New Zealand wine Geographical Indication maps

Hi there, before I attempt to further improve (or possibly rewrite from scratch) the rather dated, uneven and now somewhat inaccurate New Zealand wine article, I would like to include maps of the now legally protected regions, as defined in legislation. However, I'm afraid I am a total noob and have never attempted to make a map before, but I'm keen to learn and fairly handy at Inkscape. I'm assuming that I would need to make an SVG. I'm trying to get to the bottom of how I might start - do people vector-trace from somewhere? Am I allowed to flog shapes from OpenStreetMap? I've had a read of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Maps but I'm unenlightened about where to start, and I'm suspicious some of it might be out of date. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-) Jon ( talk) 07:26, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Well, shucks. I've done a first attempt at a map, at
which probably needs some work. Colours mainly, I suspect; I am somewhat colourblind after all. Any feedback would be great, I'm flying blind here :-) Jon ( talk) 13:18, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
Also, it seems that somehow I missed the (now fairly obvious!) page Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Conventions. Jon ( talk) 23:54, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Pushpin in the wrong place

Käsivarsi Wilderness Area seem to have the correct coordinates, but the pushpin on the map in the info box gets placed too far north it seems. It ends up in Norway. - Soulkeeper ( talk) 15:33, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

It looks like another case of relief maps being added with the wrong coordinates. I've disabled the relief map option of Template:Location map Finland for now, which fixes the problem on Käsivarsi Wilderness Area. –  Joe ( talk) 16:35, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Automatic gradient (choropleth) maps from 'list of countries by' data tables

Is there a way of automatically generating choropleth world maps from data tables within Wikipedia? A search reveals Wikipedia has 2,195 'list of countries' pages. If there isn't a template to do this already, it'd be great for someone abler than me to create one… — WisdomTooth3 ( talk) 10:58, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

A map with a mistake

This map has a misspelling of "operation".

File:Map Staten Island Railway en.png‎ has an error in it, as brought up on the talk page. The text says "in opeation" rather than "in operation". Also, there is a new Arthur Kill (Staten Island Railway station) between Nassau and Atlantic, on the bottom left corner of the page. I would appreciate it if this can be fixed. epicgenius ( talk) 14:52, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Mapframe on English Wikipedia

Hey all, I wanted to share the news that the team responsible for Wikimedia Maps (mapframe) are ready to enable the feature on English Wikipedia. Probably sometime in April. You can read more on WP:VPT. CKoerner (WMF) ( talk) 17:01, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Re-Mapping the Freedom Rides in color & public domain

If there were ever a "campaign map" that cried out to be made for the public domain, it'd be a map of the Freedom Rides. Can you help me make one? Or can you make the map that needs to be made? Am I in the right place? I've never made a Wiki map, or even suggested one. There currently exist rights-protected versions (often in black-and-white) to work from, such as

To support the place-and-date data that would go into a map, Wikipedia's List of Freedom Rides has all the standard information a mapmaker would need, I am upgrading the place links in this table to point to specific geo locations, such as Greyhound Bus Station (Montgomery, Alabama). Also note that the rides pre-date much of the Interstate Highway System, and mostly traversed the older US-Routes. KevinCuddeback ( talk) 14:23, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Hubei map glaring error

Hubei (Map 1)
Suizhou (Map 2)

Hello! I have no clue how to edit or create a map, but I feel something needs to be brought up:

Here's the Hubei administrative divisions map on the Hubei page (Map 1):

Here's the administrative divisions map of Suizhou (Map 2):

Area 8 on the Hubei map (Map 1) is Suizhou. If you look closely, you'll see that although Zengdu District (the pink area in Map 2) is definitely big enough that it could be included on the Hubei map, it was apparently omitted. I think it should be added.

Here's a map of Suizhou's Zengdu District: http://www.xzqh.org/html/show/hb/15443.html

Here's a map of Suizhou: http://www.xzqh.org/html/show/hb/27550.html

1) Who can help me fix this?

2) If no one can help me fix it, how should I go about learning how to fix it myself?

(I have already made a comment at Talk:Hubei, User talk:Neo-Jay and at User talk:Maggern87.)

Thanks! Geographyinitiative ( talk) 05:21, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

I tried to upload a changed map, failed twice. You can see my failed uploads at [1]. Geographyinitiative ( talk) 10:47, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Well apparently it took a while for the new image to register in the system. Now you can see it. I just added a line by hand in ms paint; poor quality compared to the master work that Maggern87 orginally created. Anyway, at least now you can see Zengdu District. Geographyinitiative ( talk) 11:23, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
The boundary between Zengdu District and Sui County of Suizhou was established in late 2009; this was about the same time that the wikipedia map was made. Apparently the (excellent) map Magger made was already outdated before it was posted! [1] Geographyinitiative ( talk) 13:44, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Mapframe maps now work on English Wikipedia

A mapframe map shows the location of Wikimania 2018, in Cape Town, South Africa

English Wikipedians can now use the mapframe function to embed maps right on a page. The map at right (which shows the location of this year’s Wikimania conference) demonstrates the functionality.  Mapframe was requested by the English community via RfC last year and the request was reconfirmed this spring. If you’re new to mapframe, this Kartographer help page shows how to use it.

Expect more significant new features in the coming weeks, with the implementation of  the long-awaited map internationalization features. After internationalization, maps will display in the content language of the wiki they’re published on.  Until then, they will continue to display in the language of the territory mapped. (You can experiment with internationalized maps on testwiki now—here’s a page of examples.)

These features are brought to you as part of the Map Improvements 2018 project. Please try mapframe out on English Wikipedia and let us know what you think on the project talk page. We’re listening. — JMatazzoni (WMF) ( talk) 02:29, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Map requests

Hello. Could someone please add a map to the infobox in the Lynching of Ephraim Grizzard? Also possibly the infoboxes of the Lynching of David Jones and the Lynching of Samuel Smith (with two dots). Please ping me when you reply. Thank you. Zigzig20s ( talk) 22:48, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Modified version of a historical map

Wondering if anyone would like to take the time to produce a new version of this [2] historical map of the Pearl River Delta in China. I'm looking to create a visual aid for the First Opium War article. I only need the outlines of the river and islands, and do not need (I will add these later using a text source I have) any names, labels, or the cutaway of Canton in the map's top right hand corner. The outlines should probably be darker than they are now. Also, if anyone has questions, knows of an alternative map (preferably a black and white outline of the Pearl River), or has a suggestion as to how I can produce a map myself, please ping me.-- SamHolt6 ( talk) 20:32, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{ Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:59, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Map request

I have added a location map for community development blocks in Birbhum district. I had to use a West Bengal state map as district maps for interactive or any other purpose is not readily available. I have placed the map on Murarai I page under the sub-head Geography. The map is too big. Can I get help of a smaller district map for Birbhum district? Can I get district maps of other districts of West Bengal, later on? Cheers. - Chandan Guha ( talk) 12:00, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Map modification request

Three districts of West Bengal have been bifurcated over the past few years. The interactive maps normally used in the Infoboxes on various town and other pages does not show the new districts, as for example the map on the Bardhaman page. Another type of map used in the Infoboxes on the district pages of West Bengal has been updated. Please see - Purba Bardhaman district, Paschim Medinipur district and Jalpaiguri district, for the updated maps. Please modify the standard maps in use. Cheers. - Chandan Guha ( talk) 12:14, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

@ Chandan Guha: Please use the map workshop for requests. –  Joe ( talk) 13:32, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. Action taken, as advised. - Chandan Guha ( talk) 15:16, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

WikiConference North America talk about disputes in OpenStreetMap

In case anyone here is interested, I've proposed a talk at this year's WikiConference North America about OpenStreetMap's policies and practices around content disputes and countervandalism. It seems like a timely topic, considering recent incidents of highly visible map vandalism in English Wikipedia articles. –  Minh Nguyễn  💬 06:43, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Localize maps where small objects are featured

The map of the whole state with a little dot doesn't seem as useful as a map of the local metropolitan area which then has the dot. See for example Bridge to Nowhere (San Gabriel Mountains). Reposted from Template talk:Infobox bridge - Inowen ( nlfte) 04:17, 13 October 2018 (UTC) Given recent new capabilities as far as maps, this might be something to code-ify. But even without, its not difficult to honor the idea of global places having identity, meaning there are names for each place, as well as directives which when combined are easy to use for narrow things down. What's required then is lots of metro maps where there is sufficient detail to give perspective. - Inowen ( nlfte) 04:22, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Featured quality source review RFC

Editors in this WikiProject may be interested in the featured quality source review RFC that has been ongoing. It would change the featured article candidate process (FAC) so that source reviews would need to occur prior to any other reviews for FAC. Map data as opposed to map pictures

Hello all, what is the current state-of-the-art concerning integration of map data via Commons and Wikidata (as opposed to static pictures of converted map data)? I see mw:Help:Map Data, and I note that T57549 on Phabricator "Add a new datatype for geoshapes" was closed in May 2017. esbranson ( talk) 16:50, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Would Location_map/data/Antarctic_Peninsula need x and y fields?

I am just wondering if Module:Location_map/data/Antarctic_Peninsula wouldn't be big enough to require x and y fields like Module:Location_map/data/Antarctica just to be more precise. I couldn't find any conclusive information on this, and i don't know how big a map needs to be in order to need one. If yes, does anyone know who can make those calculations? I am porting this template to the Portuguese branch of the wiki and would like to be as correct as possible. YuriNikolai ( talk) 02:01, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Community Wishlist

Please see m:Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Maps/Maps Improvements: Vector Structure, Disputed Borders, Cleaner Style. The wishlist uses approval voting (vote to support any/all wishes that you like), so "oppose votes" are pointless, but useful information, examples, or explanations of problems would be very much appreciated.

This is one of multiple "wishes" for improvements to how maps are handled on Wikipedia. (Most of the others can be found at m:Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Maps, although m:Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Multimedia and Commons/Easy, low-maintenance possibility to include color coded maps seems to be in a separate group.) Bali location map

The old image made by Sadalmelik
Proposed image by RXerself, 2018
The old image and proposed image.

I want to change the image used in Module:Location map/data/Indonesia Bali from the old one to the one I just made ( File:Bali topography plain.png). But I don't know, I want to ask the community whether mine is fine. RXerself ( talk) 15:43, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

What exactly do you intend to improve on the old one? The sea detail is nice and the colour scheme is easier on the eyes, but i feel like it's harder to visualize some terrain height differences in the new image. YuriNikolai ( talk) 02:02, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
I think your new one is a definitely improvement for purposes of a location map, if you're going to be adding points on top of it via a template the more muted colors should help legibility. Kmusser ( talk) 04:46, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
