Sentence that I'm having trouble interpreting

I'm 95% sure this sentence is ungrammatical. But I'm not sure how to fix it. If no one else wants to fix it I might come back to it. "The tradition is that of already existing material a special item or episode is produced and presented at the convention to prove the makers are not out of ideas and to experiment."
