Toyota USA Headquarters?

The economy section of the article mentions Toyota Motor Sales USA as being located in Torrance and the largest employer in the city. If memory serves me correctly though, the Toyota headquarters are located on the east side of Western Avenue which would technically put it geographically in the city of Los Angeles. Of course Harbor Gateway addresses can use Torrance as their postal address and the distinction is small, if I'm right I'm guessing it's LA and not Torrance levying corporate taxes which in my view is an important economic distinction. 174.125.32.97 ( talk) 05:10, 25 April 2011 (UTC) reply

UPDATE 05/04/2011: The Toyota USA Headquarters are located west of Western Avenue, placing them in City of Torrance proper.

Toyota Motor Corporation's wholly owned North American subsidiary's operations are headquartered on a property that occupies the main Southern California corporate campus, the entirety of which is enclosed by the city limits of the City of Torrance, California. [1]

Toyota Motor Corporation, N.A. was created in 2002(?) as a result of the consolidation of Toyota Motor Sales and Toyota Financial Services. [2]

Refinery Picture

That photo of the refinery with the American Flag is located at the BP/ARCO refinery in Carson and would badly give the allusion this is located in Torrance. It needs to be replaced with an actual Mobil Refinery picture in Torrance. noble experiment ( talk) 19:57, 20 September 2008 (UTC) reply

--Agreed. That picture is not the ExxonMobil Refinery, and the caption suggests that there are multiple refineries in Torrance, which is not the case. Residency criteria

Are there any facts behind Quentin Tarantino's residency? (unsigned comment by Icicles, 30 May 2006)

When someone added Tarantino to the list of notable residents about a month ago I did a brief web search. He has mentioned in at least one interview that he lived "in Torrance," but attending Narbonne HS (per his Wikipedia article) would seem to indicate that he probably lived in the unincorporated part of LA County that lies within the Torrance PO zone.
If we're going to adhere strictly to the city limits, I believe Michelle Kwan has the same issue. -- Engineer Bob 19:34, 30 May 2006 (UTC) reply

What about Daewon Song and Snoop Dogg? I thought one was from Gardena and the other was from Long Beach, didnt he go to Milikan High? Is anyone sure they are from Torrance? I see Daewon at San Pedro skatepark sometimes, I'll ask him. Does his word count as a source?

Neighborhoods

I agree someone should make one and here's a little description: The Hollywood Riviera and towards Palos Verdes are upper-income class and has many condominums/apartment complexes facing the beachfront, the western neighborhoods facing Redondo Beach (Clifton and El Nido) are mainly home to middle-class home owners and the Northern part facing Gardenia and the eastern part facing Carson (actually the L.A. city limits) are more blue collar or working-class residents. Torrance had suffered from the statewide closures of government contractor plants with the national recession of the early 1990s, then a real estate price hike in the 1999/2000 (esp. the Beach cities) made Torrance a popular housing market until the "mortgage failure crisis" in the late 2000's.

Torrance has a high level of racial diversity and notably a city built on tolerance of gays/lesbians, minority groups and political ideas. Torrance has one of the largest Japanese American communities in the U.S. dating back to the early 1900's, along with other Asian Americans like Koreans, Filipinos, ethnic Chinese and Southeast Asians came in later decades. Also large numbers of Latinos, descendants of Southern European nationalities and African-Americans had much freedom to live where they wished before the civil rights era (1950's). I was told many American Indians live in Torrance as a result of Bureau of Indian Affairs relocation programs, mostly from the Cherokee tribe of Oklahoma. + 71.102.53.48 ( talk) 06:03, 8 May 2008 (UTC) reply

I disagree with the comment of "high level of racial diversity"; it is more nuanced than that. Historically, Torrance was quite supportive of Japanese Americans, tolerant of Hispanics, and antagonistic towards African Americans. The old Hispanic area - the "Pueblo District" - is near the Exxon Plant, is not a pleasant area. Forty years ago, African Americans were not welcome to live in Torrance, despite the Barrows v. That is true! I'm going by my maternal family's experience growing up in the south side of Redondo Beach and Torrance in the 1950s/60s in the civil rights era affecting the community as much it did in the nation. In the 1920s & 30s, the KKK held some city council seats in Torrance fought off blacks and Jews for purchasing residences and real estate tracts were ethnically segregated until the end of WWII, and sometimes complaints about Portuguese people moving into town at the time. In any community not just Torrance, immigrants with a foreign culture will be first met with disapproval for being "different" from the locals. I agree that throughout Los Angeles and beyond there were many real estate covenants restricting the purchase of homes by minorities, but I feel that a comment about Torrance's affiliation with the KKK shouldn't be included in the city's Wikipedia page without a proper reference or citation. Back in the 1990s, I remember Mark Fuhrman (an L.A.P.D. detective involved in the OJ Simpson trial) made some remarks about Torrance being L.A.'s "lone white bastion" or something like that. Census and references

After browsing through this article, it seems as though the census section of Torrance, CA is highly underrepresented and half of them focus on two specific minorities. This section not only mentions only the 2000 and 2010 results of the census, but also only acknowledges the Japanese and Korean demographics of the city. There is not enough information about other demographics, or maybe lack of, of Torrance to neutrally understand the different cultural components of the city.

Also, after taking a look at a few citations, it is evident that there are many citations whose links no longer work. For example, citation 15 that support the boundaries of Torrance no longer work. Also, citation 16 which states that the city is under review for being established as a historical district links reader to a webpage that no longer works. In addition, it should also be updated to state whether the city is now labeled a historical district or not. Another citation link that no longer works is citation 61, which supports the budget and spending of the local government.
