I've rewritten his biography, based upon web research, together with liner notes from Marie-Claire Alain's Erato CD-set (Erato-2202-45402-2 + 2292-45508-2) and Helga Schauerte's Motette CD-set (Motelle CD-11301 + CD-11311). Alain's and Schauerte's notes do not coincide completely in every detail, and I've tried to keep the text in the middle-of-the-road where they disagree. I've retranslated the dedication from the Litanies but I'm not sure that I've translated the last line's delicious ambiguity very well. Suggestions welcome. Does anybody know if any of Jehan Alain's photos and drawings can be scanned and used here? Copyright information is difficult to locate. Next job is to write something useful about some of his works. Anybody up for that?

Is there any more information about Jehan Stéfan and the sources for his researches into Alain's works? The list as presented, while excellent, would benefit from some external support which is more substantial than the copies (which is all I've been able to find with google).
Robindch 14:54, 8 August 2006 (UTC)reply
All the allusions and references to Jehan Stefan must be deleted : this guy, who uses a pseudonym, is not a famous musicologist at all. He just wrote a few words on an Internet forum. He is absolutely not notable, his work is recognized by nobody. I will undertake the deletion of his absurdity catalog soon if nobody did it by then.

Do you have the AWV catalog to include in their place? I'm not a musicologist and I'm not in much of a position to judge the issue one way or the other.
Robindch 21:48, 22 July 2007 (UTC)reply
Unfortunately, I'm not a musicologist, I'm just musically interested by Alain's works, and I haven't got the AWV catalog. But using Google, the only thing I'm *really* certain about, is that mentionning the name of Jehan Stefan is out-subject and nonrelevant ; his work was only to spread his catalog all over the Internet thanks to Wikipedia, although it is a complete
OR. To finish, in order not to lower him to much, I don't translate you what he wrote
here...

Having been away from wiki for a while, I see that my whole-page edit from August 2006 was cut up by an anon on 2008-04-21 and days following -- see the diff
here. Unless there's any reasonable objection, over the next week or two, I'll revert to the version of 2008-02-01, together with the useful edits that have been made since then. I'd also like to remove the "JS" catalog entries as they appear to be used nowhere else, and update the remainder from what I imagine is the definitive list on the Jehan Alain
Website. Comments welcome.

Your version is by far superior, and I'll go ahead and do it myself, if you're not around (it's already September). I came to the article wanting to see if it contained details of his death in action, which was a heroic one (reminding me a bit of
Albéric Magnard, who probably would have been better off leaving the scene). Nicolas Slonimsky has an account of it in some detail in his innocently-named Book of Musical Anecdotes.
Antandrus (talk) 23:24, 14 September 2008 (UTC)reply
I've gone ahead and done it. I expanded the account of his death a bit, using Slonimsky and the current article in the
New Grove (he received the Croix de Guerre for his action).

I've added a request for additional references. Does anyone have a reference for the story mentioned about the supposed "original text" to Alain's "Litanies"? I can't find anything else that mentions this story anywhere else on the internet, and I think it should be deleted if no one has a proper citation for this quote. --
