TompaDompa, an interesting idea! I'm still pondering it; according to the OED, aeroplane with this meaning was first used in 1868 (supplanting an earlier use meaning "lifting surface"), and a study by Svante Stubelius traces its use from 1873:
[3], but "an early use of the word" would still be fine, even if the SFE's "very early appearance of the word in English" is a bit exaggerated. —
