The Honolulu Symphony is NOT the official orchestra of the City and County of Honolulu. You are confused with The Royal Hawaiian Band.

The writer of the above comment is correct; the Honolulu Symphony is NOT the official orchestra of the City and County of Honolulu. The Royal Hawaiian Band, founded by Henri Berger, is the official wind band of the City and County of Honolulu. Berger did not found the Honolulu Symphony; a group of music lovers (The Honolulu Symphony Society) founded it in 1902. The Honolulu Symphony has claimed for many years that is was established in 1900. There is no evidence of this in newspapers or other primary sources around 1900. -- Dale E. I found your edit to the Honolulu Symphony very intriguing, but considerably out of place. First of all, you have pasted the quoted article into the References section, where it certainly doesn't belong. If it is relevant to the article, it should be in the article, and the reference (the citation) should be in the References section.

However, more troublesome is that this is a quote from five years ago. The question is: is this an historical curiosity, or is this an ongoing problem? Are claims of sexual harassment still current? Are they affecting the current state of the orchestra - perhaps weakening the hand of the union in the collective bargaining process? Do you have any newer information on these claims (have they been settled)? You need a reference - your personal knowledge is not enough.

Since the HSO is an organization of living people, and Jason Pell's family are living people, the Wikipedia rules regarding biographies of living persons applies. This means we apply a very high standard of documentation before including any information that could be construed as defamatory. Therefore, it behooves us to delete this posthaste.

The quote as it currently appears needs to go. If we can find something relevant and current to use in its stead, that would be excellent.

Name issues

There seems to be terrible confusion about the name of this orchestra, even within the organisation itself. Their website home page proclaims them to be the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra, and that's the form used in their copyright thing at the bottom.

But on the same page we read references to the Hawaii Symphony Pops (not Hawai'i). And on the Contact Page, it's the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra (not Hawai'i). That could just be an oversight by the developer of what is a truly woeful website.

So, that's the first issue: Is it Hawai'i or Hawaii?

Elsewhere in the website the orchestra is generally called the Hawai'i Symphony (without the word Orchestra). That's understandable, as it's common parlance to refer to the X Symphony Orchestra by its full name the first time, but to generally shorten it to the X Symphony thereafter. That is not inconsistent with the orchestra being the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (but see also Side issue below).

So, to our article. It was Honolulu Symphony but Ravpapa moved it to Hawaii Symphony. Seems to me that the word Orchestra is part of the name and should be there. And the evidence would favour Hawai'i over Hawaii. So, I'm proposing a move to Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra, with Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Hawaii Symphony as redirects.

Side issue: We refer to the orchestra as a "symphony" throughout the article. That seems to be a particularly American practice (and this is an American orchestra), but in the rest of the world, a symphony is a piece of music. The group of musicians who play it are called an "orchestra". It's one thing to call the X Symphony Orchestra the X Symphony, but to say "the symphony did this; the symphony did that" is going too far, imo. The logical extreme would be to say things like (in reference to a particular musical composition) "The symphony first played the symphony in 1984". Interesting question. The name of the state in which it resides, is "Hawaii". However, Hawaiians prefer the spelling "Hawai'i", as that is how it is spelled and pronounced in the Hawai'ian language. I will try to clarify this issue during the next week. I happen to be in Hawaii (or Hawai'i, if you prefer) at the moment, so I am in a pretty good position to make the enquiry.
As for symphony/orchestra, feel free to correct as you see fit. As a speaker of American English, "The symphony played the symphony" seems fine, but I bow to your Aussie judgement in thse matters. -- Ravpapa ( talk) 04:19, 13 April 2012 (UTC) reply
Note than an ʻOkina is no longer the same character as the vertical apostrophe (which used to be commonly used with typewriters and on early computers, since the current character [Unicode character U+02BB MODIFIER LETTER TURNED COMMA ( ʻ )] was not available). This wrinkle creates yet another redirect of course. (I would not be surprised the website is "woeful".
