How to edit

Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.

George Mason University

It's in Fairfax County. Look at the city map I linked. The university is well beyond the city limits. The fact that the Town of Fairfax bought the land to the state does not mean it was then within the town limits or that they got to keep it when the the town became a city.-- Wehwalt 00:45, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

External links

Hi Corsulian, you've made some good improvements to this page, but I'm going to restore the link to the map of local sex offenders. I think a common reason to read a city/community article like this one is to evaluate it when considering moving there. In that light, this is a reasonably good external reference. JD Lambert( T| C) 18:40, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

I can agree with that--it just seems that it would also leave the door open for links to local school ratings and more. The link is already available on the "Fairfax County" page. Corsulian ( talk) 15:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Fairfax outside of Fairfax City

I live in an municipality denoted by the USPS as "Fairfax, VA" (zip code 22033) but it is in Fairfax County, rather than the City of Fairfax. This "Fairfax" is neither included in the list of unincorporated communities nor discussed on the Fairfax County article. I think there should be a distinction made on this article because it's currently excluding a whole section of Fairfax County. -- Kaleb.G ( talk) 18:05, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

What's wrong with including any relevant info in the Fairfax County article?-- Wehwalt ( talk) 18:10, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I added a note about this article referring to the independent city only. There are articles on the unincorporated areas that have a "Fairfax, Va" mailing address:
Most of the 22033 zip code is commonly considered part of the Fair Lakes area (and maybe a small part could be considered its own area of "Penderbrook"). Corsulian ( talk) 14:17, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
The new note at the top is good. I just want to make sure there's clarification for the ambiguous naming. I think any further clarification on the 22033 zip code area can be done on the county page if needed. Thanks -- Kaleb.G ( talk) 03:01, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Historic Sites in the County enclave

I moved this line, "The Old Courthouse, and the Old Jail, lie within the county enclave within the City." here as it doesn't fit very well with the article. It's also not particularly good grammar. It is true but I think a master of tables should include it on the historic sites table. Corsulian ( talk) 17:44, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, fit in then, dont delete it in the meantime. I have reverted. If you delete relevant info it may be gone for good.-- Wehwalt ( talk) 23:37, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

More External links

eStarland.com is located in Fairfax, I think it may be of help to include it along with other businesses. Just a tought. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kikenovic ( talkcontribs) 15:54, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Fairfax City Government

This article talks about the Fairfax County exclave within Fairfax City, and talks about the county buildings within the exclave, but is silent about the government structure of Fairfax City (as I recall, the main building is on Armstrong Ave., and the web address is http://www.fairfaxva.gov). This subject should be addressed. -- Tim Sabin ( talk) 21:13, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Climate section??? WT_

Why the bloody hell is there a climate section for a city this size? I have been a long-time resident of the area, and this, with only differing degrees of UHI, is not an SF Bay for microclimate! My last, but perhaps equally (if not more) important point is that those figures are for Dulles Airport, many miles to the west of FFX and probably represents a (comparative terms) absurdly cold spot conducive to depressing lows. -- H XL 何献龙 04:41, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Health

The "Health" section is about men in Fairfax County, not the City. The section should either be eliminated or moved, along with its reference. -- Tim Sabin ( talk) 13:12, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Who is Jonathan Main?

There's no article about him. Notability? -- Tim Sabin ( talk) 18:28, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

That's probably the person who made the edit (generally in a case like this, a high-school student). I'd simply have reverted it after noting that google finds no useful hits. (If there were a possibility that there's a genuine notable person, tagging is appropriate) TEDickey ( talk) 20:33, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Also, observe that the previous edit by this IP was nonconstructive TEDickey ( talk) 20:35, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Requested Move

I see the Fairfax County wiki, but this page title needs to be changed to explicitly reference the "City of Fairfax". When people in the DMV area talk about "Fairfax", they are referring to the entire county, not the City of Fairfax. Nobody in Maryland DC, or Washington Post writers are referencing the tiny City of Fairfax, when they are referring to the huge suburbs of Fairfax. (No they do not say Fairfax County, they just say Fairfax, Loudon, Prince George, etc.). Fairfax Little League borders include City or Fairfax, Mantua, George Mason. The City of Fairfax, has it own rich (civil war) history and stand alone government. City of Fairfax has it's own Zip Code and Census identity (as citing on this page). WIKI would be best severed being with the City of Fairfax having it's own page - consist with it's government title . There was massive confusion in the Press concerning the Mayor of the City of Fairfax, as being the Major of Fairfax County. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.16.98.181 ( talk) 20:57, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Fairfax, Virginia City of Fairfax, Virginia – The area surrounding the City of Fairfax is officially named "Fairfax". These areas are distinct and should therefore have distinct Wikipedia pages. For example, the current "Fairfax, Virginia" page states that George Mason University is located within the City of Fairfax. However, this is not the case. George Mason University is located within the surrounding area of Fairfax in Fairfax County as this map from the City of Fairfax' website shows: http://www.fairfaxva.gov/home/showdocument?id=1226. Similarly, the Fairfax Museum and Visitor's Center is located within the City of Fairfax, not the Fairfax that is part of Fairfax County. Other distinctions, such as demographic and other distinctions, cannot be made by on the one hand, stating this page discusses the City of Fairfax, while, on the other, discussing the surrounding area of Fairfax. It is very confusing to the reader and dilutes the unique characteristics of each area. Further, "Fairfax" is officially the county seat of Fairfax County, and should be discussed as such. Historyandhope ( talk) 17:34, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Oppose. The county is not referred to as Fairfax, Virginia. The hatnote at the top of the page can redirect wayward readers. —  AjaxSmack  01:39, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
  • Oppose: per all above. - NeutralhomerTalk • 09:04, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
  • Oppose per above. I can understand your rationale here and even sympathize, but in this situation we have to go by WP:COMMONNAME. People in the state almost never refer to Fairfax County as just "Fairfax" - that's usually what they say when they're referring to the city itself. I imagine that it's likely referred to this way outside of the state as well. Tokyogirl79LVA ( talk) 12:45, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Fairfax, Virginia/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

This article contains little information and minimal citations. It does not qualify for B status. It is mostly a collection of copy-pasted statisics from uncited sources, and needs more citations of theese statistics as well as other information, such as a stronger history section or more details on its government or law.

Concealed editing

@ CommunityRelationsFX: Using "Created a section on elected officials, listing the positions elected by city voters. This replaces information about single elected official" to explain the was all fine, except for the part where you dishonestly concealed deleting the entire drugs-for-sex scandal section. Abel ( talk) 16:14, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Wrong Fairfax

The city derives its name from Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, who was awarded 5,000,000 acres (20,000 km2) of land in northern Virginia by King Charles.

The 6th Lord was born long after the death of both the Charleses. Must be someone else. Valetude ( talk) 07:15, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

The existing source doesn't mention the 5 million acres, but says he was the grandson of Culpeper/ Thomas Colepeper, 2nd Baron Colepeper (who apparently was the grantee). Some additional sources and clarification might be nice. TEDickey ( talk) 17:48, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

GMU largest
