After leaving Tombstone, Arizona, where he'd taken part in the famous Gunfight at the OK Corral, Wyatt Earp and his wife, Josephine, operated the Northern, a saloon, in Tonopah. After only one year, he sold his saloon and continued his travels.
Correction: The Northern was, and still is, in Goldfield, 26 miles south of Tonopah. The saloon was operated by Tex Wickard. Earp had little or nothing to do with the operation, although there are some indications that he may have been a pit boss for a short time.

I believe that several of these towns: Tonopah, Searchlight, Amboy used to be served by the old US Hy 66, and have suffered loss of business due to an Interstate (probably 40), but it's from memory and I can't find details. As I recall, Needles, CA was also on Rte 66 and I think it's on the new Interstate. Carrionluggage 04:44, 21 January 2006 (UTC) reply

Pronunciation

It would be beneficial for someone to post a pronounciation key here for the name of the town. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.120.35.7 ( talkcontribs)

I live in Tonopah, it's pronounce Tone-ah-pa not sure how that would look in the fancy phonetic jargon used in dictionaries, but you people can figure that out.

Also, above someone talks about route 66, that's Tonopah Arizona, not here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.45.236.170 ( talk) 05:47, 6 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Song

Tonopah is mentioned in the song Willin written by Lowell George of little feat and made popular by Linda Ronstadt in her breakthrough album Heart Like a Wheel. The line is “I’ve been from Tucson to Tucumcari, Tahachapie to Tonopah.” Seemed worth mentioning. TJ Wash ( talk) 00:24, 4 January 2020 (UTC) reply

Etymology? or Toponymy? Isn't the use of the term Etymology incorrect for this section?

@ Reywas92: edited the Tonopah, Nevada page changing a long-standing section name of "Toponymy and Pronunciation" to "Etymology and Pronunciation" with the edit summary of "the unnecessary pedantry, etymology is still perfectly accurate". This change is incorrect.

Note" Reywas92's edit is unnecessary pedantry. It is not a sufficient justification for making this edit. In any case, the edit is incorrect.

The term for the study of place names (like the name for a state) is " Toponymy". By definition, toponymy involves the study of place names.

Whereas, etymology is the study of the origin and evolution of a word's semantic meaning across time. It is the science involved in studying the history of a word or phrase shown by tracing its development and relationships. To claim that etymology involves the naming of a place is not correct.

Toponymy and etymology are related. Toponymy is the study of place names, their origins, meanings, usage, and types. Etymology is the study of the origin and history of words. Toponymy is a branch of onomastics, the study of proper names of all kinds. Etymology is one of the aspects of toponymy, as it deals with the linguistic evolution of place names.

Clearly "toponymy" is the appropriate word for the section.

Based on this logic I am reverting Reywas92's edit to reestablish the correct term "Toponymy".

No, this section includes the lingustic origin of the word and its root meanings, so etymology would not be an inaccurate description. Reywas92 Talk 02:06, 19 April 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Osomite: Based on this logic I am reverting Reywas92's edit to reestablish the correct term "Toponymy". That's not how WP:BRD works. You made your bold edit. It was reverted. So you must discuss the matter and get consensus for your change. That discussion process does not include "see, I'm right so I'm changing it back to my version." It involves waiting for the consensus to form before moving forward. WikiDan61 ChatMe! ReadMe!! 22:29, 21 April 2023 (UTC) reply
