What does he do

What does this guy do out of curiosity? I saw one of his vandals had made a constructive edit http://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Celanese&diff=90101914&oldid=86429253 Timan123 05:16, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

The long term abuse page says that he frequently violates WP:MOS, adds false information, re-creates deleted articles, and performs cut-and-paste moves. When he first started to edit pages, he edited under an IP address. Pants (T) 19:19, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

I believe that this user is banned since every one of his accounts gets blocked by an admin. MascotGuy has been given chances to edit articles without an admin blocking him. Pants (T) 19:20, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

MascotGuy finally edits a talk page???

Has our favorite sockpuppet show, MascotGuy finally edited a user talk page? [1] (You have been temporarily blocked You have been temporarily busted) Here he's editing from an IP address, for either he forgot to create a new account or he ran out of names to call himself. What the heck could this mean? If anything, I suppose this confirms that he does read the messages sent to him after all. Now all we need is for him to improve on his idea of communicating to other editors. Tuxide 00:25, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

  • I don't think that's MascotGuy; that looks like the Warner Independent Pictures/Columbia Pictures/studio merger vandal. — tregoweth ( talk) 03:24, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Frankly, I don't think WP:DENY works, but this is going a little overboard, don't you think? -- haha169 ( talk) 05:38, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

And, he's back...

This time as Mr. Trix ( talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), separating information from one of his favourite targets, Atomic Betty, and creating new articles for individual characters that basically say the same thing as their entry in the main article. MascotGuy edits Wikinews now?

Found another one that I believe to be him, Bam-Bam the Maid ( talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). What's interesting is his edits [2] to Wal-Mart coincide with the creation of this article on Wikinews. On Wikinews he was using an ip address 75.18.112.197 ( talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) which is registered in San Diego. Tuxide 06:18, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

The Wikinews article was just deleted, and as per its log page, it looks like that was not the first time [3]. Tuxide 06:27, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Freaky Friday Guy

Freaky Friday Guy ( talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) seems to fit the pattern of Mascot Guy socks because this user name is a phrase and it ends with "guy." The user never marks his edits minor, never provides edit summaries and doesn't use the edit link. Squirepants101 17:57, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Now this sockpuppet really needs to be blocked. He's now created a hoax about a TV show based on The Ant Bully. Squirepants101 20:37, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

  • A lot of those IPs look like MascotGuy. I'll add them to the list here. — tregoweth ( talk) 22:17, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Has he left Wikipedia?

No one seems to have reported any accounts on the page for about nine days now, so I'd like to ask this question: Has MascotGuy left Wikipedia for good or is it the fact that he has received some form of punishment? I've checked some of this target articles (especially Wal-Mart) to see if he's edited them and it turns out that he hasn't. Squirepants101 22:08, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

  • I'd been wondering that too. Hopefully he isn't just editing articles that aren't on our watchlists... — tregoweth ( talk) 22:23, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Even MascotGuy needs a wikibreak now and then. Give him some time. He'll be back in some other bafflingly named incarnation; keep your eyes peeled for Western Omelet Rolltop Woo-hoo Desk of the Forest Guy.-- The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 22:28, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
If that name was half as long, I would totally accept it as a MG username. Are you sure you're not MascotGuy? :)— tregoweth ( talk) 02:51, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

MascotGuy invades Commons?

I know this was back in October, but I just noticed this on Commons, a single purpose account that uploaded a bunch of images of Kmart and Wal-Mart. This is obviously our MascotGuy. Notice the user name. Doing a google search for the phrase (name redacted) returns a list of urls to freakish cartoon desktop theme downloads, all linked to the email address (email redacted)...which remarkably is also a blocked MascotGuy ( sockpuppet account) on the English Wikipedia. Regards, Tuxide 06:27, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Just another note that this (name redacted) also seems to be quite active on the topix.net forums, apart from Wikipedia [4]. Tuxide 06:18, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
And his posts make no damned sense. — tregoweth ( talk) 17:08, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
I have a few things to say about this. One, it's obvious that this (name redacted) user is MascotGuy. Just look at his posts and compare them to what MascotGuy edits. Two, if (name redacted)/MascotGuy can communicate with other people on Topix.net, why can't he do it here? Squirepants101 01:24, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
I believe his activity on topix.net is posting articles on discount retailers and supermarket chains, whether they are true or not. And his posts make no damned sense. Tuxide 01:29, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Example [5] Tuxide 01:34, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
If you read his Topix.net posts, he doesn't interact with anyone else; he just posts his, um, "news stories." I really wish we could figure out a way to get a hold of whoever is responsible for him, and suggest they keep an eye on his Internet use. — tregoweth ( talk) 02:46, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
It's obvious that his email address is (email redacted) (where the first d stands for derek)...maybe his mother uses a similar one but with a different starting letter? Just a thought, Tuxide 03:10, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
It's (email dredacted), this is most likely his mom's email address and the one that User:Lucky 6.9 emailed. Note the edit history of the account the account, where the account user posts on his or her own talk page and says "MascotGuy has been behaving" [6] in the third person. Tuxide 03:19, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
I think that's him copying text from various sources trying to fake an unblock notice, because he thought that would get him unblocked. — tregoweth ( talk) 12:40, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Maybe his mom was trying to show him how to request an unblock (or least communicate to others)? User:Lucky 6.9 claims that this is indeed a valid email address. Also [7]. In addition, there is also a (redacted) and a (redacted) account on the Wake-Up Wal-Mart forums [8] [9], both registered on the same day (and never posted); however they state their email addresses as being from Yahoo.com. Tuxide 21:00, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I found some new posts made by Derek. Two of them were made last month, while one was made in April. Here they are: [10], [11], and [12]. In the last link, Derek appears to be posting from Orlando, Florida. Pants (T) 03:29, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

  • So he's making up news stories now? Great... — tregoweth ( talk) 06:22, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Regex

I am considering making a list of regex patterns that can match MascotGuy sock candidates, for those of you who use WP:VF to detect new MascotGuy accounts like I do. If this interests anyone (or if anyone else uses WP:VF for this), please reply. Regards, Tuxide 04:14, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Autism

The section saying that because the editor edits articles for autism centers and therefore may not appreciate the gravity of his edits is both baseless and insulting. Insulting to both people with autism and the editor. I recommend it be removed immediately. - Ocatecir 05:53, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

It is not baseless. I remember someone saying that he has contacted MascotGuy's mother through email, and confirmed that he indeed has autism. It could probably be reworded to reflect this confirmation. I also remember an ip address that has requested an unblock with the message "MascotGuy is behaving". Regards, Tuxide 06:02, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah, here is the from this very talk page. Regards, Tuxide 06:04, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
I think "MascotGuy is behaving" is something I said when (optimistically) unblocking an account. In any event, I'm rewriting the description, since evidence is mostly circumstantial. — tregoweth ( talk) 07:17, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
(finally found the account he is looking for) Not true, as per this account. Tuxide 03:21, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps he does appreciate the gravity of his edits.(I don't know him.) I agree with Ocatecir, except it being removed. I'm unsure about that and have no consensus on it. 99.230.152.143 21:51, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Did he exist?

According to his logs, this user doesn't seem to exist. Could someone explain this? -- AAA! ( AAAA) 09:05, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

The username is definitely registered - however (see User:MascotGuy) it wasnt the vandal that created it. I often wondered this myself, especially as the LTA page says he "never" uses CamelCase in his usernames (its ironic our nickname for him is in CamelCase then) However Im not 100% sure of the origin Glen 09:15, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure I came up with the name; at the time he was editing a lot of mascot-related articles, and he hadn't started using "Guy" in his name yet. I had to call him something. :) — tregoweth ( talk) 18:39, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Page format changes?

Glen and Tuxide have suggested that this page's format be changed, as it's becoming a bit of a trophy list for MascotGuy. I hate to delete information, but I'm not sure how useful year-old usernames are. Suggestions? — tregoweth ( talk) 18:39, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

In my opinion the list of usernames have been useful for recognizing patterns in his naming. Although it is not complete (the category page is more complete than WP:LTA/MG), the dates that he registered might also be relevant (like the day he started using "___ Guy" accounts). Tuxide 19:01, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Let us taunt it by adding Image:Sock puppetting2.png to its baduser infobox. It may become so crossed that it'll make a mistake. Tuxide 19:06, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't understand your comment. 99.230.152.143 ( talk) 01:25, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Is this user one of MascotGuy's sockpuppets? The user was already blocked indefinitely because of the username. Squirepants101 00:01, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Jewish Guy never made any edits, MG style or otherwise, so it remains a mystery. Personally, I see MascotGuy more as Scots-Irish Protestant, but that's idle speculation.-- The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 05:04, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

More inactivity

MascotGuy hasn't edited since the 19th of February. It is now March. What the hell happened to him? Tuxide 01:39, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

I asked a similar question on January 30th and about a day later, he came running back creating more accounts. Squirepants101 03:59, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
So what, does he like take ten-day long breaks and then return on the beginning of the following month? Tuxide 04:52, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't get it

I've looked at some of the sock's contributions, and some of the edits seemed legitimate, such as this, this, and this; but they were still reverted. How come? -- AAA! ( AAAA) 07:57, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Added a lot of sockpuppets onto this page

I've recently added 17 MascotGuy sockpuppets onto the page. All of them have been blocked by Mike Rosoft. Some of the accounts were created by Variety Speak Guy before he was blocked. What I don't get is, why would Variety Speak Guy/MascotGuy create these socks when he wasn't going to be blocked? Squirepants101 19:03, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps he's using a proxy server, like most universities use. Even though he's logged in, he may still get an older version of a web page asking him to register. Tuxide 22:03, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
[13] Damn. I'm surprised he hasn't blocked Colorvision ( talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). Tuxide 22:11, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Isn't there just a way on MediaWiki to disable user creation on registered usernames, as there is for ip addresses—but without giving a full block? If MascotGuy doesn't ever sign off of his accounts then this will help keep him from registering new ones when he's logged in. Tuxide 08:28, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
When I block him, I always check "Prevent account creation" and "Block this user's last IP address, and any subsequent addresses he/she attempts to edit from. If he starts again from a different IP address and creates a new account, then the old block won't have any effect (if I'm understanding things correctly). — tregoweth ( talk) 16:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
My question is if there's a way to let him edit and not create new accounts when he's signed in. Sorry for the wordage. Regards, Tuxide 21:35, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
I think that's just a MediaWiki bug feature. — tregoweth ( talk) 23:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

...so, does this mean we're officially back to perpetual MascotGuy blocking again? Tuxide 05:12, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. Some of his previous edits have been kind of dubious, and he still has the habit of uploading images from random websites (I've deleted Atomic Betty wallpaper images so many times...) — tregoweth ( talk) 05:33, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
I think this is the only user with too much accounts. What do you think?  PNiddy   Go!  0 01:01, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't think so,but i don't know. 99.230.152.143 22:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I got an idea!

You administrators can block his IP address for 1 year! So we can forget about him!  PNiddy   Go!  0 01:40, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Back when he edited without accounts, it was from a large number of IPs, probably dynamic. — tregoweth ( talk) 02:06, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Even if you did try to block all those IPs, he might try to change it, and we would just have more IPs to block. Pants (T) 03:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

I got an idea!

You know at the UAA they have those bots that report usernames? Maybe we could program the bot to look for words he frequently uses in his names. Cheers, JetLover (talk) 21:31, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Question/suggestion

This page is probably only encouraging him to carry on, seeing all the attention he's getting. Taking this into account, isn't it about time somebody e-mailed his mother again and politely informed her of both the sheer magnitude of his vandalism to this encyclopedia, and of the wasted time of editors and admins clearing up after his endless accounts? Who knows, she may do something about it! Failing that, how helpful are ISPs on these matters? I'm guessing very un. Miremare 20:01, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree that someone needs to e-mail the mother again. Apparently, he doesn't hide sockpuppetry well (editing this page to be helpful, tagging his own sockpuppets, etc.). Blocking his sockpuppets doe not help much in the long run. After all, he's been editing and vandalising Wikipedia for almost three years (he's created over 700 sockpuppets so far). Pants (T) 22:54, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Three MascotGuy IPs blocked

Mackensen blocked three confirmed MascotGuy IPs per checkuser. That ought to stop him temporarily from making sockpuppets. Pants (T) 02:26, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

For reference, they are User:71.159.228.197, User:76.88.107.228, and User:68.111.148.190 (this one was blocked once for a month last December, now it's six months). Pants (T) 02:40, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Shouldn't something be posted on those talk pages, in case someone else on MascotGuy's ISP draws those IPs? — tregoweth ( talk) 03:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Blocking the IPs didn't work well because he's still making sockpuppets, including one called MascotGuy Rules. Pants (T) 21:50, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Mom "beats" Derek (MascotGuy) frequently

I did a Google search, and I found this. Here is what he said: Hi I'm (name redacted) and I am lying. I'm am also know as MascotGuy on Wikipedia. My mom frequently beats me that's wye I do what I do. Pants (T) 02:59, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm sure that is his real name, but we shouldn't include it here; I don't think that needs to be disclosed. I'm sure the first poster in that link was Mascot Guy, and the second link was some wiseass (aware of MG's real name) having a bit of fun at the troubled lad's expense-- The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 23:50, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
I removed it, realizing that it really isn't that useful. The second poster could be MascotGuy. Idaho is kind of close to California, but not quite. Pants (T) 23:59, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Not everybody believed it on that forum. 99.230.152.143 ( talk) 01:36, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Email

Well, the address that User:Lucky6.9 used to contact Derek's mother (email redacted) is no longer valid. I was all set to send that email I mentioned above, but I guess we'll have to wait until something else comes up. If it ever really was her address, that is; according to Lucky6.9's post she seemed willing to prevent him doing it, but obviously never did. Anyone got any ideas? Miremare 13:36, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

More Hard-blocks

At WP:RFCU/IP, Voice of all nabbed some of the IP's, so maybe he'll have to slow down a bit for now. Cheers, JetLover (talk) 02:04, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Um....

Um......how old is he?? I think he doesn't know what a "sockpuppet" is. I should make him read the this page and this page so he'll understand what WP is. --  PNiddy   Go!  0 03:09, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Has he stopped?

Since the Checkuser request it appears he has slowed down quite a lot. Did it help? Cheers, JetLover (talk) 04:20, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Talking to him

If he is autistic (which seems almost certain), then that's the reason. — tregoweth ( talk) 23:59, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm starting to think he's creating multiple accounts for attention -- notice how he goes back to tag long-blocked accounts with {{blockedsockpuppet|MascotGuy}}. I'm half-tempted to make all of his user pages protected redirects to WP:LTA/MG; any thoughts? — tregoweth ( talk) 16:48, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Do whatever it takes to stall him. Amazingly enough, September marks the third anniversary of MascotGuy's editing. Pants (T) 21:26, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
And he's created 738 accounts, by my count. Maybe I'll get someone with a bot to make the changes I suggested above. — tregoweth ( talk) 01:59, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

I can't remember from when I registered, but doesn't Wikipedia require verification of email address to create an account? And if not, why not? That would stop him in his tracks, as email addresses of banned users could themselves be blacklisted to prevent new accounts being made with them. Or am I missing something blindingly obvious here?! There must be a good reason this isn't done, I suppose. Miremare 22:49, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Email addresses are only required to receive email from other users, and for resetting passwords. (Also, it would be trivial to use a free email service to create another account.) I think the bigger question is why people who are already logged in are allowed to create additional accounts. — tregoweth ( talk) 01:52, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
He could use free email providers, but it would make things a lot more difficult for him having to register a new email address for each account too, and would slow him down if nothing else. But that's a good point you've raised, why are logged in users allowed to create further accounts? Miremare 22:20, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Check this out, yo

Here's an ANI discussion about a colorful character known as AnnieTigerChucky. Has Mascot Guy finally graduated to CamelCase and edit summaries (sort of), or have I made an embarrassing misjudgement?-- The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 22:39, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

This is definitely not him, although I have seen unresponsive people who edit just like MascotGuy that are also not him. There was one I saw who was even named "____ ____ 5000" that wasn't our friend. Regards, Tuxide 02:02, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Are you sure? This is a crazy coincidence then! Someone who makes crazy, largely unconstructive edits to articles about Nickelodeon series and autism and then doesn't communicate with other users?? If this turns out not to be him, I suppose the CamelCase should have been a dead giveaway.-- The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 02:11, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
I'd have to agree with TFMWNCB. Cheers, Je t Lover ( Report a mistake) 02:15, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
If this were really MascotGuy, the user would have created several accounts by now. Just look at this. Tregoweth thought this one wasn't doing anything bad, so it wasn't blocked until March 19. Pants (T) 02:22, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Note: AnnieTigerChucky's account was created on May 12, 2007. Pants (T) 02:24, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
But MascotGuy doesn't always do that. Cheers, Je t Lover ( Report a mistake) 02:31, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
I guess you have a point there. MascotGuy doesn't always redirect pages either. Do any of you think there should be a checkuser done on this user? Pants (T) 02:34, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
It'd be pretty pointless because he constantly chnages his IP's. Cheers, Je t Lover ( Report a mistake) 02:36, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Unless it is to confirm the region of the United States he is from. MascotGuy uses Bay area, California IP addresses. There would be a stronger argument that this is him if the location was the same. I don't know if checkuser can be done for this though... Tuxide 03:29, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Sorry if this has already been covered here but is it possible to softblock his IP range(s) with account creation disabled or does he use open proxies or something? Sarah 03:41, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
It's a bit late, but, yeah, based on the CamelCase name, the edit summaries, editing individual sections instead of the whole article, and editing at roughly the same time as more obvious MG socks, AnnieTigerChucky isn't MascotGuy. Also, if I recall correctly, I left Variety Speak Guy unblocked in the hope of encouraging him to make a positive contribution; I've since realized that communicating with MG is unlikely. Also, speaking of autistic users, does anyone else seem to run into them a lot, or do I just frequent topics that people with autism or Asperger's gravitate towards? — tregoweth ( talk) 03:04, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
User:Variety Speak Guy appears to have used edit summaries (coherent ones too), and even provided sources for his two image uploads. That seems a little out of character... Miremare 17:03, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
But the similarities are impossible to ignore. A someone with the name ___Guy, editing articles scantily using edit summaries, not communicating with others, and even editing autism is a pretty wild coincidence. Cheers, Je t Lover ( Report a mistake) 21:10, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh no, I wasn't saying it might not be him, I was just pointing out two unusual edits. Miremare 21:35, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Oddly enough, he usually does provide the source URL for images he uploads. — tregoweth ( talk) 21:38, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
