There used to be a story of the Presidentsfather, who was a man of rare strength and lov-ableness of character, telling how one day, goingto a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, hefound a little kitten some thoughtless boys hadworried, and, carefully wrapping it in his hand-kerchief, put it in his pocket and carried it withhim to the meeting and back to his home, whereit was safe. Not long ago, too, Gen. Horace Porter told ofhow Abraham Lincoln once found three mother-less kittens in a tent in General Grants camp andforthwith took them under his coat, and, in themidst of the crushing cares of that anxious time,saw to it that they were cared for. These littledeeds of kindness tell of the tenderness towardthe weak and helpless that goes ever with thestrength of a great and simple soul. One does not think any the less of the martyredPresident for finding him protecting a family ofhomeless kittens; but, rather, it gives him anadded claim upon our affection and esteem.
