"A loosely knit group of hippies called the "Rainbow Family" arrived in Waveland soon after Hurricane Katrina. From early September 2005 to early December 2005, they ran the "New Waveland Cafe & Clinic" located in the parking lot of Fred's Dept Store on Hwy 90." Wasn't it a church from Orange Beach that started the Waveland Cafe & Clinic? - Ben
No a Christian group from Bastrop Texas started "The New Wavland Cafe". When taking a break for supplies ran up with one of the Rainbow folks (Felipie) who was scouting for a new site to help (I was in anouther caravan to join him). BCOC asked for help and we helped. It would be more proper to say that BCOC started it but Rainbow volenteered to help them (but ended up being the bigger volenteer) rather than the other way around as it currently states. Has anyone considered writing a section on the city and town history in more depth? Founding date of the city (1972), the establishment of the town or region (from the 1600s?). I know a little about the "ancient history" of some of the early residents, but only because I was born there (as were half of my ancestors). I know less about the more recent history (mayors and other elected people), but that might be an interesting thing to include. I could only name one past mayor though: Garfield Ladner, who was mayor when Camille hit.
Also, does anyone have information about the islands offshore?
I have lots of old photos of Waveland and Bay St. Louis, and some old newspaper articles. I would have to scan the old photos if there is any interest, and I could summarize some of the relevant newspaper articles. I suspect the copyrights have expired on the newspaper articles by now anyway.
