Virtus is not a woman - Virtus is a man. It is not a woman depicted on the Seal of the Commonwealth, it is a man wearing simple clothes (or a commoner) conquering an oppressive tyrant. This article should be fixed.
Virtus may be male, but he (or she) is _depicted as female_ on the state flag; specifically, she is depicted as "an Amazon". (Remember, this article is about the Virginia State Flag, not about Virtus.) The little jpeg doesn't really do it justice, but if you look at an actual, full-size flag, it's an obvious woman. I'd mention that the official description of the flag refers to Virtus, but uses the pronoun "her" and "she" throughout. *Unfortunately*, that official description was apparently "repealed" in late 2005. I wonder if they officially set Virtus back to male; I'm not exactly certain how to look up the relevent changes, so you may very well be correct. At any rate, I won't change the article, since I'm not /absolutely/ sure as to the /current/ state of the flag. (I grew up in Virginia, and there was a huge honkin' state flag on the basement wall, right above the computer monitor. After a decade of staring at it while waiting for games to load or programs to compile, I've become pretty familiar with it. Though, admittedly, it was a 1970's-era flag.)

It should be mentioned in the article that the state motto of VA was shouted out by John Wilkes Booth after the Lincoln assasination --

That information is not relevant to the Flag of Virginia, but is most appropriately mentioned in the
Sic semper tyrannis article. --

Certain things on the flag
What does the boob represent? Or was it just a mistake? Shouldn't the flag represent the state? It getsmme confused on what the boob represents, and the lady killing the man. It makes me thik that Virginia is freaky. Can someone do some research on this?

The woman is Virtus, she is killing a man that represents tyranny. The bare breast, well, I know earlier seals have it, but I am sure this was probably common in Rome.

The article mentions that the present flag was adopted at the beginning of the American Civil War, in 1861, presumably after Virginia's secession from the Union. Does anyone know anything about the flag's history prior to the War? A history section would be a great way to bump this article up from start/stub class. In any case, I'll see what I can dig up. Cheers,
