In reply to Nardog's edit summary: the point is that many people especially at the time wrongly assumed that dictionaries were supposed to be purely prescriptive, which is why they were "appalled" that W3 entered "ain't" at all, for example, let alone labeling register. The notion here about "correct or incorrect" was poorly phrased.
