Luftwaffe . Most accounts say over 5,000 lives were lost while there were eight survivors. Recent Russian research say there were between 2,600 and 4,100 people aboard (crew, wounded, medical personnel and civilians evacuated from Yalta) and that lifeboats were launched and may have reached the shore or other Soviet ships.
