WP:BARRIER SummaryDue to regional underrepresentation amongst contributors, it's important to remember that Wikipedia's coverage of non-English topics is still in the pioneering stage—not unlike that of English topics eight or nine years ago—so additional caution should be exercised when handling red links. We'll start to see more of the blanks filled in as Internet penetration increases in the corresponding demographic, which, in the case of India, for example, has approximately doubled from about 60 to 120 million (or from 5% to 10% of the population) since just two years ago. IdentificationAbundant red linksX Deletion discussionsThe notability of topics from developing countries such as China and India is often underestimated in deletion discussions. This is often due to the fact that topics are underrepresented by contributors due to language differences and low Internet penetration in the respective region. Even when articles do have significance, it's not uncommon to see an AfD nomination go something like this:
The problem lies in that English search results are frequently misleading on non-English topics. Determining notabilityDetermining the notability of a subject that exists in little or no English literature may seem difficult or impossible at first, but with a little practice it can be done with ease. Figure out the native nameIf the article includes a native translation, start with that. If you can't ascertain the native name that way, check to see if an article exists in another language Wikipedia project. Consider where the topic originatesEven in developing countries like India where English is relatively common, many articles are only covered by local and regional publications that exclusively use the native language. However, often a plethora of sources can be found just by searching native terms. Interpreting search results in other languagesWhen you do find sources in a language that you do not understand, simply run them by Google Translate. While this method may yield English text anywhere from shattered to nonsensical, it is usually possible to infer at least basic ideas. Textual patterns and key words can be used as clues to piece together a story. Use reverse image searchesph Evaluating foreign materialSites based in other countries may use website formats that have negative connotations in the English-speaking world. Take care not to dismiss what looks like a blog, forum or tabloid at first glance. Resources |
