.Sohom, I just wanted to thank you for your opinion expressed at the MfD discussion regarding Akhand Bharat, regardless of the final outcome of that discussion. Your opinion is even more valuable and important since you are from India, and you look at the issue in question from a civic point of view, instead from a nationalistic/irredentist one... And, completely unrelated – as you are from India, I wanted to ask for your opinion about Celina Jaitly, her activism etc. I myself am a fan or her, from a European's perspective; some years ago, I followed her involvement in activism to repeal Section 377, role in the relaunch of Bombay Dost and related gay rights issues. I also created this userbox about her, a couple of years ago. — Sundostund mppria ( talk / contribs) 07:51, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.
Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima ( submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges ( Cwmhiraeth ( talk · contribs), Epicgenius ( talk · contribs), and Frostly ( talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV ( submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.
Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:
To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron ( talk • she/her), via:

Hello Sohom Datta,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.
Our current top scorers are as follows:
Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.
The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:
The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron ( talk), via MediaWiki message delivery ( talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
The article Boroline you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Boroline for comments about the article, and Talk:Boroline/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article is eligible to appear in the "Did you know" section of the Main Page, you can nominate it within the next seven days. Can you help me better understand how the modules work with Go and Github? I constantly get an error like this. Reading that thread doesn't really help me understand what causes the problem or how to fix it--I tried everything they suggested. The main problem for me is that I don't really understand how Go identifies which modules to download to a local directory, how it knows it has the "right" copy, etc. The documentation I looked at for Go modules is either too detailed or too general. For example, it put this in the go.mod file:
The "v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87" seems to be some version number of the code on Github or a hash # of some sort. How exactly did it come up with that number? If I could better understand the key steps Go uses when it runs a command like "go mod init" or "go mod tidy" when working with code stored on github, that might help. I need to understand the relationship between the original on github and the copy it downloaded, which will help me understand why the local copy is missing something it needs (or some path is incorrect).
I'm more used to "# include" statements of C, where the path is explicit. These implied paths are confusing. -- David Tornheim ( talk) 20:24, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools/v2 v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87
has multiple parts, github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools
denotes the repository, /v2
denotes to Golang that the v2 version of the module was specifically required. The rest of the string is a pseudo version number generated by Golang that denotes the specific commit/state of the module when the module was required. It's of the form v<base_version_prefix>-<timestamp>-<git_commit_id>
. The base version prefix is the last version published in the repository (in this case 2.0.0), the timestamp corresponds to the timestamp of the last commit to the repository (i.e. 5 May 2024 etc) and the commit hash is 1508c8717f87. Google has published a pretty well specified doc about this at
https://go.dev/doc/modules/version-numbers and
https://go.dev/doc/modules/gomod-ref which are also pretty good resources on the topic :)github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools
does not actually have a published v2 version as specified by the string.

require module/path v<any_version_number>
. Based on looking at
https://github.com/DavidTornheim/yapperbot-frs/blob/master/go.mod line 12 doesn't have any version number, and line 13 is getting tripped up because #
is not considered a valid character (A comment string in go.mod would need to start with //
)

require module/path v<any_version_number>
format. Maybe you can switch that line for github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools v0.0.0-20240505230558-e0c68ccf8803
(which is what Golang generates when I try to add ybtools to the fresh project).

Hello, I have today been amending false/unreliable information on a page and my edit was removed with the reason "take it to the talk page". Is this sufficient reason to remove an edit which had sources to back it up? -- Seelers ( talk) 00:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
In general "no longer needed" is not a WP:CSD except in your own userspace, and even then with some exceptions see WP:U1, so you should avoid using it. That does not preclude deletion by listing at XFD, it is merely a reflection of the fact that all CSD are specific and narrow, WP:!G6 is also good reading. In that one specific case WP:RDRAFT means it won't be deleted even at WP:RFD, however in general uselessness is one factor that can be considered when evaluating pages at RFD, WP:TFD, and WP:MFD, thank you. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A165:7AFC:68F9:104D ( talk) 18:22, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi Sohom, I have some questions about formatting numbers. The manual of style seems adamant on using the dot as a decimal separator and comma for thousands, though the international standard says to use spaces for thousands and either of the two options for decimal separators. Is it unacceptable to write 12 345 instead of 12,345? The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator and using it to separate thousands can cause confusion and tends to be less readable. And one other thing: I've seen articles using currency symbols placed before the numeric value. I am aware that this is quite common in the case of the US dollar and the sterling, as these are associated with countries that use this format. This, however, is not the case for the euro, which is always placed after the number (e.g. 2.35 €). The manual of style is fine with symbols being placed after the number in other foreign currencies, but treats the euro as in the case of dollars or pounds. Not to mention that it is simply more logical and readable for the symbol to follow after the amount. Why does Wikipedia have a problem with this or the use of space as a thousands separator? Shouldn't we adhere to international standards rather than country-specific formats, especially in the case of a de facto international language?
Thank you, regards. -- Formatmatters ( talk) 23:30, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

On 29 May 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Boroline, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the antiseptic cream Boroline was marketed to appeal to nationalistic sentiments? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Boroline. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page ( here's how, Boroline), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
