --- and simply caring --- enough to respond to me and to offer me help. My time is very limited but I am going to do the best I possiblly can. By the way, your name didn't ring a bell when I first saw it but now that you called it to my attention I remember seeing your by line in the Mid Hudson Times about 10 years ago. At that time, I was Congressman Ben Gilman's press secretary and part of my job was reading all the weeklies from throughout Orange and surrounding counties and reporting to him on what was going on. I am going to try to sign out now. Hope I got it right. Nghtownclerk ( talk) 20:44, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
I apologize for not knowing the proper protocol in posting replies on your talk page, but it took me a while to figure out electronically how to do it. I read your article on Powelton Club and it truly knocked my socks off. I learned a great deal from it. You obviously can't use the following because it is in the realm of "Newburgh urban legend" but I thought you would be interested: prior to the late 1920's, Route 9W was what is now Balmville Road, on the east side of the Powelton Club. When they built the new stretch of highway west of the Powelton Club which you referred to, prohibition was at its height. WHen I was a kid, I was told by various old timers that numerous boot leggers and gangsters are buried under the pavement of this new stretch of Route 9W! Fascinating, no? I have been very very busy at work lately, so haven't had any time to get into any serious editing, but plan to do so when I have some free time. In the meantime, keep up the good work! Nghtownclerk ( talk) 14:01, 28 January 2008 (UTC) Thre is something else I really wanted you to know: I also got a real kick out of your article on New York State Route 207. Your comments about this route within the City of Newburgh were right on. I vividly remember that when you approached the intersection of Wisner Avenue eastbound there was a prominent shield with a directional arrow indicating that 207 turned onto Wisner. That sign and arrow disappeared at least 25 years ago (probably kids) and NYS DOT apparently doesn't think it is worth the expenditure to replace it! Likewise, if you are going westbound on 17K you encouter a 207 shield with the "JCT" banner but there is no further information after that. The directional arrows indicating exactly where access to 207 is are long gone. Now, many years ago when they widened Route 32 wihtin the City of Newburgh, there was a temporary detour. That Route 32 sign at the intersection of 17K and Wisner Ave. which you mention is a reminant of that temporary detour! It should have been removed years ago but apparently the powers that be either overlooked it or think it is not worth removing. Nghtownclerk ( talk) 14:20, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
{{
di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast ( talk) 20:39, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi! It's great to hear from someone else in the project. As I was going through delivering the newsletters, it was a bit disheartening to see that over half of the members of the project are either on an extended WikiBreak, or haven't contributed for months. Those pictures look great, and I think would greatly help the project. Well, seeing that you were one of the few who seem still active in the project, I have no doubt that I'll be talking with you soon. Have a great day! -Mastrchf91- 20:09, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi Daniel -- Thanks for your recent addition of the NYSOPRHP reference to the Riverby article. I wonder, you weren't able to get a single pic of the Riverby estate complex, if not of the study that is the NHL per se, when you were in the area to do Slabsides? A pic for the Riverby article, even if just in the vicinity, would help. I am also not clear if the estate runs down to the Hudson River, or if it does not, so the article doesn't say. Hello. I have edited the "Posen speech" page and "Heinrich Himmler" page with IMT documents and cited the source: Arthur R. Butz book. User Jayjg has deleted my edit twice saying: "remove material from unreliable source - what Butz says is irrelevant"... Well, I think Butz is a source, and discussion must follow, but I think it´s very inapropriate to delete this information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.6.238.83 ( talk) 18:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Daniel; thanks for the substantial note. Of the three criterion I listed, the most serious (IMHO) is the tone and diction. I came across the article by accident, and found a lot of good information. On the whole I think it's a good article (not to be confused with Good Article), it just needs to take a more formal tone. I actually would have simply asked for a GA review, but since I noticed other editors' concerns regarding the tone spanning over the past several years I felt it prudent to delist at this time. As far as source = (1/time) I have several similar circumstances with some of my pet articles. Regarding the images, I've had GA noms fail because of excessive Fair Use images; however I see your point regarding historical events. That in-and-of itself does not require delisting as far as I know (and shouldn't keep it from being relisted in the future, I don't think). I will try to find some time to work on the diction, but I wouldn't expect it to happen overnight. :-) Thanks again! / Blaxthos ( t / c ) 06:30, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

No problem, Just in case my note sounded like a lecture, I must apologize, I didn't realize it was a oversight. There is tendency on the part of certain editiors of a political bent to try to ignore or trivialize the existence of indian christians. But I do realize most people (in the US) are not really familiar with the indian subgroup keralites. It was actually very cool that you single out the minnu, as that is a very distinctive feature of south indian weddings, not many people pick up on that. I got to commend you on the article also, its very professionally done. Good job and keep up the great work on wiki.-- Kathanar ( talk) 22:34, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I recently saw your article on St. Philip's in the Highlands. Do you think it might be worth trying to make a stub for St. John's in the Wilderness? It's not an NHRP, but there is, of course, the interesting Palm Sunday tradition, which is documented in secondary sources, like Myles' book. Alas, the Highlands are now far from me, but I'd be willing to work on a stub if you think it might be worth keeping. Choess ( talk) 01:58, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that they are not affiliated with the Trust, if that is your concern. LOL, thanks for the note! I was working on Gay Talese articles, but when I wrote The Kingdom and the Power I was stunned to see that nobody had ever written an article on one of the NY Times publishers (the paper has only had five!) so I figured I might as well write it myself while I was on the subject. You reviewed the block and then he, I assume, came into my room and used my computer (where I keep my username and password saved) and edited from there. Is there a way I can change my password, since it's quite obvious to my family members what it is, to keep him from editing from my name if he chooses to? I did something wrong and I don't know how I did it nor how to undo it. I added a "history" section to the article on the Hamlet of Orange Lake. (I have enough to do that I am paid for I shouldn't be doing this at this point in time but that is another story.) Anyway, I thought I had no problem. However, somehow I seem to have deleted "external links" inadvertently. When I go to edit they are there but when I read the final page they are gone. In addition, there are no citations at the end of the article although I added many with my additions and the footnotes do appear in the body of the article. When you get a chance, please tell me what I did wrong, and how to undo it? Nghtownclerk ( talk) 23:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
After several hours of cutting, pasting and experimenting, I got the "external links" back on the Orange Lake article. However, no matter what I do I can't get the citations back to the bottom of the article, although it is peppered with my footnotes. I have no idea what I did wrong.
I don't know how I deleted external links in the first place, and don't know why I can't get citations to work.
Just wanted you to know also I was perusing your article about New York State Route 300 and saw that you refer to Kings Hill as the highest elevation in the Town of Newburgh. My own recent revisions to the Town of Newburgh article cite the southernmost part of Marlboro Mountain as the highest elevation. My topographic map shows the part of the mountain in the Town of Newburgh in excess of 750 feet but Kings Hill only 700. For now, I put the phrase "one of" in the appropriate places. I am going to do further research in the morning, so by noon I should have the correct info in both places. Nghtownclerk ( talk) 03:06, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks SO much for blocking that infernal 150.148.0.27. Hi. On T:TDYK, you added a comment to the Grigore Cugler entry. I have no problem with doing my best to address your concern, but the implications the concern has strike me as odd. Allow me to elaborate.
I have submitted many DYKs so far, and many of them had their hook centered not only on a Romanian-language reference, but on a printed Romanian reference. So have other editors. I see the DYK system has become more organized since, but surely one cannot exclude hooks from appearing on the first page because they trace back to a non-English source... I mean, what sort of verification of the source is expected? In this case, I will do my best to translate exactly what the source I used says, and you can corroborate the translation by asking other Romanian users if it is correct (in cases like this, I've seen that editors seek assistance from members of local projects - weirdly enough, I am one of the more active members of WikiProject Romania, so I should say, from other members of such a project). I'm not sure, however, if this process of translation should be automatically expected from users in order to verify a source for the DYK process. Furthermore, since wikipedia actually favors printed sources, how would (or, indeed, could) one run a quick check to see if the citation matches the source? (Note that this applies to English and non-English sources alike.) Would you actually put entries on hold because they confirm with the strictest of wikipedia's requirements? Not to mention that, in this case, we are talking about a Romanian writer who is still largely unknown in the Western world, so most basic references to him are in Romanian.
In Cugler's case, two references (marked 1 and 4, and, respectively: an article in a regional newspaper; an essay by a literary critic) quote his letter to Pauker. For some reasons, the two sets of quotations differ at the end (if I'm allowed to presume, I think one paraphrased the original text and forgot to indicate that it did). The article cites the part where the two sources agree: "noua orientare politică a guvernului român, care se îndepărtează de convingerile şi sentimentele mele" (as per the translation I provided in the article). Only reference 1 mentions the rumor according to which his was seen as a gesture of defiance: "Demisia formulată în termeni cu totul neobişnuiţi de cunoscutul diplomat interbelic Grigore Cugler a stârnit şi vâlvă, şi spaimă, fiindcă nimeni nu cutezase până atunci s-o înfrunte pe temuta femeie-comisar Ana Pauker, care preluase portofoliul Externelor." This translates as: "The resignation expressed in completely unusual terms by the interwar diplomat Grigore Cugler sparked, at the same time, rumor and fear, as no one had yet dared confront the feared female commissar Ana Pauker, who had taken over the leadership of Foreign Affairs." Reference 4 introduces its reference to the letter of resignation with the words: "În ultimii ani au apărut date noi despre cariera diplomatului Cugler [...] terminată în noiembrie 1947, odată cu instalarea Anei Pauker în fruntea unui nou minister de Externe, controlat în întregime de comunişti." This means: "Over the past years, new data has emerged in reference to the career of Cugler the diplomat [...] which ended in November 1947, at the same time as Ana Pauker's inauguration at the forefront of a new Foreign Ministry, entirely controlled by the communists." After this quote, the reference moves to discussing the serious nature of the letter, contrasting it with the supposed perception of Cugler as "trifling" etc. - which, as you'll see, is talked about in the article, but not in the hook. I don't suppose that the rest of the hook - him being an avant-garde writer or a classical violinist, and him living the rest of his life in Peru, need more referencing. If you want me to indicate the relevant fragments for these tidbits, to the measure where they are not self-explanatory, I shall provide them to, along with my translation.
Feel free to ask for more checks on the references, my translation, and whichever detail, but allow me to wonder if this trend is taking us in the right direction or leading to practical results. Thank you for your patience in reading this message. Best, Dahn ( talk) 21:01, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted you to know I am back in town. I have a lot of work to do mostly with digging up citations for things I have already written (looking them up? Not a problem! Finding the time to do it? THAT'S the problem!) I guess it was becauase I was away for the week that I discovered I was not "logged in" when I tried to edit. Some of my previous edits identify me by a number not by my name. I had to search to remind myself of my log on name and password, but I have done it successfully so hopefully that problem won't recur. I just wanted you to know some things quickly that I wished to call to your attention: a. I am sorry I even got into the "elevations" part of the Town of Newburgh. My intent was to add one or two sentences to the "Geography" section indicating that Cronomer Hill is the higehest elevation in the Town of Newburgh. Can you imagine my shock and surprise when I checked the topographic map to get the elevation of Cronomer Hill and learned that it is NOT the highest elevation --- in fact apparently isn't even in the top four? It is quite clear from your comments that you know a hell of a lot more about this topic than I do and I should have simply left it alone. (Incidentially, according to this map Marlboro Mountain does reach 1,000 feet in elevataion but considerably north of the Town of Newburgh line.) b. I got a giggle out of your observation that I have done nothing about the school districts in the town and that they are much more simple in Newburgh than in other towns. Please be advised that I have every intention of doing something someday but it is going to take a lot of research. You may not be aware that the "consolidation" of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District took place after a great deal of political controversy including three referenda (the results of which were ignored by the New York State Education Department) and lawsuits left and right, culminating in the Newburgh School District expelling all Town of NEwburgh residents from NFA for 1962-63. This is something I don't want to touch until I can get some research done and hope you are patient. It is a thoroughly fascinating story which would be of interest to those who call my office asking why there are four school districts which cover the Town of Newburgh. c. As far as the zip code section goes, one of the biggest and most recurrent problems I have in my office is that caused by the seven different zip codes in the Town of Newburgh. I composed that section with the intent of having a reasonable, easy to understand answer for people, and hope this was at least a first step towards that. People come into my office virtually every day for certificaation that they live in the Town of Newburgh,for one reason or the other. The Commissioner of Jurors office in Kingston continually summons Town of Newburgh residents to Jury Duty in Ulster County. They just plain doesn't understand that many people with a 12589 zip live in Orange County. Many if not most people summoned simply appear for Jury Duty and dont' question it. Another problem I have is that Wallkill HIgh School quite commendably passes out voter registration forms to its students 18 years old or older and impresses them with the civic responsibility of voting. Then, they mail them all to the Board of Elections in Kingston, not grasping that a large percentage of their students live in Orange, not Ulster, COunty. The kids show up to vote and are turned away and then are turned off on the system. I understand and applaud and totally agree with your desire for more citations. I am learning from reading many other wikipedia articles that this is not as difficult as it might seem. For example: I learned from one of your articles that google maps are acceptable. This is a big help. You may note that I added a section on Gidneytown to the Town of Newburgh which includes reference to Gidney Pond. I know all of this information because I lived in this hamlet since I was 3 years old. I fished in Gidney Pond as a kid. I learned to swim in Gidney Pond (successfully) and tried to learn how to ice skate on Gidney Pond (not as successfully). You ask: how can I certify all of this information? Well, it is easy. All I have to do is go to the Newburgh Library and dig out the copy of the Newburgh News from microfilm from when the child drowned there. My problem isn't doing it: my problem is finding the TIME to do it (this coming weekend is out of the question). d. Don't want to be critical, but in your article about Quassaick Creek you mention that Bushfield Creek is its only named tributary. Apparently you forgot that Gidneytown Creek is a tributary. They hook up in the City of Newburgh. e. Also, your article on Chadwick Lake indicates that the dam was built (in 1926) for the specific purpose of creating a water supply for the Town of Newburgh. Please be advised that Chadwick Lake was privately owned until 1961. To the best of my knowledge, whoever built the dam did not do it for this purpose. When it was suggested that the town purchase the lake as a potential future water supply, there was a great deal of controversy, because some people contended it was a waste of money -- the Town of Newburgh would NEVER grow to the point where it would need a reservoir! (ha, ha) Please let me do some more research on this and get back to you with details. Iam sorry but I have to get back to work now. I am totally fascinated by Wikipedia and am having a great deal of fun with it, but I have got to keep reminding myself that I have a lot of responsibilities and I am going to have to keep Wikipedia on the back burner and come to it only when I have free times! You have no idea how pleased I am that you have taken me under your wing. I don't know what I could have done without your guidance and advice. Nghtownclerk ( talk) 15:48, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Another admin suggested that I contact you regarding my post here. I believe that an editor evading blocks is attempting to IP hop in order to participate in a discussion. The IP is of a range for which two other IPs in the same range were blocked as sockpuppets of an IP that you originally blocked. The IPs in this range have incredibly similar edits made to video game, episode, and character related articles. I apologize if posting the evidence on the aforelinkedto page was not the correct place, but I thought those participating in the discussion should be aware as I am not sure if we are supposed to oblige a potential ban/block evading editor. The
Adirondack Park example maybe an anomaly caused by a land manager choosing a unit measurement (in this case, acres) for all parks under their admin. Yes, as I had said to RuhrFisch and Dincher, sq km and sq miles seem more appropriate for states and countries.
Please have a look at
this.
user:Chrisjj uses the same less than 1 km² limit that you do. I don't know what the attribution is or what the source is, but I have never heard of it outside WP. Please read the responses of the respondents from metricated countries. Bear in mind that
user:Chrisjj is from the UK and should have disqualified himself from the discussion. I see that although discussion was had and I think a reasonable consensus formed, it wasn't reflected in the MoS. Please understand (note the pleading, desperate tone) that what
user:Chrisjj and yourself advocate by using km2 above a value of one can lead to awkward expression for metric users. For non-metric users, metric is just awkward and unfamiliar from the get-go and some may not appreciate the additional oddity of inappropriate metric units. For metric users, hectares are usually the thing wherever acres are used. I am sure as an editor and reviewer of articles, you wish to eliminate awkward expression. For metric users, it is similar to giving you 25 sqcm
convert: unknown unit, rather than 25 sqcm
convert: unknown unit. Another example of awkwardness added to WP
here.

Thanks for your response and your patience on this subject. I am not sure of the protocol for resurrecting archived conversations, but anyway here it is. Bobblewik must have really stirred things up. In almost every article with an Australian subject and land area that I have found has had the hectares converted to km2 by Bobblewik. What a pain. I have found lots more examples and sources that use hectares for managed land area. I won't clog up your talk with them here. I may be wrong with your speed of light example, though your teacher may have used a
cgs based metric system (was common in science), rather than the SI which is based on MKS.
c for me was 3×108 ms-1. Anyway, one last request; what would you recommend as a next step to get this recognised in the MoS? My first thought was in the talk page of the numbers section of the MoS. Other than that I thought of around the Village Pump somewhere. Wherever I put it, I will try to leave you out of it for the moment. I won't link back to this discussion on our talk pages unless I really need to. It might just generate a bit of noise for a while that might be distracting, unless of course you need another distraction. If you don't see it, I will post a note back in your talk when some consensus transpires. Your thoughts would be appreciated and thanks again.

Hi -- I have been considering what are " protected areas" of or in a given state, brought up by some recent edits by User:Hmains, including his editing of a "Category:Protected areas in California", but coming to my attention via his editing of African Burial Ground National Monument. I had never paid attention to the protected areas term before. But i am up to speed now, and in fact have come to a point where currently i think that all such categories ought to be deleted, due to ambiguities in the protection by or of whom, and in ambiguity for the term "protected area" except at the national level when used by the IUCN. I noted earlier that you had put in a definition for areas protected by the state of New York, in "Category:Protected areas in New York" and just now I further see you created the breakout by state at "Category:Protected areas of the United States by state". Could you please take a look at the last 2 topics of discussion in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Protected areas? I am inclined to nominate deletion of all of the categories of protected areas "of" or "in" a given state, in order to focus appropriate attention, but i would hold off if there is actually any discussion between Hmains, you, and me there, instead.
