Do we have a citation for the assertion that "[Ash] is loosely based on Red..."? I certainly believe it, but I'm not sure if it would fall under a
WP:BLUE situation or not, since one could argue their only main similarity is their place as Pokémon protagonists of the anime and (some) games respectively. I saw the same assertion
here, but they didn't have a citation either. Has it just been reasonably assumed, or do we have a note from one of the creators saying "We roughly based Ash on Red"?

The sentence "Ash also became the World Champion titled as Monarch meaning he is the strongest Pokémon Trainer in the World after Winning the World Coronation Series after defeating Leon" could be edited to:
"Ash also became the World Champion, titled as the 'Monarch', after defeating Leon in the World Coronation Series (an yearly event in which Trainers from around the world participate in, including regional Champions). He's officially the strongest Pokémon Trainer in the world."

Orange League title
The infobox lists him as the Pokémon Champion of the Orange League three times on equal terms with his Alola League Champion title, but I believe it's worth noting that the term "Champion" is only used in the Orange League in the English dub, whereas in the original Japanese he's simply given the title of "Honored Trainer" (even then, I don't believe the dub ever states that victory made Ash "Champion", although Drake's Japanese title of Head Leader is translated as Champion on a few occasions).

Please add this at the end of "Kalos League controversy".
Ash subsequently won the Alola League in 2019.[1]103.73.183.59 (

103.73.183.59 You added title in the reference After 22 years, Ash Ketchum has finally become a Pokemon Master but he didn't, he won World Championship, becoming Pokémon Master is different.

That is the title of the source article, though...

I removed the line His English name is derived from the Japanese name (as the letters 'ash' are included in 'Satoshi') and his English motto is derived from the Japanese motto (as the letters 'Gotta catch 'em all!' are included in 'Pokémon getto da ze!'). from the intro. I couldn't find the derivation of 'Ash' from 'Satoshi' in the article references or from any reliable source, and the claim about the motto derivation is, as written, wrong on its face.

I think what it means to say is "His last name is derived from the English motto "Gotta Catch 'Em All".

Yes, I still plan on reviewing this, but I'll need just a bit longer as I'm working on my own GA and reviewing another soon. λNegativeMP1 05:29, 18 February 2024 (UTC)reply
I'm sorry for the constant waiting, every time that I get the chance to review this article it slips my mind when my time frees up. I still plan on reviewing it soon, ping me either here or on Discord if I don't do it today or tomorrow. λNegativeMP1 19:33, 27 February 2024 (UTC)reply
Checked the article for the quickfail criteria per
WP:GAFAIL, and there is nothing in this article that would warrant a quickfail. No copyright violation signs, no cleanup banners or tags, and no edit warring. Prose review coming soon (I mean it this time, you won't have to wait 19 more days, I promise). λNegativeMP1 23:35, 29 February 2024 (UTC)reply
Prose review
"In the English dub, he was voiced by Veronica Taylor in the first eight seasons and has been voiced by Sarah Natochenny since the ninth season." → "In the English dub, he was voiced by Veronica Taylor in the first eight seasons and Sarah Natochenny afterwards."
Move the third paragraph to be the second one (basically, move the criticism to before how popular he got)
"Named after creator Satoshi Tajiri, Satoshi, whose name can be taken to mean "wisdom" or "reason", was designed by Atsuko Nishida, and intended to represent how Tajiri was as a child, obsessed with catching bugs, reflecting who he was as a kid." → "Ash was design by Atsuko Nishida, and named after creator Satoshi Tajiri. The character was designed to represent how Tajiri was as a child, obsessed with catching bugs."
"Ash's main goal is to become a "Pokémon Master," and as a result often attempts to defeat the Pokémon League- a competition of the strongest Trainers in a given region- in whatever region he is in." Use − instead of -
Reception doesn't seem to have any issues, but I'll probably run another quick skim before passing anyways.
Source review
Please use better sources if possible. In my opinion, they are acceptable enough for this subject (especially considering VG/S and the animanga sources page), but please keep in mind that if you plan on taking this article any further, or plan on maintaining it, unvetted/questionable sources such as Comicbook or Cinemablend should be swapped out if possible.
Anywho, I spotchecked 10, 22, 25, and 29. They seem to verify the contents they are cited to.
Comments
I'll take another look after the above comments are addressed, but for now I'll put this on hold. λNegativeMP1 16:24, 1 March 2024 (UTC)reply

NegativeMP1 I've made the requested prose changes. I also ended up just removing the section cited with Comicbook and Cinemablend since it was pretty weak and trivial overall, and wasn't really too tied into the character's overall notability.

Loosely based on Red
@
NegativeMP1, @
Pokelego999 do you have some sources about the statement "loosely based on Red"? Because there are no sources about this and this aspect of the character is only discussed in the lead section
Redjedi23 (

Good catch, didn't notice that wasn't verified in the lead. Pokelego can you remove that line please? λNegativeMP1 15:04, 2 March 2024 (UTC)reply

Pokelego999 I noticed another issue. In the lead section, it is stated that Ash appeared in several manga series, with a wikilink to
Pokémon Pocket Monsters. The problem is that it is not the only manga in which Ash appeared so I would remove this wikilink. Also, the manga Pokémon Pocket Monsters that we wikilinked in the lead section has zero mentions in the body of the article, even in the "In the video games and manga" section.
I just removed the wikilink from the lead section, but I feel that this aspect must be discussed in the article, especially because it is a GA, what do you think?
Redjedi23 (
talk) 17:02, 3 March 2024 (UTC) Edit: Nevermind, I just noticed that Pokémon Pocket Monsters doesn't even see Ash Ketchum as the main character, so the situation should be fine just right now.reply
Not even sure why that was there, honestly, given the above reasons, but again, it was something I missed during my edits. Thank you for catching some of the smaller things that I've missed, it's greatly appreciated.

... that Pokémon series protagonist Ash Ketchum has been highlighted as a major part of what has made the
Pokémon anime series so successful? Source:
https://www.gamesradar.com/pokemon-is-retiring-ash-and-pikachu-and-im-a-little-heartbroken/"That enduring fondness likely wouldn't exist without Ash and Pikachu. Article passes criteria. New enough (Promoted to GA within 7 days of nom), long enough. Since article passed GA review, pretty easily clears the DYK criteria for being well-sourced, as well as presentable. Earwig flags two sources with as mildly high "possible violations" but they're direct quotes. Maybe(?) could use some tweaking/paraphrasing to improve article, but for the purposes of appearing on the DYK section, that shouldn't impede it from inclusion tbh. Hooks are sourced properly. QPQ is moot because seems to be nominator's first time nominating. I def prefer ALT1 to ALT0, but they both have interesting angles.

Oops, made a mistake in here. Accidentally put the original creator as the one who improved it to GA status when I was the one who did that. Not a big deal but thought I'd make note of it.

Voice actors section
The "Voice actors" section doesn't have the necessary sources. It is written in the section that the first name of Ash in the series was "Casey", but it isn't stated in the source at the end of the paragraph. Also, there aren't any sources about the original voice actors (Rica Matsumoto and Hana Takeda). I feel like this section should be improved, maybe including more details about the original voice actor in order to give a more
WP:GLOBAL view of the subject.

I've just added a few sources on Matsumoto, though I couldn't find as much dev info as Natochenney or Taylor. There may be some stuff I'm missing in Japanese sources, so I'll likely look into that, but for now Matsumoto now has some citations referencing her tenure, and likely more can be added worst comes to worst. Takeda I ended up cutting due to the fact I couldn't find sources discussing her performance at all. I'll probably look deeper into that as well but for now the issues you've brought up have been addressed. If you happen to have any sources handy on those areas I mentioned, I'd greatly appreciate them as well.

I also found this source that talks about Hana Takeda:
[4], but it is only a list of voice actors of the episode
