Gerstberger Pines [1] is a 20 acre (8.1 ha) nature preserve owned and managed by the Taylor County Buildings, Grounds, and Parks Department. It is an old growth hemlock, hardwood, white pine forest purchased in 1882 by Ed Gerstberger from the Wisconsin Central Railroad [1]. It was in the Gerstberger family until 1993, when Taylor County purchased it [1].

The oldest tree is an Eastern Hemlock estimated to be 255 years old, and 29 inches in diameter. Eleven White Pines were present when purchased in 1993, of which there are 6 now standing, 200 to 215 years old, with 32 to 38 inches dbh. Only two of these are alive. The oldest red oaks on the site are about 200 years old [1]. Other ancient hardwoods are Yellow Birch, Basswood, and Red Maple.
