Things to do

I've started the page, with basic information. If someone doesn't get to these things first, tomorrow I'll fill in the chapters in each one, and then start summarizing the volumes. If someone could identify the cover characters for vol 21 & 22, I'd appreciate it: frankly, I can't tell many of Takaya's characters apart. Also, we need a graphic of the first volume cover -- probably of the first Japanese cover from Amazon.co.jp. — Quasirandom ( talk) 08:30, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply

I haven't been able to find what chapters are in which of the last couple volumes - if anyone could assist here, I'd appreciate it. — Quasirandom ( talk) 19:27, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply

Wikipedia shows its cultural biases on its sleeve

Note that there are two English language editions (North America and East Asia), and the list currently shows only one. Not to mention, omits all the other language editions. The current template is not quite flexible enough to accomodate more than one license. If/when we/I/someone manages to dig up ISBNs/dates for the other English edition, we can figure out how to adapt what we have to include them. — Quasirandom ( talk) 08:40, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply

I've confirmed the Singapore editions through Australian online sellers (volume 1 is ISBN  978-981-260-200-8 -- and dang that looks odd, punctuated symmetrically, but that's how it goes). I've not yet found a source for the publications dates I consider reliable, or at least confirmed, so don't yet have to work out how to include them. Oh, also, the Tokyopop editions seem also to be available Down Under -- need to confirm the real area of licensing (after all, they may not be quite licit). — Quasirandom ( talk) 17:30, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply
Nrg. Should have checked this before: the Tokyopop editions are sold through Amazon.co.uk. — Quasirandom ( talk) 17:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply
Not that that's definitive: it's not uncommon to be able to find editions on Amazon outside of the region they're actually published in. Still, I'm not finding one way or another a confirmation the region of Tokyopop's license. Will keep working at it. — Quasirandom ( talk) 18:38, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply
BTW, Tokyopop's license does encompass the UK, though I have not directly cited this. — Quasirandom ( talk) 21:59, 20 February 2008 (UTC) reply
So just to document things: Chuang Yi Fruits Basket page doesn't list the release dates; Madman's page of the AU imports of those editions lists what seems to be dates of arrival in Australia; for the last volumes, these coincide, but I can't yet confirm the early volumes do the same. Note, btw, that Madman lists the ISBN-13s, which for most volumes are the equivalents of the ISBN-10s Chuang Yi lists; when I add these to the table, I'll use Madman's, because I can confirm them through Australian booksellers. — Quasirandom ( talk) 19:26, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply
Info added. I'm not entirely happy with the table heading -- turns out the AU/NZ import editions of the SG English translations have slightly different ISBNs (off by one digit, usually), which means technically, I've the column's misnamed. But I am, at this moment, a bear of very little brain who cannot work out the correct solution should be. After I finish filling in summaries, perhaps. — Quasirandom ( talk) 21:54, 19 February 2008 (UTC) reply
Here's a thought: for that column, how about Australasia? Even though technically Singapore is outside the boundry? No? — Quasirandom ( talk) 19:33, 22 February 2008 (UTC) reply

Summary length

Just to note as I fill in the descriptions, that I'm a little uncomfortable with how long some are. I'm more or less managing to keep to at most 2 sentences per chapter, but it's tough -- for a supposedly atmospheric and digressive series, Fruits Basket is actually very densely plotted, especially as the series progresses. When conversation, internal monologue, and flashbacks intercut across several pages, it's hard to reduce it to a single plot point. (The series is also elaborately plotted: the true significance of a visual element on the first page isn't revealed till volume 15, in a way that suggests Takaya-sensei knew the object's history from if not the start, at least within a few chapters. It's impressive.) All while keeping to reasonably graceful prose.

All of which is by way of saying, if anyone sees details or phrases they feel aren't needed, without sacreficing clarity, please feel free to snip away. — Quasirandom ( talk) 22:09, 20 February 2008 (UTC) reply

Oy. When the curse starts breaking, it's even harder to write succinctly. My first draft of chapter 115 is 8 sentences. Grumble grumble. — Quasirandom ( talk) 19:27, 22 February 2008 (UTC) reply

Refs discussion

I can't find a source for the Polish edition :( -- KrebMarkt 08:00, 19 May 2009 (UTC) reply

Yeah, I've had trouble sourcing anything Polish. Heck, I have better luck sourcing Thai editions, and I don't even know their alphabet. Thanks for starting on this -- it's been on my list to get back to doing. (Which means I should return to working on it for Yotsuba&!, no doubt.) — Quasirandom ( talk) 14:53, 19 May 2009 (UTC) reply
