"Death" of the Great Barrier Reef

Since this is outside my area of knowledge I'm not attempting to add this in any way. However, social media has been buzzing with declarations of the reef being officially "dead". Now, that's just social media, and the links I've seen don't appear to be the best, POV-wise. Is there any basis to this? (And I'm hoping not for obvious reasons). Have actual reputable sources covered this at all, and if so, is it worth mentioning? It's recentism, but I did come to the article to see if there was any non-hyperbolic info on this, other than the sections on pollution and bleaching. freshacconci talk to me 16:24, 14 October 2016 (UTC) reply

Found my own answer, of sorts. Apparently, scientists are taking note of the social media reports and are not happy about the claims. Should this be included, somehow? I've seen this around as well - this page is locked to all but autoconfirmed, but I suggest adding the current-related tag since this has popped up throughout social media today. I added it in without much of a rationale (my bad), but I'll add it back in since this covers my concerns (the current related tag lets viewers know this information is changing and not necessarily reputable). Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system[1][2] composed of over 2,900 individual reefs[3] and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi).[4][5] The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms.[6] This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps.[7] It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.[1][2] CNN labelled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world.[8] The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.[9]

A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.   • Does not matter for GA, but if the statements are not controversial (like the size of the reef), the citations can just be in the article instead of the intro.
  • The management section needs additional citations, I can provide specifics if need be
  • Address the citation needed and unreliable source tags
  • Expand citations to include at least publisher and access date

Missing information that contradicts global warming threat

The reef moves every year and where it is now used to be above ground. The reef can recover quite easily from change. However there doesn't appear to be a contrary side of the article than of that to climate change. There is even a separate article for climate change on the reef. These are common to the reasons I don't use Wikipedia. [1]

Potential contradiction regarding effects of temperature.

There are many places in this article where there is discussion of the dire effects of increasing water temperatures on the Reef, and how the reef itself is in danger from them. That would appear to be totally at odds with this statement:

"In addition, approximately 400,000 years ago there was a particularly warm interglacial period with higher sea levels and a 4 °C (7 °F) water temperature change." So, the reef survived a 4°C increase then, but is in danger from a current change of less than half of that now?? Reef Master Guide Program

In 2019, the Great Barrier Reef Park Authority in relation with Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators and Tourism and Events Queensland created the Master Reef Guide program. Master Reef Guides were trained in a range of areas such as public speaking, enhancing visitor experience, and the power of interpretation. By providing up-to-date information on the Reef, sharing stories of the magical World Heritage Area, Master Reef Guided explain what visitor can do to make a difference. Those guides would be present great barrier reef tour operators and provide a way for visitors and locals to understand both the challenges and opportunities for the Great Barrier Reef.

Outdated information on mass coral bleaching events of the GBR

Please update the information on mass bleaching events of the reefs in the lead and the section "Environmental threats".

I have added this info to 2020 in science:

  • Scientists report the results of a survey of the Great Barrier Reef. For the first time, all its three regions experienced severe bleaching. [2] [3] On March 25 – day three of the nine-day survey – they reported its third mass bleaching event within five years. [4]

In December 2020 researchers based at the Great Barrier Reef have discovered that a new method of preservation embracing in vitro fertilization technology had shown promise in reef restoration. The method involves collection of coral egg and sperm during the yearly spawn at the reef, which are then used in specially designed enclosures to encourage the growth of coral larvae. July 2021 observations from Australian Government scientists are now available https://www.aims.gov.au/reef-monitoring/gbr-condition-summary-2020-2021 and indicate that coral cover levels have returned to 1985 levels. Yes, that reference to feet and miles seems very odd. Australia uses the metric system and as a diver here, I have never used miles or feet to describe the coral marine habitat. Contradiction in article - first European to sight the GBR

The "Discover" and naming section mentions James Cook being the first European to sight the GBR in 1770, but the "Human use" section states that Louis de Bougainville found the reef in 1768 but did not claim it. One of these statements must be off, I believe. Either Louis did not "sight" the GBR in 1768, or James wasn't the first European to sight it.
