English: This sketch of the Washington Street facade of "Graham & Shaffer Livery, Feed and Sale Stable" was made shortly before fire razed the structure. This image, name, and business description appear in an advertisement which includes the statements "Hack Calls for Student Parties Promptly Attended To" and "Hearse and Carriages for Funerals a Specialty." The livery also advertised itself as being the "Big Stables Opposite City Hall." The sketch likely enhances the appearance of the actual structure as was common practice during that era. The ad carries Shaffer as its spelling; see discussion below.) |

| Source | Directory of Iowa City, Iowa, May 1904. A listing for W.E.C. Foster (full name: William Ellery Channing Foster, doubtlessly after the 18th century poet of like name) associates him with Foster & Lindsley Coal, but not with the livery as other sources do. A listing for F.D. Lindsley shows that same coal company name. At an R.B. Graham listing, it shows the livery name as "Foster, Graham & Schaffer" with "c" in the latter name. The directory carries several Shaffer family listings, but none is associated with the livery. An E.C. Schaffer listing associates this listee with Foster Graham & Co. Thus, between the one ad and two family listings, a spelling certainty is not available from this single old source, but two-to-one favor Schaffer. This Shaffer or Schaffer family name is spelled differently than the University of Iowa president whose name is carried by Schaeffer Hall on Pentacrest. |
