Entitled "A wonderful ceiling", this plate is credited copyright 1882 by C. H. James. The rest of the caption reads: "An underground cavern (Luray in the United States) called the Ballroom, the room of which has been fashioned by the continual drip of water charged with carbon dioxide and carrying chalk in solution." This plate is found within The Romance of Modern Chemistry, which is a layman's introduction to topics in chemistry.
