So what's notable about this earthquake

Nice article but in California these happen all the time. What's notable about this earthquake?

"It was the strongest eartquake ever to occur in the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone " If we were in California, maybe not, but in Alabama? It's very notable. JodyB 22:08, 24 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Largest earthquake

The GSA page states this earthquake was the largest in the Eastern Tennessee Seismc Zone, but the USGS poster states that the largest was a 1973 4.6 earthquake near Knoxville. The GSA page also gives a magnitude of 4.9 for the 2003 earthquake which disagrees with the 4.6 given by the USGS references. For now I've left it that both the 1973 Knoxville and 2003 Ft. Payne earthquakes share the "biggest" title at the USGS numbers of 4.6. Other thoughts, analysis, references to point one way or the other? Thanks. Proposed Deletion

I have removed the Proposed Deletion tag in accordance with the process described in WP:DP Item 3.3 Proposed deletion > If you disagree. The article was proposed for deletion under WP:NOT#NEWS. A review of these criteria does not seem to support deletion. Items that may be excluded such as “Routine news coverage of such things as announcements, sports, and tabloid journalism” do not apply, nor does the report form the basis for any biography of a living person. The editor proposing deletion correctly stated the following regarding the event: Minor earthquake, no deaths or injuries, minor damages. Though “minor” in comparison with the overall world wide spectrum of earthquakes, the earthquake was quite significant and notable for its location. I wholeheartedly agree that such an earthquake would not be notable for southern California, elsewhere in the Pacific Rim or other areas of high seismic activity. However, given its occurrence in an area not commonly thought of as earthquake-prone, the resulting public reaction, wide media coverage, and professional geological publications results in the earthquake clearly meeting the five criteria of WP:NOTE > General notability guideline. Therefore I disagree with the proposed deletion.

I appreciate editor User:Jklamo bringing attention to this article and forcing an objective review of areas where the article can be improved. Thank you. Civilengtiger ( talk) 18:45, 19 May 2008 (UTC) reply
